Every AFL club’s predicted team for first game

Ben Cotton and Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
February 13th, 2024

Foxfooty.com.au predicts every club’s 23-man squad for its first game of the season, taking into account injuries and suspensions.

Firstly, star forward Tom Lynch has been ruled out of Opening Round – although he aims to play in round 1 against Carlton – while Tyler Sonsie remains suspended due to a late-2023 VFL season strike. Lynch’s absence means both Noah Balta and Jacob Koschitzke should line-up in the forward line against the Suns, with Josh Gibcus’ return from injury allowing Balta to make the move inside 50. It’ll be hard for James Trezise to get a gig with Daniel Rioli and Jayden Short in the side, but he’s given himself every chance with a big pre-season. Other players on the fringe include Judson Clarke, Matt Coulthard, Samson Ryan, Jacob Bauer, Hugo Ralphsmith, Kane McAuliffe and Tom Brown, while we’ve left out Marlion Pickett as he’s due to face court over allegations of his involvement in a series of commercial just days before the start of the AFL season.

Not sure why every best 23 side seems to have Pickett in it.  :help :huh3 As his form plateaued last season his place in the side should have been questioned. I just don't see him as best 23 right now.

Also serious question marks on McIntosh and Clarke being best 23.

Both Dow and Ross are ahead of them as starting 22 again just my opinion

You can add Grimes to that list as well. A clean slate is a clean slate.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Ross ahead of Pickett is laughable. One is a soft plodder and one a hard runner with a hard edge and overhead ability.

The fascination with Ross is embarrassing.

One plays wing one plays on ball, why are we comparing the two?

AFL Round 1 (sic Zero) 2024 teams predictions: Bolters at every club after pre-season practice matches

Ben Waterworth and Jack Jovanovski
Foxsports
25 February 2024

RICHMOND

Mykelti Lefau, while his SSP contract was well-deserved after a strong pre-season body of work, is unlikely to feature in Richmond’s Opening Round side to take on Gold Coast. However, the Tigers will be glad to be able to call upon the New Zealander’s physicality throughout an enduring campaign.

Thomson Dow impressed against the Dees, though Richmond was missing basically its entire midfield, with Tim Taranto, Dustin Marin, Liam Baker and Dion Prestia all absent.

Given what has been said about where players will play and no Tom Lynch.

FB: Vlastuin 187/87 - Young 196/97  - Grimes 193/92
HB: Broad 192/89 - Gibcus 196/?? - Rioli178 /78.

My preference is to bring in Brown for Rioli  who goes to a wing.

C: Pickett 184/84 - Martin 187/90- McIntosh 192/92.
R: Nankervis 199/103 - Taranto 187/87 - Prestia 175/81

Dont like the two on the wings and really think we need to move forward. Still think Dan Rioli should get one wing and give the other to  a good  ball user like  Banks.
Really would prefer Bolton in Prestia,s spot but they have said he will play mainly as a fwd and if honest we need his goal kicking and x factor forward but it does rob the midfield of pace especially.
Have not written Prestia off yet and hope he can avoid injuries and get back close to his best.
They have stated regularly that Dusty will play as a mid so thats where i have put them.
Prefer Naismith against Witts Nanks lack of Height an issue for me here.

HF: Campbell 182/??  - Balta 194/100 - MRJ 179/???????
FF: Bolton 175/?? - Koschitzke 196/96 - Naismith 206/104

I think Kosi, Balta and Bolton are locks and i think the second ruckman likely going by what they have said. The last two spots are maybe a bit of conjecture but i think Campbell looks the most likely of our small fwds atm. there is no way i would pick MRJ but i think the club will.
With a fit Lynch id like the third tall spot to go to Jacob Bauer instead of a ruckman.

Int: Baker - Hopper - Short - Ross - Graham - Dow.

They will not leave any of the named bench players out and i dont have a problem with the first three.
The last three cannot be picked in front of genuine forwards imo. All three atm are behind players picked in front of them in the midfield imo.

Round bloody zero fmd the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
My team

Vlastuin - Young - Grimes
Brown - Gibcus - Broad

Rioli - Martin - Banks
Naismith - Taranto - Prestia.

Sonsie - Balta - Campbell
Bolton - Koschitzke - Nankervis/Bauer if fit.

Baker - Hopper - Short - Dow - Tresize.

I have asked this question many times and no one has come up with an answer.

Is there a group of people who select the team and if yes does the coach have the final say??
