RICHMOND

It was an underwhelming showing from the Tigers on Friday night, comprehensively outplayed in all facets of the game and at no stage did they look even close to the Bulldogs’ level. That sentiment was echoed by an evidently flat Andrew McQualter post-match, although the caretaker coach was adamant that Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin weren‘t managed. With it, Richmond’s season is all but over as it dropped down to 13th on the ladder with just three rounds remaining, while Jacob Hopper will miss next week with concussion.

In the votes

Jack Riewoldt continues to battle hard in attack and do the brunt of the heavy lifting with no Tom Lynch, with the veteran kicking 3.2 in a strong display. Tim Taranto and Jayden Short each registered 25 touches, but probably didn‘t have their usual impact, while Noah Balta had some bright moments in defence.

Room for improvement

It started in the midfield, and sure, the Dogs‘ on-ball unit is always hard to even just match. But the Tigers were comprehensively smashed in contested possessions (-38) as it was constant one-way traffic. Richmond otherwise was on the backfoot early – conceding nine goals in the first term – and simply couldn’t match the Dogs’ intensity all around the field nor get the game on its term for any meaningful stretch.

The Key Takeaway: Waved the white flag

Did Richmond just surrender its season?

If the season was actually on the line, somebody forget to tell the players.

The Tigers were battered by the Bulldogs from the outset. When Caleb Daniel, at 171cm, took a contested mark for the first goal of the game, you just knew it was not going to be their night.

The entire first quarter certainly didn’t feel like finals were on the line. And the club certainly didn’t act like there was everything to play for by managing Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin at the same time, then pulling co-captain Dylan Grimes out late.

Perhaps the club isn’t keen on pushing for finals, which is fine because they probably wouldn’t do any damage, but at least show a bit more care because that was a pathetic performance.

The Positive: Kids getting experience

Getting games into kids is a plus.

Tylar Young, Sam Banks, Matt Coulthard and Jacob Bauer are all getting some valuable minutes.

The Tigers need to be able to fall back on some youth in the coming years so having some younger players pushing through is a bonus.

The Negative: Lack of respect shown

As mentioned earlier, it was just a poor effort from the Tigers. Yes, the five-day break didn’t help, but what they dished up wasn’t good enough.

They showed zero respect to Marcus Bontempelli and Adam Treloar while Tom Liberatore bullied the Richmond midfield.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan did as he pleased in the first quarter when kicking four goals from seven disposals. He touched the ball just three times in the second and third terms combined after the Tigers did put some work into him.

But the damage had been done and the game was quickly taken away from the Tigers.

Wasn't sure where to post this but seeing we just played against them i thought this as good a place as any.

Does anyone rate JUH. So far ive been underwhelmed and there has been a lot of hype about this kid.

He manhandled and push aside broad in a few 1vs1 which was hard to watch. I don’t think he will be the next buddy but he definitely has class.

Yes we must win all 3 games but we are also reliant on other results falling our way, which is highly unlikely.

I posted earlier 3 games this year have cost us finals. So it is a wasted season

I was talking sbout 3 games early in the year that have cost us finals IMHO. Narrow losses and the draw where we coughed up winning positions. Win those 3 and we have 12 wins and needing only one more to lock in finals
