The Dogs have lost to injury both Keith (concussion) and Bruce (ACL).

However, the Dogs in desperation for a key back may rush back Liam Jones.

"hasn't played since suffering a badly broken forearm against North Melbourne in round 14, but the Tasmanian is pressing to return ahead of schedule this weekend. The 32-year-old will need to prove his fitness ahead of a round 21 fixture that has significant September ramifications for both sides".

Full breakdown of round 21’s biggest games and what the results mean for the race to the top eight

A series of ‘eight-point’ games will shake up the final month of the AFL season and set the opening week of finals in motion. Who will lock in the remaining top eight spots?

Josh Barnes
HeraldSun
August 2, 2023

WESTERN BULLDOGS (8th, 40 pts, 105.7%) v. RICHMOND (11th, 38 pts, 97.9%)
Friday, 7.50pm (AEST), Marvel Stadium

Last time:
R4, 2023, MCG – Richmond 12.12 (84) def by Western Bulldogs 12.17 (89)

Last five meetings:
Western Bulldogs 1
Richmond           4.

Recent form:
The Dogs have lost three of their last four but each of those losses have come by 12 points or less. The Tigers had won three in a row before losing to Melbourne last weekend.

Player availability:
The Dogs have lost Josh Bruce to an ACL injury but are hoping Liam Jones (arm) will return and Ed Richards (illness) will be good to go. Toby Nankervis (suspension) will return for Richmond, with Jayden Short’s hamstring will be tested again.

TAB odds:
Western Bulldogs $1.62
Richmond            $2.30.

Consequences:
A loss puts finals almost out of reach for Richmond, with a poor percentage meaning it has to win more games than Carlton and Geelong to get past them and into the eight. The Dogs meanwhile need to win three of their last four to reach finals, which includes games against Hawthorn and West Coast. A loss to the Tigers puts a heap of pressure on a round 24 game in Geelong and makes a home elimination final unlikely.

Prediction:
Dogs by 12.

Predicted season finishes:
Western Bulldogs - 6th (13-10 record)
Richmond          - 10th (11-11-1)

Dogs or Tigers? Western Bulldogs vs Richmond: round 21 Friday night predictions

It’s a ladder-shaping clash as the Western Bulldogs host Richmond on Friday night at Marvel: do the odds like the Dogs to bite back, or the Tigers to roar?

Jaymz Clements
Codesports
August 2, 2023 - 2:45PM

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT

* The betting favourite has won 15 straight times at Marvel.
* Richmond hasn’t covered the line in its last seven games when playing at Marvel.
* Four straight Bulldogs games have gone under the points total mark.

THE MATCH-UP

A massive Friday clash awaits fans this week as the Western Bulldogs host Richmond in a September-shaping match up.

If the Bulldogs win, they should have no problems making the eight – with games against the Hawks and West Coast to come – while a Tigers victory would vault Richmond over the Dogs and give their finals chances a shot in the arm, despite a tough closing draw.

A loss for either wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it would put the loser behind the 8-ball in terms of playing finals.

The two teams last met in round 4 at the MCG, where the Bulldogs pulled off a ripper 89-84 win, their first in four tries against the Tigers since 2019.

The Dogs have lost three of their last four by an average of 6.3 points, while the Tigers have won three of four, but were run over by the Demons last week in losing by 32 points.

Richmond is ranked 11th and the Dogs 12th in the AFL for points per game at 82.3 and 81.1 respectively, while the Doggies defence sits 6th (conceding 76.7 an outing) and the Tigers 12th (84.1).

In its last two games at Marvel Richmond has managed 48 points against Gold Coast and 52 in a draw with Fremantle, while the past four Bulldogs games have all gone under the total points line.

CAN THE DOGS BITE BACK?

Losing Josh Bruce to a knee injury is a huge blow for the Bulldogs; they were outscored 61-27 by GWS last week in Ballarat once he went down.

The calls for this forwardline to deliver consistently have grown louder as the season has progressed and despite the midfield bulls of Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore delivering excellent seasons, Adam Treloar adding class and Jack Macrae always getting plenty of the pill Luke Beveridge’s squad as a whole have been underwhelming.

Just like an early ‘00s bar doing shot specials, they need more from their Baileys; Smith, Dale and Williams.

At least their captain is standing up. In seven straight games and in 12 of his past 13, Bont has gone for 25+ disposals while kicking 11 goals across those contests and has also booted at least one goal in his last three against Richmond at Marvel.

His midfield mate Tom Liberatore is having the best season of his career, with Libba averaging over 28 touches a game and racking up 30+ in the last three straight games.

A lot of the inconsistency of the Dogs forwardline can be attributed to Amazing Disappearing Man Aaron Naughton who can look like the best forward in the comp and go completely MIA in the same game. But he does love playing the Tigers, having booted 3+ goals in three of his last four games against the Tigers.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan isn’t doing his team too many favours in that department either.

Ugle-Hagan managed a solitary behind in last week’s lost to the Giants, and has now kicked 26.32 for the season. Against the Tigers in round 4 he could only muster two behinds, but will relish being back under the roof at Marvel, where he has kicked 20 of those goals in 10 games.

Cody ‘The Flea’ Weightman is another Marvel specialist with 47 goals in only 23 career games under the dome, with 18 of them coming over his last five games there.

ONE LAST ROAR?

Last week’s loss to Melbourne was a big hit to the Tigers season and things don’t look to get much better as the Tigers head to the un-happy hunting ground of Marvel.

In the past five seasons the Tiges are 4-8-1 at Docklands and haven’t covered the line in seven straight games.

Richmond, however, will be looking to welcome back big ruckman Toby Nankervis from suspension and Jayden Short from injury.

If they want to turn that form line around, it will be thanks to their midfield cadre of Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper and Shai Bolton, along with the ever-reliable Dustin Martin. The likes of Dion Prestia, Trent Cotchin and Liam Baker didn’t have enough influence late last week, and Taranto’s numbers have dropped over the past five weeks.

Taranto might have dipped a touch from his rampaging mid-season form, but still had 24 touches and a goal against the Demons last week. On top of averaging over 30 disposals a game this year, Timmy T has kicked a goal in 11 of his last 14 games.

But Bolton is thriving after having been thrust into the midfield by interim coach Andrew McQualter and averaging a career-high 22 disposals a game, while also still hitting the scoreboard, having kicked 23.23 for the season. Bolton also doesn’t mind taking on the Dogs, having snagged 2+ goals in three straight outings against the Sons of the Scray.

Dusty has been one of the constants over the past six weeks, averaging 26.5 touches a game in that stretch, and has kicked 2+ goals in Richmond’s last four games. Dusty averages over 27 disposals and a goal a game against the Dogs across his illustrious career; the Tigers will need that and more to have a hope of winning this week.

GOAL KICKER PLAYER PROP

Over his long and storied career Ol’ Faithful Jack Riewoldt has a pretty handy record against the Western Bulldogs: in 16 games, he has 45 total goals, and has kicked at least 2+ in his last seven straight against them at Marvel.

Big Jack hasn’t managed multiple goals in a game since round 15 against Freo, but under the roof (where he has 124 majors in 47 games) he should find his way to a couple.

THE PICK

Richmond’s form (and inability to score) at Marvel is tough to ignore, but they have won six of their past eight games, while the Western Bulldogs have dropped three of four and their injury woes also pose a problem. Still, the Dogs should get Liam Jones back and are 6-4 at Marvel this season; it’s hard to see the Tigers having quite enough midfield firepower to match the Bont and co.

BEST BET: Western Bulldogs 1-39:

The Blowtorch: Round 21

Ben Cotton, Catherine Healey and Jono Baruch
Fox Sports
August 3rd, 2023

Bulldogs’ burning question: How does the depleted backline hold up?

The Dogs lost two of the players they could least afford to after injury setbacks sustained against GWS to Josh Bruce (ACL) and Alex Keath (concussion). Liam Jones will be back, but with Ryan Gardner in some doubt it leaves an already thin and undersized Dogs defence even more depleted when they take on Richmond on Friday night in a key area of vulnerability for Luke Beveridge’s side. The Dogs however do come up against a Richmond attack that’s lacking firepower and height without Tom Lynch, with Jack Riewoldt taking on a massive workload inside 50. No matter, how Beveridge’s back six fares without several key members will be a key watch.

Tigers’ burning question: Is this their last roll of the dice for 2023?

The Tigers stayed with Melbourne for three quarters last week before running out of a gas in an honourable loss. But unfortunately, honourable losses won’t cut it for Andrew McQualter’s side in its unlikely bid to make finals under the caretaker coach, having gone 6-3 since he took over the reins from Damien Hardwick. This week’s game is particularly crucial for Richmond in coming up against a fellow finals contender in the Bulldogs, who currently occupy eighth spot on the ladder. It’s also worth noting that Richmond’s percentage of 97.9 is clearly the worst of the side in the finals mix, so it can barely afford to step another foot wrong. “Richmond’s way in is to take the Bulldogs’ place. I feel like this is probably it for Richmond. If they lose touch with the Bulldogs and lose tomorrow night, I suspect they’re too far back,” Fox Footy AFL 360 co-cost Gerard Whateley said.

Western Bulldogs vs Richmond Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
3 August 2023

A crunch clash between 8th (Dogs) and 11th (Tigers) which could define the season for one of these two sides.

The Western Bulldogs enter this off the back of a disastrous loss to GWS after they led by 29 points at half-time. It was their third defeat in four games which has seen them slip precariously to the edge of the eight.

Richmond had been in fairly good nick against Melbourne until they were rolled over late by the Demons. The Tigers, who had led by 20 points in the third term, conceded the last six goals to eventually go under by 32 points. Like the Dogs, it was a disappointing loss.

It presents a situation where both of these teams desperately need a victory to keep their finals aspirations alive.

The venue is a tricky one for the Tigers as they have not won there in their last six attempts, dating back to Round 9, 2021. That run includes a defeat to Gold Coast in Round 7. They’ve also lost their last four to the Dogs at Marvel, dating back to 2013.

The Bulldogs don’t mind playing under the roof, winning six times there in 2023, but have been beaten on four occasions at Marvel including three times since Round 12.

From a head-to-head perspective, the Dogs edged the Tigers by five points at the MCG earlier this year, but the yellow and black had saluted thrice on the trot prior.

With so much on the line and both sides showing glimpses of decent form last week, this promises to be some sort of footy match.

It just appears as though the Tigers have their attacking game up and running in a more free-flowing nature than the Dogs do at present.

It’s a genuine 50-50, but we’re siding with Richmond simply because their most recent form has netted more victories and they possess marginally greater depth.

Tip: Richmond by 6 points.

THE 4 CERTAINTIES FOR WESTERN BULLDOGS VERSUS RICHMOND

Hugh Fitzpatrick & Lachlan Geleit
SEN
4 August 2023

Back for another week, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the Round 21 Friday night clash between the Western Bulldogs and Richmond at Marvel Stadium.

Dion Prestia to have 20+ disposals

Dion Prestia has been a model of consistency in recent weeks.

While he’s averaging just 22 disposals per game this season, Prestia hasn’t dipped below the 20-touch mark since Round 10.

The inside midfielder picked up 20 touches in Richmond’s earlier clash against the Bulldogs this season, and he’ll hope to find more of it under the roof on Friday.

Up against a strong Dogs on-ball unit, a lot rests on Prestia and Tim Taranto’s shoulders to break even at the source.

Shai Bolton to kick at least one goal

Richmond half forward Shai Bolton has found some form in recent weeks.

On top of his average of nearly 25 disposals a game over the last month, Bolton has goaled in all of his last three appearances.

Last time against the Dogs Bolton booted three majors, and he’ll hope to be as potent in front of goal again on Friday night.

With Dustin Martin out, he may need to have a big game if Richmond are to get up in this clash.

Aaron Naughton to kick 2+ goals

Expect Friday night's clash to be an absolute shoot out under the roof.

Aaron Naughton has had a consistent year without dominating, I’m tipping him to get on the end of some midfield brilliance and kick at least two goals.

Backing Naughton for goals is always fraught with danger given his inaccuracy, but I’m expecting him to have at least five shots on goal tonight and put two through the big sticks.

Bailey Smith to have 20+ disposals

Bailey Smith has been slowly getting back to his best the last few weeks and I reckon he’ll dominate tonight.

The Tigers never send a run with player to opposition midfielders, they back their guns in to beat them in a head-to-head battle.

Tipping Smith will spend some time on the wing and in the guts, meaning he’ll be around the footy and will gather at least 20 touches.

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:

IF ...
the losing margin was 32 points against Melbourne in round 20 ...

THEN ...
the performance was much better than that. Tigers were still leading a third of the way through the last quarter. Dusty’s absence a massive problem for Friday night lights against Bulldogs, but Tigers still a big chance.

THE TEAMS UNDER THE MOST PRESSURE HEADING INTO ROUND 21

SEN’s Dwayne Russell has named the teams under the most pressure heading into Round 21.

1 - Richmond
vs Western Bulldogs – Marvel Stadium – Friday night

“I think it’s getting serious for the Tigers now. Are you a finals contender this season or not?” he began on SEN Afternoons.

“Andrew McQualter has done a great job of steering Richmond back into the finals race mid-race, but the whips are cracking tonight as we head to the final straight and they play a vulnerable Bulldogs who are 8th spot on the ladder.

“So they can grab that spot, Richmond. If they were playing a team that was top then it wouldn’t really matter in the context… but they’re trying to grab the Bulldogs' spot, so they can take that and the Dogs are coming off losing three of their past four.

“If McQualter wants this job, which we all think he does, and Richmond is a real deal when it comes to a finals and premiership contender, I think this one they need to win.”

2 - Western Bulldogs
vs Richmond - Marvel Stadium - Friday night

“Lost three of their last four, currently hold 8th spot and they can be out of the eight with three rounds left if they lose, that’s the bottom line for the Dogs.”

All about the contested ball tonight. If the Dogs get on top in the guts, it's going to become very tough. We need enough inside 50s to exploit the Dogs' lack of height in defence.

If we somehow win tonight, it would be one of our best wins given our outs and having a younger team out there. Up there with that Round 4, 2019 win away over Port.
