Yze calm in chaos as Tigers save face on the Gold Coast

Mar 10, 2024

Adem Yze reckons he did well to stop his head from spinning during one of the more rollicking AFL coaching debuts.

The Richmond mentor watched his men kick the first goal then concede the next 11 to a Gold Coast team led by former Tigers coach Damien Hardwick on Saturday.

They trailed by 67 points but then kicked seven straight majors of their own to briefly threaten, eventually falling 14.15 (99) to 9.6 (60).

"I try to pride myself on being calm and composed and to be fair I thought we still were in the box," former Melbourne player Yze said of his head coaching debut.

"We could see what was happening, felt we pulled the right levers and it was just an execution thing.

"That's the game of footy; the season's started now, there will be ups and downs and if we win I don't want to walk in here thinking everything's going well."

Yze was up against the hype of Hardwick and the absence of star trio Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch and Toby Nankervis.

“We were all over the shop in the first half on all three phases and our players know that,” Yze said.

“They smashed us at stoppage, we couldn’t lock the ball in the front half, and we couldn’t get the ball back off them when they had it.

“Credit to them, they played really well in the first half, everything went right for them.

"We went into our shells a bit," he conceded of their first-half submission.

"But we didn't dig too much into the mindset of that (playing against Damien Hardwick), other than that it's the first game and the spotlight is on.

"I'm more proud of our response, because it could have been a really horrendous result in the end."

“It looked like a Richmond game in the second half.

“We flipped the script on territory, we scored from stoppage and our boys just played the way that we want to play.

“So, we’ll review the first half. Our boys are really honest . . . they’re not happy with the way that they started, and we’ll review that.”

“In the end, whether we win the game or whether we lose the game, we’re going to review the game really honestly . . .

“We’ve got a game in five days, and we’ve got to move on really quickly. So, we’ll learn from it and get ready for Carlton.”

Martin will likely return for Thursday's MCG blockbuster against Carlton while Lynch and Nankervis are a chance.

"It's going to make our team better, but Noah (Balta) into the ruck in second half, was terrific and he's going to have to do that anyway," Yze added.

“Sam Naismith, in his first game for the Club, he toiled away and fought hard.

“(Debutant) Seth Campbell could have kicked three or four (goals) today. Didn’t look out of place, which is good.

“Josh Gibcus, first game back for a long time, he’ll be better for the run as well.”

"Dusty going out, disappointing but we had to be smart with that decision and to have him back will be handy."

I don’t care how he spins it. 11 goals in a row against GC is stuffen embarrassing. They’ve never played finals.

We most likely win with Lynch, Nank and Dusty in the side.
But yeah, it would simply paper over the cracks.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Well to show a positive position is better than a spitting frothing wild man (like 75% OER’ites)

You don’t have to spit and froth to say it was unacceptable.

It would help if we weren’t playing KMac, Pickett and Grimes over Brown, Cumberland and even Miller. It feels like we are trying to hold on to something that is no longer there

Very well said ive been searching for ages for a way to say it.

To me its sad the club has to know where its at but cannot bring itself to be honest and make the calls that are needed.
Instead it spins away and all it does is make it worse because so many supporters lap up everything they say.

The so called negative posters here are not the problem we have been saying for years that things need to change but the club is simply hanging onto past glories.

Its the optimists who are not living in reality who are the problem. They continue to talk up the situation but inevitably the facts of the matter hit em in the face and they savagely turn.

Would also help if we had a young cotch, riewoldt, edwards, dusty the list goes on to be excited about.

Young Cotch, Dusty were taken at the pointy end of the draft. Young Gibcus is the Riewoldt equivalent for stage of the draft. Bolton for the Edwards stage.
We need to bottom out in order to pick up the Cotchin and Dusty types

Hard to draft Cotchin's and Dusty's when winning flags.

That's really precisely my belief, we need to bottom out. Last year was en epic failure and hardwick didnt help at all being a strong advocate to get Taranto and Hopper.
Fair enough to have a go at one more miracle season where everything goes right, but it didnt.

So now we must bottom out and play the kids and judging by the teams being picked it doesn't seem like the club has the same view.. unless this season is a farewell tour for grimes, pickett, mcintosh, graham, broad, prestia etc etc

Lol at all this even the most optimistic supporter has to understand that we are not winning a flag. They have to understand the bulk of players who carry the side are 30 plus and its down hill. They are blind if they cannot see the group under the top players and the majority of  our kids are not to a level where they will be able to pick up the slack.

Yet this debate rages on.

Another mid table finish  with all the mediocre hacks will just prolong the agony.
