The Tigers sit a lowly 13th on the ladder with just four wins and a draw to their name, but Longmuir is wary of the danger they pose.

“A lot of their games that they’ve lost this year have been one or two kicks. They’ve been in every game they’ve played,” he said.

“They’re really dangerous in some of the things that have held them in really good stead for a lot of years.”

Fremantle v Richmond preview

Jack Makeham
SEN
7 June 2023

Saturday’s match is poised to be a pivotal clash for two sides on the outside looking in of the finals hunt.

Fremantle are currently riding a four-game winning streak, having bounced back strongly from their less-than-ideal start to the season.

On the other hand, Richmond is keeping themselves just within sight of the top eight, having won three of their last five in an effort to offset winning just one game through the first seven rounds.

With both clubs needing all the momentum they can get, the Dockers and Tigers will certainly be giving their all.

Fremantle has looked a completely different side since changing from a conservative game style to a method of free-flowing ball movement, and their dramatic increase in points per game has reflected that.

Yet this hasn’t come at the cost of their trademark stingy defence, which was very much on display in last week’s impressive victory over the Demons.

This doesn’t bode well for a Richmond side that has had plenty of trouble scoring this season, boasting the 13th ranked attack as they are plagued with issues with their inside 50 entries.

Considering all but one of Fremantle’s wins have seen them score over 100 points, Richmond will likely be looking to turn this match into a scrap, something which we have seen them do multiple times this season.

The Tigers certainly have the talent to take down the red-hot Fremantle, but the Dockers on their home turf are certainly a tough task.

Tip: Fremantle by 17 points.

Tigers aim to keep Fremantle's high-flyers grounded

Justin Chadwick

June 9, 2023 5:47PM

Richmond have trained their focus on keeping Fremantle's star defenders grounded leading into their round-13 AFL clash at Optus Stadium.

The Dockers (6-5) have thrust themselves back into premiership calculations with a stunning four-match winning streak that included a win over Melbourne at the MCG.

Defenders Alex Pearce, Hayden Young, Brennan Cox and Luke Ryan have played a key role in Fremantle's success, with their intercept marking and rebound proving crucial.

Richmond utility Liam Baker, who could play up forward against the Dockers, said his team must restrict the influence of Fremantle's star-studded defence.

"You can't just be letting their backs fly. We won't be doing that," Baker told reporters on Friday.

"We're going to keep them accountable. They'll be keeping ours as well.

"We just have to play five per cent better than we have been.

"We've been going alright ... but (Fremantle) are flying at the moment."

The Dockers will be without ruckman Sean Darcy (hamstring) and midfielder Jaeger O'Meara (suspension) in their quest to post a fifth-straight win.

Darcy's absence means Luke Jackson will take on the lead ruck role, with forward Josh Treacy his back-up.

Last week's sub Sam Sturt has been included in the 22 to play a full-time forward role, while winger Liam Henry also comes in.

Midfielder Will Brodie, who has been in hot form in the WAFL, couldn't be considered for a senior recall after injuring his ankle at training.

Richmond welcome back defender Nick Vlastuin (corked leg) but lose Noah Cumberland (calf).

The Tigers notched their first win under interim coach Andrew McQualter last week when they edged past GWS by six points.

With four wins, one draw and seven losses to their name, 13th-placed Richmond need to beat Fremantle to keep their faint finals hopes flickering.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 13

Fremantle versus Richmond

Andrew Slevison
SEN
9 June 2023

Milestone men Baker and Rioli to combine for 40+ disposals

Liam Baker, who plays his 100th game, has been in solid form again this year and is averaging a career-best 22.1 disposals.

He has reached the 20-touch mark in eight of his 12 games this year and has picked up 21 and 22 in his last two against Fremantle.

Daniel Rioli, who plays his 150th game, is also averaging a career-high 23 touches so far in 2023.

His lowest tally this season has been 17 which came in last week’s win over GWS, but he had not been below 20 prior.

Rioli’s record against the Dockers isn’t overly flash, averaging just 15 touches across five outings, but he has picked up 20 and 23 in his last two visits to Optus Stadium (against both Freo and the Eagles).

Based on the above, we’re banking on the Richmond milestone men to amass at least 40 disposals between them.

Amiss and Frederick to combine for 3+ goals

Jye Amiss is developing nicely for Fremantle.

In 2023 he has kicked 19 goals in 10 outings, including 11 in his last four courtesy of three hauls of three.

He went goalless in his first appearance of the season, back in Round 2, but has kicked at least a goal a game since.

Similarly, Michael Frederick has booted at least a goal in all bar one of his games this season.

He has tallied 14 in nine overall in 2023 and has kicked two or more on five occasions.

The Dockers duo, while having never kicked a goal against the Tigers between them (Amiss 0 games, Frederick 2 games), are in scoring form and should combine for at least three goals on Saturday night.
