FTPs
« on: June 08, 2006, 08:41:49 AM »
I had my site half finished and got a bit carried away and loaded it, and thought i could make changes to the pages i wanted to tweak a bit later.
So, i took the pages off i wanted to edit, edited them (i thought), SAVED them, and then loaded back onto the site - only to find the changes didn't take effect.
Did about 30 times and then gave up in disgust, deleted the site and then systematically destroyed every page i had created - I do have a tendency to fly off the handle a bit lol

Anyone know what i was doing wrong?  Started off using Firezilla until guru OER told me to use WS FTP PRO.  Somehow i don't think it's the programs that are faulty and maybe Moi  :wallywink is doing something wrong.

Any takers?

While you're at it, I've got some video clips (not porn lol) i want to put on the site and a guestbook. Feel free to let me know how to do them lol

Moi, after you uploaded the modified pages, did you make sure they had exactly the same filename as the previous one and did you delete the old one? If yes, then did you refresh your browsers cache before viewing the modified page?

These are just a starter..

Let me try to get my head around this... You saved a web page, uploaded it via ftp to your web space then made a change locally and uploaded it again with the required changes and the same file name (if you just did save then this would be it. If you modified more than just text you would also need to upload the modified graphics and pics.
Is this correct?
If it is then i'd be looking at your web browser cache. clear it and check again.

Pretty much, i had uploaded all the pages onto the web site, then wanted to change the index page and downloaded it and made some alterations.  Did a save and then uploaded it.  But the changes didn't take effect.  I had loaded a photoshop file, and downloaded it to change it to a gif file, so it would show up.  And even after i changed it, still nothing.

I'm starting from scratch again, and won't upload the site until it's completely finished this time.  It's just an exercise - not a site of importance.  Really just to try and learn how to do it for another site i have planned (non-footy lol).  Just trying to learn all the things before i go ahead with it, and try and deal with problems as they come up.

Doesn't sound like fun, but i've enjoyed doing it believe it or not lol

Moi, my advice would be the same as tiga's. When up upload a new version of the same file you need to super-refresh (CONTROL & F5 together) that page to update the cache and see the changes. Otherwise the old version in the cache will continue to show up.

Yep, i did that, MT.  I remembered you telling me when this site wasn't going too good to do the Control F5, but it didn't work.
It was going a bit crazy.  You know how you load the pages and you can't work off line once they're on.  Well, even after i uploaded it back on, i tried opening the index page again and it opened.  I must have somehow had multiple copies of it, even though i didn't do a save as.
I was at work yesterday and i was wondering why my banner didn't work, so i had a look at the source file and it had a photoshp file there, so i thought i'd get home, open up the index page and change the html and changed the banner file to a gif and put it all back on and thought it would work.  It didn't lol.  And after downloading and uploading 30 fricking million times, chucked a wobbly and you know the rest  :rollin
The good part about it, is I have almost rebuilt it to where i was the night before, so i'm getting quicker at this caper.  Actually knew what i was doing this time rather than guessing.  So i am learning even if it's a bit frustrating not knowing when things go wrong how to fix it.  I don't mind things going wrong if i can work out why they happen.  Can't work this one out grrrrr!!!
