Likely be a dead rubber for port by the time the game starts. Away against a limping pies prob better than against the lions at the Gabba.

We beat Port. We finish 10th which would mean we have up pick 11 for Hopper. North will get band 1 comp for McKay and Essendon will get the same for Parish.
Go Tigers!

Our pick (or former pick) will also slide 1-2 places with the suns academy bid matching.

Port Adelaide vs Richmond Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
24 August 2023

Port Adelaide and Richmond enter this Sunday fixture at very different stages of their respective seasons.

The Power are intent on pulling off a top-two finish to secure a home final and to do that they must win, and hope St Kilda defeats Brisbane.

The Tigers are in a different boat in that they’re playing their final game of 2023 after saying goodbye to Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt last weekend.

Will there be two different mindsets out on the Adelaide Oval?

Zak Butters was key in Port’s hard-fought win over Fremantle last week, racking up 31 disposals. The midfielder was one of his side’s best when these two teams last met in Round 11 when the Power won by 10 points.

While they are back in winning form, Ken Hinkley’s side has not had a key forward kick more than three goals since Jeremy Finlayson booted four in Round 14. Do they need their talls, including Todd Marshall, to step up? It could happen here as the Tigers have conceded four or more to an opposing key forward in each of their last five games, including two bags of six to Max King and Nick Larkey.

Will this be Andrew McQualter’s final game as Richmond coach? He is on the club’s shortlist but no decision has yet been made on who replaces Damien Hardwick.

The Tigers have a decent record against Port at the Adelaide Oval, winning five of 10 since 2014, including two of the last three meetings at the venue.

But the Power have a little more to play for this time and should run out winners to tune up for their finals campaign.

Tip: Port Adelaide by 20 points.

Terrible time for a football match. A real dead rubber for us. If we go in with the wrong mentality at real risk of a thrashing. Hope I am wrong.  Also a real danger will be flat after last week's game.

I know that this is being very cynical and negative but why would we pick squads for this dead rubber match. Just announce the side and be done with it for crikey sake....

Yep, fearing a repeat of that game  :help and we'll phone it in like Essendon did last night. Nothing to play for in the last game of the season dead rubber = bruise free footy not wanting to get injured. It will also depend on whether Port will still have 2nd spot to play for (they'll know the Brisbane game result by Sunday), or if they care about who they play away in a QF by finishing 3rd (vs Bris) or 4th (vs Coll).

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 24

Andrew Slevison
SEN
26 August 2023

Port Adelaide versus Richmond

Martin and Bolton to combine for 35+ disposals, 7+ inside 50s and 2+ goals

Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton were devastating in last weekend’s win over North Melbourne.

The Tigers pair combined for 56 disposals, 15 inside 50s and seven goals.

Martin averages 23.1 disposals, 4.9 inside 50s and 1.3 goals per game in 2023. Bolton averages 22.1, 5.6 and 0.9 in those three categories this season.

With the form they’re currently in, we’re with the talismanic duo to combine for 35 or more disposals, seven or more inside 50s and two or more goals.

Finlayson and Marshall to combine for 4+ goals

Port Adelaide’s key forwards haven’t quite been in the scoring form they were earlier this campaign.

Jeremy Finlayson, while kicking 38 goals for the season, hasn’t returned more than four goals in a game since Round 14.

Todd Marshall, who has booted 32 in 2023, hasn’t kicked more than three since Round 12.

Their recent output hasn’t set the world on fire but Richmond’s defence has been leaking goals to key forwards in recent times - Nick Larkey 6, Max King 6, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan 5, Harrison Petty 6, Jacob Van Rooyen 4 and Mitch Lewis 4.

That suggests either Finlayson and Marshall could get off the leash, but for safety’s sake, we’ll combine them for four or more goals rather than relying on one to deliver.
