It’s a shame the 17 minute applause coincided with our worst period of play . It felt a bit flat on television. Maybe it was different at the game .

Miller did some nice things
If only he could take a mark today. He's definitely better as a follower around the ball than as a inside 50 forward target  :P.

Agree thought he did a few nice things but the one area we want him to be good is in the air and i don't think we are getting that especially as you say if only he could take a few strong marks.

From Robbo's dislikes column:

4. Talent search is afoot

Richmond’s effort is never the query. We know they need talent to restock and the older blokes have their best footy behind them. But that’s no excuse for Sunday’s final quarter. While Butters and Co. went to work, two of Richmond’s game breakers, Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton, disappeared. Bolton had two possessions and Martin one in the last, and although Port had the territory, the two Tigers couldn’t inject themselves into the game. They were pretty good for three quarters, particularly Bolton, but they also finished with 3.6 between them. Not for the first time, they were the difference, and this time in a losing team.

AFL Report Card: Round 11

Ben Waterworth, Ben Cotton and Catherine Healey

RICHMOND

Life after Damien Hardwick has begun for Richmond - and interim coach Andrew McQualter was almost gifted first-up win, only for a classy Port Adelaide outfit to kick away late. There were glimpses of the Tigers’ DNA throughout the match, creating more forward-half turnovers, inside 50s and scoring opportunities as the game progressed. But their lack of polish proved costly as the Power won by 10 points.

In the votes

On a day where players struggled with cleanliness and class, Tim Taranto stood out, booting four of the Tigers’ nine goals and collecting 33 disposals and seven clearances. Nathan Broad and Noah Balta were excellent in defence, while Shai Bolton was lively across the first three quarters.

Room for improvement

Damien Hardwick watched Sunday’s match as a Richmond fan on his couch with beer in-hand. And Hardwick would’ve witnessed the same issues that plagued the Tigers during their topsy-turvy first 10 rounds of this season. Richmond’s lack of polish forward of centre – the team’s biggest flaw to date in 2023 – was on display, booting 3.10 from 26 inside 50s in the first half. Then when the game was up for grabs, match-winners Bolton and Dustin Martin went missing, having just three disposals between them in the final term. For the match, the duo kicked 3.6 between them. Meanwhile, Jack Graham had a mare, finishing with just 11 disposals and going at 33 per cent by foot.

I was watching on TV and didn't even hear it. Yet another reason why he should at least have had a farewell game, but whatever.

Would have been tough for him but Hardwick should have coached this game, could of milked it and got 60,000 plus to send him off.
A mistake but understand the reasons.

How so? He was contributing next to nothing up to that point. Only managed to finally clunk one and kick a goal when he played on someone half his size. Honestly I’m all for getting games into the younger players but he’s got to be able to contribute for more than 5 second patches when the ball is bounced/thrown up/thrown in.

OVERREACTIONS, POSITIVES, NEGATIVES & UNDROPPABLES FOR ROUND 11

Andrew Slevison
SEN
29 May 2023

The Key Takeaway: Tigers not far off, just lacking class

Richmond made life difficult for an in-form Port Adelaide for most of Sunday afternoon.

In Andrew McQualter’s first game as interim coach, the Tigers were competitive aside from a period in the first quarter where the Power kicked five goals in a row.

The club’s ladder position of 15th doesn’t read very well, but the Tigers have been competitive in almost every game this season.

The effort and intent is there for the most part, they’re just lacking a bit of class, particularly forward of centre.

The Positive: Tim Taranto

Take a bow, Tim Taranto.

He was far and away Richmond’s best player against Port.

Taranto finished with 33 disposals and seven clearances, which were both game-highs, plus seven tackles and an equal career-best four goals.

The former Giants would most likely be well clear in the best and fairest count at this stage of the campaign.

The Negative: Forward setup

The forward line setup is not really working at the moment.

The Tigers are crying out for Tom Lynch to return, but in the meantime, McQualter needs to find a way to improve the connection between the midfield group and the forwards.

Veteran Jack Riewoldt is having to play on the best defender each week and is looking a bit sore. He’s doing his best to provide a contest, but isn’t getting much assistance from the ball use going forward.

Dustin Martin was dangerous at times, however, he kicked 2.3 when he probably should have kicked four or five.

The Tigers have produced the sixth most inside 50s this season, yet they have kicked the fifth least points for the campaign.

Maybe it is time to unleash Kaelan Bradtke or Jacob Bauer up forward, or just leave Noah Cumberland in the team.

Time for a radical change?

Put six quick smalls in the forward line and have the mids and half back flankers run the ball in and lower their eyes and pick out a moving target.
Yeah we're already going to vote for him mate, you don't need to keep selling it.....
