'Impatient' Yze wants Tigers to excite fans

By Shayne Hope, AAP - 4 hrs ago

New Richmond coach Adem Yze is embracing fans’ expectations and says he’ll give his players a licence to thrill.

Self-described as impatient, new Richmond coach Adem Yze is embracing fans’ expectations and says he’ll give his players a licence to thrill in pursuit of success.

Yze, who served a long and successful coaching apprenticeship at Hawthorn and Melbourne, signed on as Damien Hardwick’s full-time replacement at the Tigers in September.

The former Demons forward took the reins at Punt Road this month and has had almost his entire squad together for the first time this week with the return of senior players for duty.

Dustin Martin is back in good shape for what looms as a massive season, with the Tigers superstar out of contract at the end of next year.

But while Martin is ready to hit the ground running, fitness staff are treading cautiously with key forward Tom Lynch (foot) and emerging defender Josh Gibcus (hamstring) after their injury-hit 2023 campaigns.

The trio are key cogs in Yze’s plan to reinvigorate Richmond following three years without a finals victory and the retirement of triple-premiership heroes Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt.

The 46-year-old is acutely aware he has limited time to implement his new game style before the 2024 season but is eager to usher in a new wave of Tiger success in the near future.

“We hope that our fans are excited and we want them to expect a certain game style,” Yze told reporters on Wednesday.

“There’s going to be some ups and downs and bumps along the road, but what I do know is our boys train really hard and they’re driven to get back to where they can see some success (like) they’ve had in the past.

“Our job is to find the next (premiership) and we’re going to be impatient to try to get them there really quickly.”

Yze has already laid out plans for his team to play with “flair” in attack.

“We’ve got to give them the opportunity to go at the game. The best teams play with a lot of speed and with a lot of risk,” Yze said.

“There’s no reason why that when we win the footy back that we can’t play with a lot of dare and risk.

“But on the flip side you’ve obviously got to be really strong in the contest and defensively stable.”

Have a feeling Gibcus will play forward and Balta remain down back. Advantage is they can both be used as swing men

Sounds like Yze places a fair bit of importance on speed so you might be in trouble... :shh

The thing I found interesting was Yze mentioned our "leadership group" a few times.

Glad he knows who made up this year's leadership group because outside the co-captains we the members, supporters and fans were never told.

From the HeraldSun & The Age:

Richmond is weighing up moving key defender Noah Balta into attack for an extended stint next season in an effort to boost the Tigers’ forward potency in the post-Jack Riewoldt era.

With the club’s dual premiership forward Tom Lynch making slow but steady progress from a nagging foot injury and with new coach Adem Yze keen to play a fast-pace, front-half game, the temptation to switch Balta forward looms as one of the club’s key options for 2024.

Yze said the Tigers were looking at bedding down some positional changes ahead of his first season in the role, but was reluctant to yet detail the possible moves.

But the Herald Sun understands that Balta will likely get a crack at playing forward at stages, further evidenced by some light match simulation at a rainswept Punt Road on Wednesday.

Balta, 24, has played forward at times in recent seasons with limited success, having looked more comfortable in defence.

However, if the club can get talented young defender Josh Gibcus back from hamstring issues that cost him the entire 2023 season, Balta could head forward to assist Lynch, former Hawk Jacob Koschitzke and co in attack, while also helping Toby Nankervis in the ruck.

“There might be some changes in personnel and positions and that will come out in the near future,” Yze said when asked about the club’s forward line.

“We are not going to disclose those right now, but we are tinkering with what our best positions are. Tom Lynch is obviously a big pillar in that and if he is not available (early), then some of the kids will also get a bigger go.”

----------------

Yze said the Tigers would turn to former Hawk forward Jacob Koschitzke and youngster Samson Ryan should Lynch have a delayed start to the season.

Lol shocking list management really starting to hit home.

Some times these foot injuries are career ending yet we did what. Oh thats right Jacob Koschitzke who struggled to get a game in a junior Hawks team last year.
Again this is not a complaint just about this year,  Its about  the abysmal neglect we have shown to areas of the list over a long period.

There has to be two camps atm. Camp one thinks we can rebound and maybe win a flag lol.
Camp two thinks we are in for a long period of rebuild. Camp two has been staring us in the face since 2020 yet we continue to kid ourselves imo.

When we won a premiership in 2017 we had just one genuine good kpf in jr and apart from Lynch as a  F/A we have done sweet stuff all about the problem. A band aid here and  band aid there won't fix the problems. You actually have to address the problems with a view to getting quality or loading up with lots and playing the numbers game.

Of course some around here think we didn't need to do ANYTHING while we were winning flags. What an unbelievable mind set.
