Richmond v Hawthorn Preview

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
14 June 2024

This clash will be a huge celebration of one of the greatest Tigers of all time – Dustin Martin - who plays game 300.

And it’s come at a good time for the Tigers who have rallied to find some form after a disastrous start to the season, battling well in losses to Essendon and Geelong before knocking off the Crows in Adelaide.

The only thing though, is that Hawthorn has quickly become one of the most in-form sides in the competition, winning five of their last six. Their only loss in that patch came by one point to Port Adelaide, a game they should have won on all measures.

It won’t be easy for this Richmond side to stop the Hawthorn train, particularly in the middle as the Hawks have begun to motor in that area since the return of Will Day.

If the Tigers are to win, it won’t have to be just on the back of a defensive performance, given Tom Lynch is set to return to bring some forward line firepower alongside Martin and Shai Bolton.

While there’s no doubt the Tigers will be up for it to honour their legendary teammate, it’s simply too hard to pick against a Hawthorn side that’s in form… particularly against a side that’s still 17th on the ladder.

Tip: Hawthorn by 19 points.

Tigers’ burning question: How significant will the Milestone Martin factor be?

You sense it’ll be massive. Dustin Martin — one of the greatest players of the century and arguably the best finals performer the game has ever seen — on Saturday will play his 300th game in what is sure to be a landmark day with a massive crowd. The Tigers are languishing near the bottom of the ladder, but such is Martin’s popularity and standing that the Tigers will have a big emotional, even spiritual, boost on Saturday. The key for Richmond will be restricting Hawthorn’s offence as they’ve kicked 85 points or more in five of their six wins this season (they kicked 8.10 (58) in their other win … against St Kilda). Should the Tigers be strong defensively, they can ride an emotional, Dusty-inspired wave to victory.

Yep WP, it makes no sense especially with Prestia out and the Hawks being one of the top contested ball teams this year.

Cumberland on scrimshaw is a terrible matchup. I don't know how many scrimshaw has had but he's just killing Cumbo at the minute.  :help

With Cumberland being a forward, our coaches can’t really control that match up.

Quarter time

Richmond   2.3-15
Hawthorn   4.3-27

Goals: Martin, Taranto

They are just smashing us in the centre (and why McAuliffe should have started) as well as feeding off us rebounding with ease out of F50. Our small forwards and half-forwards have been useless.

Freak goal by Taranto btw.

Maybe the players should stop kicking it to him and focus kicking to leading forwards.
So lynch would have to lead sometimes.
