Essendon has recorded a kicking efficiency of 73% tonight compared to Richmond's 62%. The Tigers have recorded a kicking efficiency of just 64% this season – the worst percentage of any side.

Richmond's intercept marking has been a key feature tonight, grabbing 24 of these mark types tonight compared to Essendon's 18. This is a season-best result for the Tigers, with Nick Vlastuin and Noah Balta combining for nine between them.

Essendon has gone coast-to-coast to score for the sixth time from their defensive 50 tonight. They have now outscored the Tigers by 17 points from defensive 50 launches.

Essendon has won 12 more contested possessions than the Tigers this [last] quarter - the first time tonight that they have led this stat late in a quarter. Essendon won 19 fewer contested possessions in the first three quarters.

A remarkable come-from-behind victory for the Bombers winning by one point - their fifth one-point victory against the Tigers and first since 2002. Essendon controlled possession, grabbing 154 marks for the match - the most marks taken by any team in a match this season.

Yet Anthony Tippanwutti who looks like he has eaten 3 small animals had 3 marks. All uncontested. How on earth can Tippa have outmarked all of our 3 forwards. That comparison speaks volumes.

Our system was thrashed. Our ball movement is not good enough. Our forwardline is dysfunctional and not creating enough goal chances. Our effort tonight and willingness to run to space was not good enough.

To be honest ive lost interest to a big degree. 2017 WAS THE LONG WAIT. 2019 AND 2020 was the bonus
and i there is no longer that need to see success having waited so long.Truth is the game itself has gone to the dogs and is hardly worth watching any more.
If honest id rather watch the inside version of net ball with the girls than the outside one with the !!!.

I'm feeling oddly meh about the whole thing.

B Gale, T Livingstone, and N Balme have a big job at season's end because I think Dimma is so loyal to his boys that he hast lost the ability to see the wood from the trees with this group.

Is it just me or does the joint suddenly feel bereft of leadership? Peggy, Gale, Balme, Livingston, Hardwick, Cotchin has turned into just Hardwick recently it seems.

Hope Benny stays or that leadership is about to get a whole lot worse.

I dont see what options he has to be honest. On field must be able to play cumbo, biggy or Miller next to jack, permanently.

The forward line is a mess, and we will have to completely bottom out now IMV.

RICHMOND

How did they lose that one? The Tigers led by 18 points midway through the final term yet conceded four of the final five goals of the game to go down to Essendon by one point. The Bombers broke Richmond’s run of 13 consecutive wins over them, ending what was the equal longest active streak in the AFL. The defeat left the Tigers six points out of the top eight with a difficult game against Port Adelaide at the MCG next week.

Shai Bolton was enormous and almost single-handedly dragged his team over the line. The star booted two goals from 28 disposals, 13 contested possessions, seven tackles and seven inside 50s. Nathan Broad and Noah Balta were strong in defence, Tim Taranto found a lot of the footy at the coalface and nine of Dustin Martin’s disposals ended up in a Richmond score, including two majors himself.

Room for improvement

Despite the narrow margin, coach Damien Hardwick post-game was livid with his side’s performance, coughing up an 18-point final quarter lead against the Bombers. Hardwick was particularly disappointed with the fact the Tigers allowed Essendon to take 142 uncontested marks and committed 36 front-half turnovers — a stat Hardwick dubbed “just horrendous by nature”. Rhyan Mansell had an opportunity to bury the Bombers late in the game, but shanked his set-shot and kicked the ball out of bounds on the full. Hardwick, though, refused to blame Mansell, instead pointing to his early-game goals and forward pressure. Hardwick revealed Jack Riewoldt (0.1, 11 disposals) was playing under duress. Samson Ryan managed only one goal, while Marlion Pickett also regularly played out of the goal square but could not reel in a mark inside 50. Dion Prestia couldn’t get into the game (11 disposals), while Dylan Grimes was exposed all night.
