From what I've just heard on ABC radio, looks like it's an ACL.  That means 12 months out.

   

Will have scans tomorrow to confirm, but they seem fairly certain it's a long term injury.

Was it done when he initially stumbled or the second time in the goalsquare after he went back on? If he played on then it's like what happened to Lenny Hayes.

I think it was Dr. Brukner on the ABC who said that it was a classic ACL.  The player goes off injured and then seems ok once the pain decreases.  Suppose that means he did the injury the first time, but couldn't be sure on that.

Can't be the gruonds, as we never saw this many knees in the past.  Boots?

these are elite athletes who are asked to do the equivalent of multiple speed sprints and long distance running for 2 hours on a weekend. people forget the boys are actually people not robots. the faster the game gets, these things will happen. the dogs are suffering big time because of the way they play.

Richmond's season suffered a hammer blow on Sunday with star midfielder Mark Coughlan suffering a suspected ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The Tiger onballer limped off in the third minute of his side's 41-point loss to Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium in Launceston and, despite running the boundary and even going back onto the field momentarily, coach Terry Wallace suspected the worst after the match.

"We think it's an ACL, (but) we won't know until the tests are done tomorrow, but it looks likely that he'll be out for 12 months which makes it a very disappointing day obviously," Wallace said.

"He was tagged last week and played a pretty good game and he came off a 40-possession game over in Perth the week prior to that, so he was getting right back to his best footy.

"Some blokes in this competition seem to get a wretched run, while other blokes seem to get a blessed run and he's one of those players who just doesn't seem to have any luck about the way he goes about it."

Wallace was unable to pinpoint the exact play that caused the injury and was unsure why Coughlan was initially cleared to retake the field.

He said he would 'go through that with the medical staff'.

DIAGNOSIS
(KNEE) Coughlan sustained a severe injury to the right knee in an innocuous change of direction incident in the first quarter of yesterday's match.

DOC SAYS...
Coughlan will have further specialist assessment and scans in Melbourne today but Richmond is expecting the worst. He appears to have injured the ACL and is likely to require a full knee reconstruction, which will rule him out for the remainder of the 2006 season.

that can happen, with some acl, u feel ok, pass all tests, iirc another player earlier this yr played a whole game with an acl, lenny hayes, and it was only late at night he knew something was wrong

The club has revealed that the scans carried out on the hard-working onballer have delivered the worst possible news for Tiger fans.

coming from a stregnth  and conditioning backround the problem with afl players and fitness staff is that footy players do not do enough real heavy 1/4 squats to really stregnthen their knee joints. its not rocket science, any hard core stregnth and conditioning weightlifter wil tell you that!

1/4 squats should be compulsary in every training week!
