There's a new coach but it's the same old Dustin Martin at Punt Road.

@TheoDrop is live from Tigerland where Adem Yze has put his players through an early dress rehearsal. #7NEWS

Dusty starred playing a half.
Balta went off during the match sim with some "discomfort" but came back on and finished the game.
Dow and Mansell impressed.

Richmond is wrapping up an intra club match at Punt Road, the first real chance for new coach Adem Yze to assess his troops. @bradeningram #9News

Prestia went off early with "hamstring awareness"  :-\.

Dusty dominated for a quarter.

Mansell impressive with goals. As was Dow.

Balta spent all the time up forward. It was a collison where he got hurt [see vision]. Spent a little off before returning.

Maurice Rioli sent one of our VFL players flying on the boundary [see vision].

Lynch may return to the main group in a couple of weeks. What that means for Round "Zero" the Club don't know. We're playing the long game with him.

Summary of match sim from RFC twitter:

FT: Yellow 10.6 66 to Red 9.9 63

Three 20 minute periods.

-----------------

Tyler Sonsie gathers inside 50 and kicks the opening goal of the game for the yellow team with a smooth finish.

Shai Bolton finds Jack Ross with quick hands in the contest who makes it two in a row for the yellow team.

Rhyan Mansell (yellow) follows up a strong tackle by kicking a long range goal in the next contest.

Dustin Martin feeds a handball to Jack Graham who nails the running shot from just inside 50. The yellow team has four.

Josh Gibcus gets involved with a chain of possessions across half back for the yellow team, but the play ends with a Sonsie behind.

Sam Naismith nails the goal from deep in the forward pocket to get the red team on the board just before the first break.

Rhyan Mansell has started this game very brightly.

Dustin Martin is also having no problem finding the football.

A fast burst from Thomson Dow who delivers inside 50 to Mansell who kicks his second.

Mansell finds the ball inside 50 again but gives this one off to his housemate Sam Banks who kicks the goal with a neat finish from the pocket.

Fast transition by the red team brings about a shot at goal inside 50 for Noah Cumberland who finishes the set shot.

Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are getting the red team going in this term with Taranto’s long inside 50 ending in a strong mark by Mykelti Lefau who kicks the goal.

Steely Green has two! He makes no mistake from 45 with his set shot.

The red team are back within 12 points.

Jacob Hopper’s inside 50 finds Mitch Schofield who grabs another goal for the red team.

Kane McAuliffe finds Hopper inside 50 but his set shot is touched off the mark.

Yellows switch the ball straight down the other end and Sonsie bags his second from close range.

McAuliffe’s snap drops short but Steely Green is there to mop up, marking uncontested inside 50 and popping through his third.

Shai Bolton is on the board ✅ He pops through the goal for the yellow team after a good pass inside 50 by Liam Baker.

A clever tap by Noah Cumberland sets up a third goal for the red team with Steely Green soccering it home from the goal line.

Four goals for Steely Green and the red team are in front!

Brilliant link up play between him and Liam Fawcett leads to the goal.

Shai Bolton swoops on a loose ball and snaps a trademark goal. He has two majors and yellow are back in front. Two in a minute for Shai 😍 He is looking very lively.

Liam Baker follows with his first and the yellow team are on a roll.

That’s a wrap for tonight’s match sim.

Dusty dominates in match sim, Prestia leaves track early

He only played 20 minutes of Richmond's match simulation on Wednesday night, but Dustin Martin was in fine form.

DUSTIN Martin starred early in Richmond's match simulation on Wednesday evening, but Dion Prestia left the track early with hamstring awareness.

The injury-prone Prestia has had a torrid time with soft tissue issues over the years, and the Tigers were taking every precaution with the star midfielder in the hitout, the 31-year-old pulling himself from the contest early.

He was only set to be on managed minutes regardless, and the club is hopeful the issue is nothing serious.

Martin carved up the midfield for the first 20 minutes, but ran laps with intent thereafter, having rolled an ankle recently.

Noah Balta is likely to complete a three-pronged Richmond forward line in 2024, with the athletic key looking set to work alongside recruit Jacob Koschitzke and Tom Lynch this season.

Balta presented well as the main man up forward, shadowed by the versatile Ben Miller, and overcome a whack to the hip early in the game.

For the most part, the two sides split into an A and B team, although a few senior faces – Dion Prestia in the opening minutes, Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper – played alongside the younger B side for competitive balance.

Wouldn't be surprised if Prestia hangs up the boots before the MSD....... :shh

From Tom Thomas on twitter:

Intraclub observations #gotiges

Stood directly behind Yze. He was basically silent during play, but if he had a direction he’d give it to a teammate to pass on to the player in question. Training players to communicate and control placement.

Dow was the story. 100% midfield. No one can lay a finger on him and he uses it cleverly. Amazing in traffic. Dunno if he’ll push anyone out of the starting centre but he’s playing.

Dusty all midfield before going off to run laps. Dominated.

Hopper looks fit and confident.

Trezise and Brown looked really sharp down back. Plenty of starting backs missed today so not sure if they’ll play when everyone is fit. I’d say at least one will.

Mansell is in the first choice team up forward. He was lively and had 3-4 shots. Still need more pace in that area
Tom Thomas

We’re going to be a corridor team. It was all about trying to transition the ball through the guts,& they always looked inboard when the footy got out wide

Unfortunately Kosi and Balta were barely sighted. In fact I can’t think of many times they were actively targeted. One of Balta, Kosi and Ryan is gonna miss out if Lynch is fit. That’s one of the big question marks on the 22

----

Shai absolutely dominating up forward and in centre bounce. Baker also winning plenty of centre clearance. It’s gonna be a broad church in the midfield this year I’d say #gotiges

The Thomson Dow thing is real. No one can lay a hand on him.

AFL 2024: Dustin Martin thrills in Tigers intra-club ahead of 15th season

Jon Ralph
HeraldSun
1 Feb 2024

Adem Yze watched on in awe from the Punt Road stands as Dustin Martin warmed up for season 15 with another dominant intra-club contest on Wednesday night.

The club’s megastar midfielder did as he pleased across 30 minutes of action before running laps to prove his minor ankle issue is no impediment to his round zero participation.

Watching on from the club’s balcony was another interested onlooker in manager Ralph Carr, who if all goes to plan will have locked away Martin on a new deal by then.

Playing in the stronger yellow side that contained Shai Bolton and key position players Noah Balta, Jacob Koschitzke, Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young, Martin took a few minutes to shake off his ring rust.

But quickly he was barking instructions, setting up teammates with precise disposal and generally looking every bit the triple Norm Smith Medallist he is.

Martin has dropped four kilograms and looks in superb shape – all perfect leverage for Carr.

Under new coach Yze, Richmond’s new-look side missing premiership stars Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt will need to fast-track a dozen kids to again contend in coming seasons.

On Wednesday Thompson Dow was excellent as a young emerging midfielder while Steely Greene kicked at least three goals as a livewire in the “possibles” team.

It will also fall to Martin, Tom Lynch and the club’s core of 25-30 year olds to bridge the gap given the growing pains likely to come in 2024.

Martin will continue his progression towards zero round against the Gold Coast side he might have joined but his fitness is one less concern for Yze.

THE FRONT SIX

Richmond plans to play a fast brand of attacking football which is “suffocating” in defence, according to defender Hugo Ralphsmith on Wednesday.

And the personnel in the front six is taking shape even if Richmond isn’t yet sure when Tom Lynch, absent on Wednesday, will be ready for senior action.

Noah Balta will play forward alongside Jacob Koschitzke with Liam Baker, Jack Graham, Shai Bolton and Martin playing mid-forward.

Rhyan Mansell will play as the pressure forward and while he won the ball at will he squandered too many chances in the “probables” forward line.

Balta had a brief injury scare then returned to the field from a hip knock but he and Koschitzke were quietish and Richmond’s system bringing the ball forward still needs refinement.

Clearly so much still depends on Lynch as the key target in a year where Martin and Shai Bolton, who scrounged a pair of late goals, will hope to combine for 80 majors.

Football boss Tim Livingstone said the club was “thrilled” with Lynch’s progress from dual foot surgery but no one is prepared to declare him ready for round zero yet.

Yze was a spectacular kick so will hope for better delivery into the forward line on a day where plenty of kicks still hit the ground.

ON THE INJURY FRONT

Josh Gibcus has made a strong return from his hamstring issues and got through another contest, with Jack Ross (toe) and Shai Bolton (ankle) also putting in strong minutes after summer niggles.

But Lynch’s return date is up in the air, with Dylan Grimes battling a calf issue and Nick Vlastuin still in concussion protocols.

Nathan Broad was sick and missed the encounter, and with intercept beast Balta to play forward the defence needs Gibcus to stand tall to play on the forward beasts.

Gibcus will be better for the run as he eased back into action.

Richmond has two list spots open for summer rookie spot and playing in the “possibles” forward line New Zealand-born Mykelti Lefau took a pair of eye-catching contested marks.

Once part of the Melbourne Storm development squad, Lefau did his chances of senior elevation no harm with WAFL mid-forward Mitch Schofield the other contender.

The club’s No. 40 draft pick Kane McAuliff might not be a round 1 smoky given the strong midfield but dominated the club’s first two intra-clubs as a strong midfielder in recent weeks so is one to watch.
