Zebras dominate VFL TigersBy Richmond Media
19 May 2024Richmond VFL suffered a challenging defeat against Sandringham, with the Zebras securing a commanding 110-point victory at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday.
The Tigers, with only four AFL-listed players among them, started promisingly, kicking the opening goal in the first 90 seconds of the match.
Sandringham responded assertively by claiming the next three goals of the first term.
The pattern repeated in the second quarter, with Jacob Koschitzke notching the first major for Richmond, only to be countered by three consecutive goals from the opposition.
Although Koschitzke added another goal, Sandringham dominated the term, adding five goals to their scoreline.
Injuries continued to impact the Tigers in the first half, with AFL-listed player Sam Naismith leaving the ground due to a suspected ACL injury, followed by Austin Johnson's withdrawal after a heavy collision.
Sandringham increased their dominance in the second half, preventing Richmond from scoring and ultimately securing a resounding 110-point victory.
Despite the loss, Richmond's vice-captains Joel Garner and Chad Harris exhibited impressive performances.
Garner showcased solidity in the backline, accumulating 19 disposals and seven marks, earning him the Pat Cronin Medal as the Tigers' best on ground.
Harris contributed significantly with 21 touches, displaying consistent commitment and effort.
Kaleb Smith, unaffected by his travel from Brisbane as Richmond’s AFL emergency, delivered a standout performance at half-back, finishing the game with a team-high 22 disposals.
Jacob Koschitzke also looked lively throughout the match and displayed unwavering effort.
The match served as Pat's Match, supporting the Pat Cronin Foundation in their campaign against coward punches.
Looking ahead, Richmond VFL anticipates a special occasion as they face Essendon in the Dreamtime curtain raiser at the MCG next week.
