'Good match-up': Tantalising Dusty-Harley duel on the cards

Richmond has made Harley Reid a focus ahead of the clash with West Coast this week, highlighting the first-year star's strengths in a video session

Harley Reid's eye-catching show of brute strength in just his fourth AFL game has Richmond superstar Dustin Martin and teammates on high alert ahead of their clash with West Coast.

No.1 draft pick Reid made fending off tackles his trademark throughout an outstanding junior career, drawing early comparisons with Martin.

And he brought that talent to the big league during Gather Round.

The 18-year-old Eagle's impressive display against Sydney at Mount Barker included 18 disposals, four clearances, seven tackles, six score involvements and two goal assists.

But it was his ability to brush off would-be tacklers that really stood out.

Reid shrugged a total of seven Swans opponents, including one in a passage of play that led to his first senior goal with a classy snap in the opening term.

The tally of seven broken tackles fell just one short of the all-time record held by Martin and North Melbourne's Luke Davies-Uniacke.

Richmond star Shai Bolton revealed Reid's powerful performance was highlighted in a video session at Punt Road this week in a preparation for Sunday's clash at Optus Stadium.

"You can see how strong he is - a lot of people compare him to Dusty (Martin)," Bolton said.

"It will be just good to play against him. I'll be on him in the midfield now and then, so we'll see how we go."

The prospect of Reid going head-to-head with Martin is a tantalising one.

"Dusty's just excited to play football and he just plays the way he wants to play, but he's obviously aware of (Reid's strength)," Bolton said.

"We've seen him play and we've watched vision today, but it would be a good match-up I reckon."

Bolton was asked how he would go about laying a tackle on Reid.

"I'll just have to duck under his arm," he said.

"Hopefully if I do tackle him he doesn't palm me, but we'll see how we go."

Bolton starred in a pair of comfortable Richmond wins over West Coast last year, picking up three Brownlow Medal votes in both rounds eight and 18.

The West Australian product also polled two votes against Fremantle on the Tigers' other trip to Perth in 2023.

He has been outstanding again this season and looms as a potential match-winner after dazzling with four goals in Richmond's narrow loss to St Kilda last week.

"It's just good to play in front of all my family and all the Richmond fans back in WA," Bolton said.

"That's the best thing about it - playing in front of family and friends."

An acquaintance from my gym , who I talk footy with offered me a free ticket to this game . He’s mad West Coast but knows I’m a tigers man .

Really looking forward to going despite my gut feeling it might be more competitive than recent battles .

Eagles ponder plan to stop Tigers livewire

By Nathan Schmook

Wwat Coast will take a plan for Richmond goalkicking star Shai Bolton into Sunday's clash at Optus Stadium, but coach Adam Simpson knows there are no guarantees of success when trying to combat the livewire Tiger.

Bolton, who kicked 5.6 across his two games against the Eagles last season, has kicked 11 goals this season and earned the maximum 10 coaches' votes for his game-breaking four-goal performance against St Kilda last Sunday at Norwood Oval.

Quelling the forward/midfield star shapes as a job for versatile West Coast defender Brady Hough, with Simpson working through options at the club's main training session at Optus Stadium on Thursday.

"I suspect every team has a plan, and he seems to get around it every week. He's done a lot of damage on us over the years, and we've got to put some work into him," Simpson said.

"He spends so much time up the ground as well, so that's where they get you. You think you've got them covered, and then they go on-ball for a bit and do some damage there.

THE CERTAINTIES - West Coast versus Richmond

Jack Makeham
SEN
13 April 2024

Brown collects 15+ disposals and 2+ rebound 50s

He mightn’t be particularly well-known around the league just yet, but young Tom Brown has been making waves at Tigerland this season.

The 20-year-old has drawn tremendous praise for his piercing boot, routinely nailing outrageous kicks with deadly accuracy coming out of the backline.

The clash against West Coast will mark just his fifth senior appearance, yet every time he steps on the park Adem Yze gives him more licence to take the game on.

Expect the bright prospect to have a career game against a West Coast side that can’t keep the ball out of their opponent’s hands.

McGovern for 25+ disposals, 4+ intercept possessions

We’ve backed Jeremy McGovern for a certainty in all bar one of West Coast’s games this season, reflecting the fact that he has essentially been the only reliable Eagle in 2024.

The star defender stands out amidst another season in the doldrums for West Coast, averaging 23.8 disposals per game and ranking 16th in the competition for intercepts.

Richmond have been far from efficient going inside 50 this season, sitting 15th in the comp, so there will undoubtedly be plenty of easy footy for McGovern to pick off.
