Gray has been re-signed for 2025
==============

"Gray, 21, joined the Club in May with the 16th pick in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

The 195cm utility booted 10 majors from VFL matches with the Club, including a best-on-ground performance against Carlton in Round 14.

Gray, who played local football just last year, had five marks and booted four goals in that display against the Blues before he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in the dying stages....

...“Campbell is a great character who has worked incredibly hard since joining our football program mid-year.

“His versatility gives our coaching staff plenty of options, and we look forward to him continuing to develop as a player in 2025."

Wonder if his number was deliberately made 50 to satisfy the Tiger pun on the app

Tigers see shades of Gray amid Balta curfew

There couldn't have been many more satisfying ways for Campbell Gray to begin his AFL debut than by plucking a one-handed intercept mark. But, for the 195cm Richmond defender, that was how a first game earned in bizarre circumstances began. Parachuted into the Tigers team due to it being a night game – and thus finishing beyond Noah Balta's 10pm curfew following his sentencing for assault earlier in the week – Gray was the sixth Richmond debutant in seven matches to begin the year. But he handled himself well on the Anzac Day Eve stage, giving another glimpse of Richmond's bright future before being substituted out of the game for Tom Brown just before three-quarter time.

Give him another go. As usual the newbie albeit having a quite game is subbed out when seniors were stinking it up.

I agree I don't think he should have been subbed and I don't think brown should have been the sub in the first place.

Gray did some nice things. Shattered he was subbed....maybe he was sore? Most likely structural. I would have pulled short out for brown though.

Gray’s eye-catching Dreamtime display

"He’s come in and he looks like he’s an AFL player, he’s ready to play."

By Tony Greenberg, Richmond Media

You wouldn’t have known it was just Campbell Gray’s second game of AFL football if you watched his performance for Richmond in the 2025 Dreamtime clash with Essendon.

Gray, who was recruited by the Tigers with their second pick (No. 16 overall) in last year’s mid-season draft from Essendon’s VFL team, shone under the MCG lights in his key defensive role, as a replacement for Noah Balta.

Showcasing elite closing speed to spoil opposition marking attempts, his own aerial and intercept ability (both in the air and at ground level), as well as cool composure, Gray was a major Yellow and Black positive on the night.

He finished the match with 11 disposals, six marks, three rebound-50s, six intercepts, a game-high 14 one-percenters and 157 metres gained.

Those 14 one-percenters were the most by a Tigers player since Tylar Young’s 15 against the Western Bulldogs in Round 4 of the 2023 season at the MCG.

Richmond coach Adem Yze acknowledged Gray’s efforts during his post-game press conference.

“Campbell Gray’s form down back today, like he did in the Melbourne game (his AFL debut in the Anzac Day Eve match), he’s come in and he looks like he’s an AFL player, he’s ready to play,” Yze said.

“We just thought that Campbell Gray’s second game of AFL footy, to put him in a role he’s played before, and that’s down back. He’s been in good form at VFL level.”

When Balta returns to the line-up, Gray has the versatility to play forward and provide a chop-out in the ruck with his impressive leap.

He was moved up forward in the last quarter of the clash with Essendon and has played there previously in the VFL.

“We just wanted to try something different with him. It might be something we need to look at when Noah is back,” Yze said.

“Right now, we feel like Campbell Gray deserves to be playing AFL footy. So, I reckon if I told him he was playing forward next week, he’ll take that.”

I worry he’s gonna be a reboot of Tyler Young

Unheralded: The players who deserve more credit for Round 11

By Andrew Slevison, Lachlan Geleit & Jaiden Sciberras
SEN
26 May 2025

50 shades of Gray

Promoted into the senior side in the absence of Noah Balta, Richmond’s Campbell Gray showed plenty of promise in the Tigers clash with Essendon.

Playing deep in the back half, Gray was prominent in battle with the talented Nate Caddy, holding the key forward to just one mark and one goal, collecting six marks and six intercepts of his own.

The 22-year-old has been resolute in his first two appearances at the top level, proving a shrewd mid-season selection out of Essendon's VFL side.
