No surprise when you think about it

Bookies aren't going to be seduced by Swans 25 goal belting of the Eagles. Outside of that their form has been very average

Until Tgursday night our form's been good and we'd beaten  teams above us

Sydney comfortably beat us in Adelaide.  Not so sure

Not saying we will win or should be favourites

But a win 10 weeks ago wouldn't amount to much in the bookies eyes I would have thought

Recent form over the last month is all they'd be interested in

Sydney will jump much closer than their current odds.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

The Swans will welcome back Buddy Franklin for their crucial clash against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.

Franklin will replace Joel Amartey in the side, who has been managed after returning from a serious injury last month.

Chad Warner will miss at least one more match as he recovers from a calf strain.

Franklin could be joined back in the side by defender Tom McCartin.

Can the Swans beat the Tigers at the MCG on Thursday?

The Swans have an imposing record against Richmond, but have been blown off the park in their last two at the MCG.

RICHMOND TIGERS: $1.68 (via Ladbrokes)
SYDNEY SWANS:      $2.25 (via betr)

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT

Sydney has won the first quarter in each of its last nine matches against opponents that were ranked in the bottom four.

Richmond have only won three of nine games at the MCG in 2023.

THE MATCH-UP

Round 17 of the AFL kicks off with what’s essentially an elimination final, as both the Tigers and Swans are separated only by percentage on the ladder and both in desperate need of a win to keep slim chances of finals footy afloat.

Richmond were humbled by Brisbane last week to the tune of 81 points, while the Swans played out a thrilling draw against Geelong, a game it absolutely should have won if not for some shambolic goal kicking.

These clubs last met at the Adelaide Oval during Gather Round, seeing Sydney claim a 122-78 victory behind a dominant 46-9 final quarter. Tom Papley was immense during that fixture, kicking a career-best six goals from 25 disposals. His form has tapered off dramatically since then.

That was the third consecutive win for the Swans against Richmond. Sydney also kicked over 100 points in all three games.

RICHMOND BOUNCE BACK

Last Thursday night at the Gabba was a horror show for the Tigers; one goal in the first half was just not good enough as Brisbane ran riot.

Tim Taranto – 30+ disposals:
Tim Taranto had his first poor game for Richmond, only managing 21 disposals, which was well down on his average of 31 so far this season. In round five against the Swans, however, Taranto had 34 disposals and will be looking to bounce back in a big way.

Shai Bolton – 20+ disposals & 2 + goals:
Shai Bolton had a quiet game last weekend, which he is known to do now and then. Prior to that he had kicked 13 goals in eight games, as well as having 20 or more touches in six of those eight games. He is the catalyst for Richmond’s chances on Thursday.

SYDNEY FORGET LAST WEEK AND MOVE ON

Yes the Swans should have won last week against Geelong, but at least they didn’t lose?

The Swans should head into this weekend full of confidence: the Swans have played better each week since their bye. If that upward trend continues, they should take care of Richmond on Thursday to make it four wins in a row.

Lance Franklin 3+ goals:
Lance Franklin returns for what will more than likely be his last game at the MCG (unless the Swans make finals) in what is sure to be an emotional night for the champ, who has averaged three goals at the MCG from 113 games.

Errol Gulden 25+:
Errol Gulden is fast becoming a favourite at CODE Bet and on the CODE Bet Daily podcast: he’s taken a big step forward this season and in the last three weeks he has had 27, 32 and 26 disposals along with five goals. Errol has at least one goal in six of his last seven matches.

Braeden Campbell – 15+ disposals:
Angus Sheldrick – 20+ disposals:

Two young and unheralded players in the Swans midfield ranks are Braeden Campbell and Angus Sheldrick, both were fantastic against Geelong. Campbell kicked two important goals and now after 40 games of AFL footy looks set to take the next step.

The same goes for Angus Sheldrck who has had 69 possessions in the last three games to go along with three goals.

PAPLEY TO FIRE UP

Tom Papley – 15+ disposals & 2+ goals:

It feels weird to say that Tom Papley is not in great form at the moment despite kicking at least one goal in 14 of 15 games this season, with a total of 25 for the year.

He did kick six of those 25 against Richmond in round five and hasn’t kicked more than two goals in a game since.

But in eight games against Richmond Papley has 16 goals at a perfect two a game, as well as averaging 15 disposals a game. If he has 15 and two on Thursday the Swans will likely win.

THE PICK

With those three straight wins over Richmond, the Swans clearly have had the wood over Richmond in recent years. Despite three straight losses at the MCG for Sydney, the Swans should be slightly too good for the undermanned Tigers.

Richmond v Sydney preview

Charles Goodsir
SEN
6 July 2023

Round 17 of the 2023 AFL Premiership season kicks off at the MCG where the Richmond Tigers are set to host the Sydney Swans on Thursday night.

Both sides come into this contest with a 6-8-1 record following the Swans’ disappointing draw against Geelong. Sydney arguably played the perfect game against the reigning premiers and dominated for four quarters but were simply unable to execute in front of goal with an inaccurate 6.18.

Lance Franklin is in line to return in what will likely be his final game ever at the MCG. The Swans have also won their past three encounters against the Tigers dating back to Round 3 2021.

Richmond are coming off the back of an 81-point thrashing against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba and would be eager to bounce back in front of their home crowd.

After a rocky start to the year amd some criticism from sections of the media, Tim Taranto has easily been Richmond’s best in 2023 and has built a strong case for an All-Australian blazer at season’s end.

Richmond and Sydney are 1.5 wins outside the top eight and a loss could spell the end of one of the season for one of these teams.

Tip: Sydney by 22 points

THE 4 CERTAINTIES FOR RICHMOND VERSUS SYDNEY

Jack Makeham & Seb Mottram
SEN
6 July 2023

Tim Taranto 25+ disposals, 7+ tackles

Tim Taranto will have to set an example tonight.

The Tigers were completely devoid of life last week against the Lions, playing with some of the lowest intensity levels that we have seen from them all season.

In order to bounce back from this, Richmond will look to the man that has led the team in work rate all season.

Taranto paces the Tigers in both disposals and tackles, leaving everything on the field on both sides of the ball.

Averaging 31.3 touches and 6.9 tackles per game this season, the star midfielder should pile up the stats once again tonight.

Shai Bolton 18+ disposals and a goal

Last week aside, Shai Bolton has been on a stretch of blistering form since starting off the year slower than expected.

The Tiger is averaging 24.3 touches and 1.5 goals per game over the last two months, boasting multiple games with over 30 touches.

Along with most of Richmond’s squad, he was one who didn’t have a good night against the Lions, and will certainly be looking to bounce back.

Expect Bolton to step up in what is looking like a do-or-die affair for the Tigers.

Papley to kick at least one goal

He’s only gone goalless once this year, loves the big stage and fires up when his side needs a win.

It’s all set up for Tom Papley. Richmond had no answers for the 26-year-old star Swan in Gather Round when Papley put six goals on the Tigers. He’s also got 11 goals in his last three games against Richmond.

Richmond’s defence could leak again in Round 17 and Papley would be the beneficiary with a big game. But even in a tight one, he'll hit the scoreboard.

Gulden to have 20+ disposals & 5+ inside 50s

Errol Gulden has proved one of the major beneficiaries of Chad Warner’s ongoing absence and the star Swan is primed for another big game on Thursday night.

One of the smoothest movers in the game, Gulden cut the Tigers to ribbons in Round 5 with 25 touches and a whopping 12 inside 50s.

He hasn’t gone below 26 touches in his last three and for a player just about to turn 21, is impressively improving as the season goes on.
