Ziebell joins Richmond

By Richmond Media - 5 hrs ago

Richmond is delighted to announce former North Melbourne captain Jack Ziebell will join the Club’s coaching ranks in season 2024.

Ziebell played 280 games for North Melbourne across 15 years, including six years as captain between 2017-2022 and over 10 years in the leadership group.

A runner-up in the Syd Baker Medal, his potential as a leader was noticed early in his career when the AFL named him vice-captain of the 22 under 22 side. Shortly after this he became the vice-captain at North at just 23 years of age.

During his playing career he was known for his elite kicking, consistency in finding targets and always throwing himself into the contest.

Richmond General Manager Football Performance, Tim Livingstone, was excited to welcome Ziebell to the Club.

“Jack is a high character leader who has had 15 years experience at the top level. Whilst the majority of his career was played on ball he has also played forward and behind the ball so he has studied the game from all angles and that’s important for the role he will play for us.

“He’s a driven professional who has spent the last part of his career developing his leadership skills with the ambition to take on a coaching role. He exudes passion and excitement about coming to Richmond and helping to contribute to our success.

“As a recently retired player he will bring great benefit to our players and we in turn bring him into a coaching team that is highly experienced and supportive and will help him to develop into the coach he wants to be.”

Ziebell said he was excited to step into a full time coaching role with Richmond.

“This is a great opportunity to work with Adem and the coaches as they embark on a new and exciting journey at the Tigers,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the team and to draw on my experiences as a player to hopefully teach and guide the team to getting back up the ladder.”

Ziebell will commence with the Club for the upcoming pre-season

I have no opinions on the employment of Jack. I just see it as a leader stepping into a coaching role, probably no different to Chris Newman when he decided he wanted to coach. Don’t forget, at the time we were a rabble like north so I don’t think that is a fair reflection. Obviously we’d prefer someone with success but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have good experience and can’t be a good coach. Best of luck !

If I was to go further I would say I’ve never given much thought to the career of ziebell, but now being a Richmond man I take a broader look. He stayed with same club through thick and mostly thin and you have to respect the man for that. Can’t be denied he has been hard at the contest his whole career. It’s hard to judge his leadership given he there wasn’t a great deal of team success but sometimes you just can’t polish a turd. I’m actually excited by this appointment, fresh voice, straight out of the afl system. Had experience with clarko ( like dimma and yze and newman ).

Surely he responded to the wrong post. There were others that it would have been a perfect response to.

I didn't think he was a great leader at North for the few comments I heard him say but you never know, in person he may be a great coach.

HOW ZIEBELL LANDED AS AN ASSISTANT AT RICHMOND AND THE ROLE HE’S BEEN GIVEN FOR 2024

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
16 October 2023

Recently retired North Melbourne great Jack Ziebell is thrilled to land an assistant coaching role with Richmond so quickly post his playing career.

Ziebell decided to hang up the boots in August and soon after highlighted a desire to become a coach at the highest level available to him.

Richmond immediately felt that the 280-gamer would be a strong addition to their ranks under new coach Adem Yze and Ziebell himself feels fortunate to land in such a favourable spot.

Ziebell will work with the likes of David Teague, Ben Rutten and Chris Newman under Yze and he’s looking forward to working with such an experienced staff.

“I couldn't speak more highly of Richmond so far,” Ziebell said on AFL Trade Radio.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to land a role with a great club and I'm going to have some unbelievable support in the coaching ranks at the Tigers.

“With David Teague and Ben Rutten, that’s two former senior coaches as well as Chris Newman, a longtime respected assistant coach, helping drive the new era at Richmond over the next generation which is going to be really exciting to be part of.”

Ziebell says things moved quickly once Richmond flagged their interest in his services and he felt that working at the Tigers would be a perfect fit after speaking to club powerbrokers.

The former Roo feels that he can add a layer to the club’s coaching department as Richmond looks to rebuild following their dynasty between 2017 and 2020.

“I think I wanted to get my foot in the door into coaching post my career,” Ziebell said.

“How that looked, I wasn't sure, it actually moved quite quickly with Richmond, I think we were in touch two weeks ago. “They had a role to fill, so I had a chat with Tim Livingston, Adem Yze and Blair Hartley as well.

“The conversation was pretty fluid and easy. I was really impressed by the way Adem speaks and some of the things he was talking about implementing and how he's going to go about his job.

“I thought it was just like the perfect fit. Obviously, the club sees something in me as a former player moving into the coaching ranks and hopefully, I can add a layer to their coaching department that's going to help the players improve and help build a really positive culture at Richmond.”

Ziebell played all over the ground across his 15 years at Arden Street and he says he’ll work closely with the midfield at Richmond, a position he played for much of his career.

The 32-year-old expects to work closely with Newman around stoppages with the likes of Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Dion Prestia, Shai Bolton and Dustin Martin.

“I'll do a little bit of stuff with Newy (Chris Newman) and around the stoppages as well, which is exciting,” Ziebell explained.

“I played probably the first 10 years of my career as a midfielder and had a number of midfield coaches as well throughout that time.

“You learn a lot throughout your journey and then I obviously played a bit forward as well.

“I've got some versatility in my positions I have played, and a little bit down back as well.

“The experiences I've had throughout my career as a player, I think will help me as a coach be able to communicate with players, be really empathetic towards certain situations and how hard our game is.”

Ziebell commences his work at Punt Road when Richmond’s pre-season begins next month.

WHAT NEW ASSISTANT LIKES ABOUT RICHMOND’S PLAYING LIST

Andrew Slevison
SEN
22 October 2023

New Richmond assistant Jack Ziebell is looking forward to working with what he describes as an “unbelievably talented” group of players.

The North Melbourne champion took a role in Adem Yze’s new-look coaching team last week after announcing his retirement as a player at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

After falling away to a 13th-placed finish in 2023, Ziebell believes the Tigers can bounce back next year due to the strong group of developing players mixed with the established stars at the club.

He is also loves the fact the Tigers have a prized asset in 24-year-old Shai Bolton who he feels is capable of just about anything.

“I think Richmond have a really, really good balance,” Ziebell said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“We’ve got some unbelievably talented young kids coming through at the moment. Between one and four-year players, there’s 21 or 22 at the moment which is a big number.

“We all know the high-quality senior players they have as well, all over the ground.

“You’ve got young guys like Shai Bolton, who for me could be the best player in the competition. He’s an unbelievable talent, he’s freakishly, scarily good.

“I haven’t had a real opportunity to get stuck in as everyone is away at the moment, but I’m looking forward to November 13 when the first to four-year guys come back, meeting everyone and getting into work.

“Then helping deliver better performances and higher standards at training to a great club like Richmond so we can hopefully get up the ladder pretty quickly.”
