RANKING THE YOUNG CORES OF ALL 18 AFL CLUBS IN 2024

BY SEN
30 November 2023

Which AFL teams have the best young cores in the league?

Some teams like North Melbourne, Gold Coast and Fremantle have a glut of players 23 and under on their list, while the likes of Geelong, Carlton and Collingwood less so given where they are at in their premiership windows.

We’ve gone through each team’s core of players 23 and under, ranked their top five and then ranked every team from 1 to 18 based on the above.

Our ranking from 1 to 18 of all the young cores listed above. The top fives were weighted heavily in these rankings, though depth 23-and-under was also considered.

NOTE: We are only including players who are 23 as of January 1st, 2024

1. Sydney
2. Gold Coast
3. Port Adelaide
4. Fremantle
5. Collingwood
6. North Melbourne
7. Adelaide
8. Hawthorn
9. St Kilda
10. GWS Giants
11. W. Bulldogs
12. Brisbane
13. Essendon
14. Geelong
15. Melbourne
16. Carlton
17. West Coast.

18.

PLAYERS UNDER 24: Jack Ross (23), Rhyan Mansell (23), Jacob Koschitzke (23), Samson Ryan (22), Noah Cumberland (22), Matt Coulthard (22), Thomson Dow (22), Hugo Ralphsmith (22), Jacob Bauer (21), James Trezise (21), Maurice Rioli (21), Tyler Sonsie (20), Sam Banks (20), Josh Gibcus (20), Tom Brown (20), Judson Clarke (20), Steely Green (19), Kaleb Smith (19), Seth Campbell (18), Kane McAuliffe (18) and Liam Fawcett (18)

TOP 5: Josh Gibcus, Jack Ross, Samson Ryan, Judson Clarke, Thomson Dow.

Richmond’s youth stocks are quite hard to decipher.

The success of the club in recent times has somewhat stymied the development of a large chunk of their youngsters which has made it a tricky task in pulling together their top five.

While Noah Balta (who just ticked over 24 in October) finished seventh in the Jack Dyer Medal in 2023, their top best and fairest result of players under the age of 24 was Rhyan Mansell back in 20th spot.

Star Shai Bolton is also outside this list as he’s almost 25.

Jack Ross leads the way from a games perspective with 63. He showed a fair bit last year and is the player from this group that simply has to go to the next level in 2024.

There is a group of players around the 20-22 age bracket who could help the Tigers rebuild on the run, highlighted by Josh Gibcus who is the future of the club. His fellow 2021 draftees Tom Brown, Tyler Sonsie, Sam Banks and Judson Clarke hold the key to any success that comes in the next few years.

The Tigers would love to see the likes of Maurice Rioli Jnr, Thomson Dow, Samson Ryan, Noah Cumberland and Hugo Ralphsmith come on in 2024, while getting more games into shrewd acquisitions Matt Coulthard, Jacob Bauer, James Trezise and off-season recruit Jacob Koschitzke.

It’s a time of change for the Tigers under a new coach in Adem Yze. They have some top-end stars outside of this age scale, but just need plenty of contributions from this emerging group.

League ranking: 18th

Lucky it isn’t an under 25 comp  ::)
Why 24 and under?
Seriously SEN comes up with some dribble at this time of year.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

All 21 the players listed have some potential. Yes still a lot of question marks on them but I am looking for 2024 to sort a lot of them out.

From that 21 we have the workers with some uncut gems like Ryan, Banks and Brown. Just need to add a couple of quality kids over next few trade draft periods, especially 2024

Do any of us really rate what this organisation says about anything to do with Richmond.  An article that's laughable in its stupidity.  ::)

Isn't SEN going broke and Fatchison's empire crumbling? :shh

He is in trouble.

He's just sold the NZ part of SEN back to the mob he bought it from to try and raise money to pay of loans that due with the bank in 2024.

SEN borrowed money when interest rates were low but now they are going up he’s been caught out

Funny how people react to a bit of honesty.

When we have a big group of young  players who are good we are happy to rate them but when the quality is not there and others do the rating we attack them.
People here defend the club with the line yeah but we have been successful and have not had the best of picks.
Well you can't have it both ways and bitch and moan when SEN in this case point out the lack of quality coming thru because of this.

We all know where players are taken in drafts does not always work out to the relative pick. Now and then you find a real goodun with a later pick. The later the picks  though  they tend to fail more often than not and vice versa with good picks..

When you look at where the vast majority of our 18 thru 24 year olds have been taken the quality is largely relative to where they have been picked with some exceptions. Id say this is what sen are basing their rating on that and what players in that age group have done.

Our 18 thru 24 core has been largely put together with picks outside the top 30 and there is only two top 20 picks. Based purely on draft picks we are always going to have a low rating. The hard part is putting a finger on where they might get to and is open to a lot venting.

Most places AFL Clubs etc  age their players from the actual start date of the season opener.
So lets start there.

Imo clubs have 4  list structures when it comes to age.
18 - 21 juniors, 22 - 24 development, 25 - 28 Mature. 29 Plus vets.
Obviously the first two is what this debate is about. Your asking where are we at with the youth in the club? and whare have they been taken so what odds of getting A graders.

We have 24 players aged 18 thru 24 with Fawcett the youngest at 18yrs 11 mth at the season opener and Colina at 24yrs and 10mths.

We have 12 juniors aged 18 thru 21 and 12 development aged 22 thru 24.
Imo juniors are all about finding their feet and showing they deserve further development.

The development group is the juniors we have deemed worthy of further development.

18 - 21 year olds  Juniors goes like this

Fawcett    18yr/11mth  pick 43
McAuliffe  19yr/ 0mth  pick 40
Campbell 19yr/3mth   pick 12 rd
Smith      19yr/4th      pick 49
Green      20yr/2mth   pick 55
Clarke     20yr/5mth   pick 30
Brown     20yr/8mth   pick 17
Gibcus    20yr/11mth  pick  9
Banks     20yr/11mth  pick 29
Sonsie    21yr/2mth    pick 28
Bauer     21yr/9mth    R msd
Trezise   21yr/9mth    R msd

Hard to make a call on this group just too early reckon most do have doubts with some though.

22 - 24 Development

Rioli             22yr/2mth      51
HRS             22yr/4mth      46
Dow             22yr/5mth      21
Coulthard     22yr/10mth    R msd
Cumberland  23yr/0mth     43
Ryan            23yr/3mth     40
Ross            23yr/6mth     43
Koschitzke   23yr/8mth      52
Balta           24yr/5mth     25
Miller          24yr/7mth      63
Mansell       24yr/9mth     R ssp
Colina         24yr/10mth   R unrestricted.

This group is a problem imo. I find myself asking Are we not making calls early enough and moving players on after  juniors.
Koschitzke and Coulthard aside who have only just walked in the doors there is only Balta at this point in time who i would go out of my way to hang onto.

The real question for me. Is media places like sen right to criticise us.
Rather than getting our  backs up because they dare do a critical review of our youth maybe we should be asking are they right?

Maybe it is a bit of low picks and a bit of lack of opportunity caused by a coach loyal to a fault to his premiership and pet players.
