WILL VETERAN TIGERS FOLLOW HARDWICK TO SUNS IF HE ACCEPTS GOLD COAST OFFER?

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
3 August 2023

With it looking like Hardwick will coach the Suns from 2024 onwards, SEN Sportsday’s Kane Cornes pondered whether any Richmond veterans would follow their former coach north.

While Dustin Martin has previously been linked to the Suns, Cornes asked Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson whether the likes of premiership skipper Trent Cotchin and veteran forward Jack Riewoldt – who are both out of contract – could join Gold Coast.

Even though Johnson considered a potential triple-swoop a possibility, he expects both Cotchin and Riewoldt to retire one-club players.

Cornes: “If Hardwick, when he goes of Richmond of Cotchin, Riewoldt and Martin will any of those three join him?”

Johnson: “Yeah, it’s a big possibility.”

Cornes: “Is there a possibility all three join him?

“Yeah, of course, there's a possibility.”

Cornes: “I know Riewoldt and Cotchin (are out of contract).”

Cornes: “(Dustin) Martin’s got one more (year).”

Johnson: “It wouldn't surprise me if two of them decided that, ‘The Gold Coast is a spot for me’.

“That wouldn't surprise me.

“But ultimately, I think that Riewoldt and Cotchin deep down will finish Richmond players.”

Cornes: “Yep, 100 per cent.”

While Martin, 32, is expected to play on, it’s unclear whether Cotchin, 33, and Riewoldt, 34, will retire at the end of the year or push on into 2024.

No surprise that it's Cornes than spouts this cr@p.  I don't understand why people read his garbage, it only encourages him.

Dont give the plonker oxygen.

This is so ridiculous.  A big possibility they say, I would say virtually NIL.

Reckon Cotch will do the same

Yes,  Cotch has stated quite a few times that he's not interested going into coaching. So maybe the media might be the go for him.

They'll both be hated even more by oppo fans.....hell even a lot of our own fans can't stand Richo as a commentator... :shh

What's wrong with Richo as a commentator?

Genuinely don't see it. One of a small few who doesn't explode into hyperbole every time the ball bounces and just lets the football on the field speak for itself.

My ideal 'commentary' would be no commentators at all and just the ambient background noise of the crowd and passing seagulls. You don't have some insane person screaming what's happening to you in your ear drum when you watch footy in the park.

The perception among many of our fans is that he tries a bit too hard to be impartial when commentating on our games and as a result tends to overcompensate the other way.... :shh

The less is more minimalist style of Richie Benaud and English soccer commentators is sadly lacking these days....no coincidence that Brenton Speed, a soccer commentator first an foremost,  is one of the few current good ones....  :shh :shh

Ah yes, I took particular exception to how much he overcompensated near the end of the 2017 Grand Final, so much so that Tim Watson had to put an arm round him and remind him that Adelaide would be back in round 1 to try again -- "We fly as one, Richo, we fly as one."  :huh

Well that one example didn't involve him actually commentating and was in a pretty unique set of circumstances given he was about to present the cup after a 37 year drought..... don't think anyone's actually called his love of the club into question, just one aspect of his commentary in relation to our games.... :shh
