16 May 2024Matthew Lloyd says it's time for Richmond to move on from captain Toby Nankervis and find a new leader for the young side as they venture through a rebuild under coach Adem Yze.
It comes as the Tigers struggle with one of their worst starts to a season in recent memory, with a 1-8 record after nine rounds.
The 29-year-old Nankervis took over as sole captain at the start of 2024, after sharing the position with Dylan Grimes between 2022 and 2023.
But after their horror start under new coach Yze, Lloyd wants to see an on-field change.
"I think that the time has come for a new captain, with the way Toby's going with his football. He often gives away a lot of free kicks and things like that," Lloyd said on Nine's Footy Classified on Wednesday night.
"I feel like Liam Baker is the obvious (replacement as captain)."

But there could be one issue.
Baker may not be in the yellow and black come 2025, as rumours grow surrounding his eagerness to explore a trade back home to Western Australia, whether it be to the Eagles or the Dockers.
"You don't give the obvious to a player who is thinking of leaving. But after that, I couldn't name a player (who would be their next captain)," Lloyd said.
If he commits to the Tigers, Lloyd says there's simply no one else for the job.
"I think he's the next best fit," he said.
But if Baker does make the move home Jimmy Bartel has suggested a few others who could take over from Nankervis.
"Is it (Daniel) Rioli? Is it (Jack) Graham?" Bartel asked.
