RICHMOND

Pass mark: Threaten a finals finish as their new era begins

The Tigers are tricky to get a read on. They certainly thought they were still in the premiership window heading into 2023, trading out of two drafts to land Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto. Instead a weak back-line and injury-hit forward line saw them take a major step backwards, and Damien Hardwick’s exit as coach marks a clear line of demarcation between the dynasty era, and whatever this new beginning under Adem Yze will be. If Tom Lynch is fit, and if the defence gets its house in order, this list is still reasonably strong. They could produce a Giants-like bounce-back if everything goes right. But the Tigers could just as easily struggle again, and then you’re left with a list that has gotten very little out of the draft in years. Since 2018, you’re looking at guys like Jack Ross and Marlion Pickett as the most productive picks - plus the questionable 2021 draft class where they had five top-30 picks and have seen Josh Gibcus hit by injury, and Tyler Sonsie and Judson Clarke show a few signs, but no obvious 200-gamers emerge. An extended period of drafting like that may very well hurt them in the years to come.
