“IT’S A BIT PREMATURE”: AFL GREATS GIVE CONTRADICTING OPINIONS ON TARANTO/HOPPER DEALS

Andrew Slevison
SEN
18 April 2023

Has Richmond sold the farm for Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper?

That is the conversation that was sparked on SEN’s Sportsday on Monday night between Kane Cornes and Luke Hodge.

The Tigers gave up a future first-round draft selection (currently pick 4), as well as picks 12, 19 and 31 to GWS for the midfield pair who both signed on seven-year deals.

Early this season you could look at it from a point of view that is hasn’t quite worked given the Tigers own a 1-3-1 win-loss-draw record and sit 15th on the ladder.

However, on the flip side, Taranto leads the club in disposals, contested possessions, tackles and clearances, is second for score involvements and third for inside 50s. (But does have the most clangers).

Hopper, meanwhile, has been solid, averaging over 24 disposals, nine contested possessions, over five inside 50s, four tackles and more than three clearances per game.

Due to the fact that Richmond gave up four significant picks for the duo, Cornes is of the belief that the overall deal is “horrific” for the club.

“This deal gets worse and worse by the week, it really does,” Cornes said.

“You’ve got to factor in the 14 years between them and them not helping Richmond.

“It’s a watch. Clearly Richmond are fourth last at the moment and that pick is held by the Giants. Their ladder position might improve which makes the deal look a little bit better.

“I think it’s a horrific deal. I think it’s about as bad a trade as we’ve seen in a long time on current evidence.

“They’ve got seven years left!”

“Exactly right,” said Hodge.

“They’ve got to find their groove. They’ve got them for the future.

“They’re going to try and fit themselves into the team style now.”

Cornes and Hodge exchanged in a back and forth, offering contradicting views of the Taranto/Hopper deals.

Cornes:
“Taranto can’t kick a drop punt.”

Hodge: “There’s been plenty of players who haven’t been able to kick who had long careers.”

Cornes: “I’m trying to get ahead of the curve here.

“It’s a horrific deal.”

Hodge is prepared to give the on-ball pair more time to prove themselves, speaking from personal experience when Hawthorn recruited Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell prior to the 2017 season.

It didn’t have an immediate impact as the Hawks missed finals that year, but they did bounce back to finish in the top four in 2018 with Mitchell and O’Meara key components of the recoil.

“I reckon you’ve jumped early on this one,” the Hawks great added.

“For one person I wouldn’t give up those picks, but for two I probably would.

“If you had the belief that these guys are going to take your midfield and charge on for the next seven years and bring you back up to premiership (contenders).

“Clearly they do (have that belief).

“Taranto has started off the season really well. Yes, his kicking has let him down. Hopper has been in and out a little bit, hasn’t been as good.

“But they’re five games in. I remember when Jaeger and Tommy Mitchell in, we missed finals the next year, but they bought them back up to the top four in 2018.

“So I wouldn’t be jumping five years into a seven-year contract.”

Cornes: “I just call it as I see it, I’m observing.”

Hodge: “It’s a bit premature.”

Cornes: ”I don’t think it is. It’s my observation from Round 5.”

The Tigers are currently in a precarious position heading into a crunch clash with Melbourne in Round 6.

But is it too early to write off the recruitment of both Taranto and Hopper?

Crystal ball 🔮
So if we had not drafted Taranto and Hopper and just gone with Ross and Sonsie I wonder how much worse would we now be?

Games into the 2 of them, a whole lot of $ in the bank and all our draft picks intact

Actual  :( :(
Needed to have another flag tilt which hasn’t
worked due to injury list
Both are working out ok
Draft picks pillaged
No money

So in hindsight if we were coming 1st atm we would all be patting ourselves on the back saying brilliant strategy.
Hasn’t worked that way so now we have to suck it up and develop what we have. Players have to be more disciplined.

We can’t get much worse than where we are now. As I said if they make you better then it’s a wise choice, and if they don’t then it was a waste. As of now they don’t. With a full list I still can’t see us improving from last year.

I would argue we may even be in a better spot if we did nothing. Time will tell. With a very strong draft coming up compared to the previous we should have chosen one of them, and hit up FA with the money saved.

With dusty contract expiring next year we would have some serious cash for even 2 FA as well as banking this years picks had we went with TT only. King from the suns would be perfect with our disastrous forward line.

Gws gave us the lube and we whipped our arse with it then bent over without a fight.

At least it was better than the Yarran deal

Has Cornes ever said anything good about Richmond?

He is a nobody with a big mouth, what I really don't understand is the TV stations and Papers giving him a outlet. There must be some that cant or don't want to see though his rubbish statements. I suppose when you look at the general Football reporting there are many like him  (maybe not quite as biased) that just run with rubbish or total falsehoods.  Sad state really.

After 2017 he said he was wrong about us.

Which was only when he was dead in the water and we had a flag.

Never come out and said anything positive unless he had nowhere else to go.

It's about ratings and sales.

Clickbait is what he is about and Ch9, SEN, the AFL website and the newspapers know it. They love because it gets them what they want

MET EXPECTATIONS - Taranto and Hopper

Andrew Slevison
SEN
19 April 2023

While the Tigers have largely underperformed to date, new midfield pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper have met expectations.

Taranto is averaging 30 disposals, more than seven tackles, over five clearances and four inside 50s per game.

While his disposal efficiency has been down, his effort and intent have been exactly what you’d expect from such a player.

His former Giants mate Hopper has also been solid.

He had his best game in yellow and black against Sydney last week and is now averaging 24 touches, over five inside 50s, four tackles and more than three clearances.

The seven-year duo have certainly met expectations. They just need the rest of the Richmond midfield to tack on.

BELOW EXPECTATIONS - Clearance game and discipline

The Tigers addressed their midfield issues in the off-season by recruiting Taranto and Hopper.

While both of the former Giants have been decent so far, sitting one and three at the club respectively for clearances, the Tigers continue to struggle in that area.

The recruitment of the pair hasn’t quite worked from a clearance viewpoint just yet. Richmond sits 14th in that stat category which isn’t good enough.

They need the likes of Dion Prestia, Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton to really come to the party now.

Additionally, Richmond’s discipline has also been an issue.

At times they are playing like a frustrated team, lashing out stupidly and giving away dumb free kicks.

That is a part of their game that must be cleaned up if their season is to turn.
