Messi hasn't set a World Cup on fire like the aforementioned Maradona and Pele.

Handy but not in same league.

Maradona did not only carry but lit the World Cup in 1986.
Maradona carried one might argue the most poor Argentina who as a team only scored 5 goals in the whole tournament to the final in 1990.
This discussion is pointless Maradona>Messi. :yep

Let him contribute greatly to a win against Germany on Monday then we can wait for 2018.
Comparing players should be done when their careers are over. :yep

yep and JR its not as if I(we) don't rate Messi - imo best player in the world easily and best of his generation. But has a ways to go yet.

Im glad someone else mentioned Garrincha, nice one dioc - Maradona himself said he idolised Garrincha and was the best player he had ever seen(after himself of course)  ;D

for mine - maradona - pele - Garrincha - Cruyff - Messi

next tier Beckenbauer, Zidane, Gullit, Platini - Eusebio - Best

You could put a few Brazilians there. Rivellino would definintely be in the top drawer and in a second tier Zico and Socrates.

Pele is football, didn't see him play but Maradona is king.
Sadly the champ has let himself go but that's what you get with flawed geniuses.

Gert Muller, Jack Charlton, Dino Zoff, Roberto Baggio, Ronaldo, Romario would be up there too.
