"I've got no doubt that with the remaining ten games, they're at least going to cause some problems." - Damian Barrett.

With Andrew McQualter getting Richmond firing again, can the Tigers make finals?

CAN IMPROVING TIGERS MAKE FINALS CHARGE UNDER MCQUALTER?

Richmond’s finals hopes are alive following their upset 70-85 win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium last night.

With wins in their last two games, Richmond holds a 5-1-7 record and just six points behind the eighth-placed Western Bulldogs.

As the Tigers look to have improved in recent weeks under interim coach Andrew McQualter, journalist Damian Barrett believes Richmond are a genuine finals threat.

He discussed the side’s form and McQualter taking over from Damien Hardwick with Tony Jones and Matthew Lloyd on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

Jones: “If you're a Richmond supporter watching at the moment, can they (play finals)?”

Barrett: “Yeah, they can, they’re just six points out (of the eight) as we just saw on the ladder. “I've got no doubt that with the remaining 10 games, they're at least going to cause some problems which they did last night for the Dockers. ”

Lloyd: “What do you say to Damien Hardwick walking out when he did, he felt that there was nothing really much to gain from the season.

“It may help Richmond on the field.”

Jones: “Was it more his (Hardwick’s) mindset (that caused him to depart)?”

Barrett: “I think it was.

“They lost that game to Essendon by a point and then lost the first game under Andrew McQualter by 10 points against Port Adelaide.

“Then they’ve won the past two, the first by six points against GWS and last night by 15 against Fremantle.

“They toughed out both of them, and they've got a draw which I think is favourable to them to at least keep this dream alive.”

The Tigers will hope to win their third-straight game when they take on St Kilda in the MCG on Saturday.

If he gets us to finals from where we are I would pretty much be happy to give him the job.

I think we're in for 3-5 years of pain so I'm not overly fussed if he doesn't become a premiership coach but he might well be a good option to see us through a tough period.

A 'Mini' revival is on at Richmond

Road wins can mark a turning point in a season, so what will back-to-back travel victories under a new coach do for the Tigers? Saturday night's 15-point win against Fremantle was Richmond's best this season and it showed us there is a pulse in 2023 under Andrew McQualter, who is 2-1 since taking over and is making a compelling early case to win the top job permanently. The Tigers are clearly playing for the coach they call 'Mini' and doing the tough, gritty things he demands. A sixth win for the season against St Kilda next Saturday night at the MCG and finals will be right back on the agenda. – Nathan Schmook

Richmond can still make the eight

While they looked dead and buried just a few weeks ago, Richmond have found something under Andrew McQualter to keep their finals hopes alive.

The big guns in Tim Taranto, Shai Bolton, Toby Nankervis, Jayden Short and Dustin Martin are all building in form and you can see the belief growing.

Even though they have a 5-1-7 record following their win over Fremantle on Saturday night, the Tigers are just six points out of the eight as the draw begins to open up for them.

In the current form that they’re in, Richmond are every chance of going 7-3 in their last 10 games which could be enough to sneak in and play in September.

The Tigers play all of West Coast, Hawthorn and North Melbourne on the run home and if they win all of those, they may only need to go 4-3 in their other fixtures with winnable games against St Kilda twice, Sydney at home and the Western Bulldogs to come.

It’d be an incredible effort from here, but the heart is still well and truly beating at Punt Road.
