Mini's post-match press conference:

WATCH HERE: https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1392017/round-20-mcqualter-post-match

---------------------------------------------------------------

* 2.5 to 3 quarters we were right in the fight, really competitive, and giving ourselves every chance, but in the last quarter they were just too good really. Around the ball mainly, and clearly they got dominant in the clearance part of the game, and from there we struggled to get the ball out of our defensive 50. It just became too overwhelming.

* They had 75 entries which is way too many. It's been an issue for us for a while. Hard to win giving away that many entires. A combination of stoppages and transition. We are still working on it.

* Disappointing to give away undisciplined 50s. A moment of selfish frustration hurts the team. Hopper one was stiff. Didn't see the Balta off the ball one.

* Ladder doesn't lie. We were competitive for 2.5 to 3 quarters against a Top 4 team. But over 120 minutes at the moment we are still a bit off. We think we can be better and we are in a rush to do so. We are going to find things from this gain where we can improve for next week.

* Improved F50 efficiency?
Quite a few things. Part of our defence helps set up easier scores. No Lynch means we've had to find a mixture of scoring options (Dusty, Bolton).

* Soldo was outstanding in the first half. Got tired in the second half. Both Nank and Soldo have played together in a premiership so we know they can play together.

* Dusty - first half was special. We ask him to do a lot of things and he is still doing things defensively. He is really into it, loving his footy and the challenge and hooked on winning. His energy whips through our group.

* 5-day break until Friday night vs Dogs?
From our experiences in 2020, we love the quick turnaround. Players want to play. They don't have to train. It will be a light session on the track this week.

* We haven't used the carrot of finals, but everyone is aware of it. We just focus on getting better at things as well as on the things we are doing well. Ultimately, if we are good enough to win the games then we'll be there.

* As coach he's experiencing the good games, the bad games, and the experiences within them. Still getting txts most weeks from Dimma and getting encouragement.

‘Selfish’ Tigers frustrate coach with senior players in the gun

Caretaker Richmond coach Andrew McQualter has bemoaned “moments of selfishness” from Noah Balta and Jacob Hopper which led to Melbourne goals on Sunday at the MCG.

The pair gave away 50-metre penalties to Jacob van Rooyen and Alex Neal-Bullen respectively, turning difficult chances at goal into certainties from the goal square.

The Tigers led by 15 and 20 points respectively when the incidents occurred, and they served as crucial momentum changers as Melbourne charged towards an emphatic 32-point victory in the end.

“It’s always frustrating to give undisciplined free kicks away, because the reality is it hurts the team,” McQualter said post-game.

“A moment of selfishness from an individual with the frustration, or whatever it is, but it has a bigger impact, so we need to get it out of our game.

“They’re senior guys, I think they are aware of what happened and the repercussions of it.”

A win for Richmond would’ve catapulted them into the top eight, but they’re now 11th and half a game outside.

“The ladder doesn’t lie so I think the reality is we were competitive against a top-four team for 2.5 to three quarters, but over 120 minutes of footy at the moment, we’re just a bit off,” he said.

“We think we can be better, we’re in a rush to get better and we’re going to find some things out of this game that we’ll be able to get better at for next week.”

Richmond’s next assignment is a blockbuster clash against the eighth-placed Western Bulldogs on Friday night at Marvel Stadium, with just two points separating the teams.

The Tigers only have a five-day break to prepare, but McQualter said that wouldn’t be an issue.

“It’s awesome. I think the beauty of 2020, what we learned is we love turning around really quick those games and playing on four and five-day breaks,” he said.

“Everyone loves playing footy, that’s what we’re here for, right? So the players don’t have to train much, they actually enjoy that, they get to roll out and play in five days.

“It won’t be a massive week on the track.”

Boosting Richmond’s hopes for a win is the return of suspended ruckman Toby Nankervis, and McQualter had no qualms playing him in the same side as Ivan Soldo.

“They’ve played in a premiership together, so we know they can play together,” he said.

Richmond will now probably have to win three of their last four games to make the finals.

“Everyone’s aware of the situation we’re in, the comp being so even,” he said.

“Ultimately if we’re good enough to win those games and we deserve to be there, we’ll get there.”

Gotta love the media

Selected quotes about the 50m penalties

Conveniently missed the bit where he said he thought Hopper was unlucky

Even said he didn't see the actual Balta incident

Well done journos  :clapping

Thinking exactly that as I was reading it.

And the Balta one was so minor. Big penalty for something minor
