Never mind it was just a 6 minute burst -albeit an insane one- in an 80 point flogging as opposed to dragging your side from 7 goals down to win - but reckon Reid just gave them the excuse they were desperately hoping for to not give a Richmond player the Rising Star nomination this week. :shh

Ashcroft put his hand up too - in a close win. They'll love that. #anyonebutrichmond :shh :shh

It’s a comic book award - like the brownlow and the aa.
It’s not worth anything of note
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Richmond young gun Sam Lalor reveals touching moment behind Troy Selwood tribute

Richmond debutant Sam Lalor paid tribute to late mentor Troy Selwood with a classy gesture after the Tigers’ stunning win over Carlton on Thursday night.

Lalor, last year’s No.1 draft pick, made an instant impact in his debut, kicking two goals and having a hand in many more to help his side fight back from 41 points in a stunning upset.

The 18-year-old had a close relationship with Selwood, who sadly died last month.

Selwood had worked at Geelong Grammar School where Lalor was not only a star footy player, but also a very good cricket player.

The former Brisbane player even spoke to The Age about Lalor’s enormous potential just days before his death.

Lalor revealed after the match that he messaged Geelong champion Joel Selwood to ask if he could wear a black armband to honour Troy.

“I actually called him a couple of days ago and let him know that I would be wearing an armband for his brother Troy,” Lalor told Channel 7.

“He was an awesome mentor for me. I wouldn’t be here without him.

“Joel was pretty happy and emotional. He sent me a good luck message and, yeah, really proud to wear this and I’m happy I could do this.”

Lalor looked anything but a first-gamer with his efforts on the field and calmness during the post-match interview.

“I was pretty relaxed all week and even today I felt relaxed. Soon as I went out to the ground and soaked it all in, made the most of it. I just loved playing out there, it was electric, what a way to win,” he said.

While Lalor will dominate the headlines, skipper Toby Nankervis was immense in the ruck and veterans Nick Vlastuin and Jayden Short were rocks in defence.

But there was special praise reserved for forward Mansell, who kicked a crucial goal in the thrilling final quarter.

“He’s the type of player we want to play like as a forward pressure and that’s how we won the game,” he said.

“He drives that each day and we all feed off each other and to see what he did tonight, I’m so proud of him.”

The entire Tigers playing group also wore black armbands to honour late recruiter Chris Toce, who died last year.

Congrats Sam

Levi was a freebie for the Premiers though so his nomination will be held back to not annoy clubs like ours that never get free handouts

Tiger's time: No.1 pick goes from broken jaw to Rising Star nom

By Sarah Black

SAM LALOR only started eating solid food one day before his debut, as part of his recovery from a broken jaw.

It didn't affect his performance, awarded the Telstra AFL Rising Star nomination for his round one game against Carlton, recording 18 disposals, eight score involvements and two goals.

Lalor had suffered the injury in Richmond's match simulation against West Coast on February 17.

"I was told to take the surgery and potentially be right for round one, or if I don't, I'd be available in rounds five to six. So it was a pretty clear decision for me," Lalor told AFL.com.au.

"It was pretty tough. I couldn't eat for three and a bit weeks post-surgery, until I found out the day before the game that I was allowed to start eating again. I thought I wasn't going to be able to fuel myself for the game, but I figured some things out.

"Early days, it was pretty much a soup diet, yoghurt, a lot of protein shakes. As I could open my mouth a bit more, I had a bit of risotto. I lost a fair bit of muscle mass, but a fair bit of fat as well, so I trimmed down a bit, which wasn't the worst thing."

Lalor was still bouncing after Thursday night's come-from-behind victory over Carlton, the Tigers having chipped away at a 41-point deficit to eventually win by 13.

"I didn't know what to think after the game, but it's sunk in now, it was an unreal experience. I think everyone wants to play in that [round one] game, so I was jumping at the bit trying to get out there," he said.

"The crowd gives you the chills, it's like having another player out there, and makes everything easier when the crowd's behind you. The Tiger Army is so good at it, they're so loud, and we had it tough last year, so for them to still be with us is great.

"I don't reckon I got to bed till about four in the morning, I was just buzzing from the energy from the crowd and thinking about the win. It's hard to get to sleep when there's so much adrenaline running through you late at night, but I've caught up over the past few nights.

"I was watching Thor: Ragnarok, then tried to go to sleep; but I gave up, got back up and watched the rest of the movie."

Lalor – who had a group of 20 family members sitting together, along with countless friends scattered around the MCG – was one of three Tiger debutants on Thursday night, playing alongside Harry Armstrong and Luke Trainor.

Richmond brought in an astonishing eight draftees in November, with the crew set to form the nucleus of the side for years to come.

"We’ve formed a really good connection. We do a lot of things around the club together, and I can't wait for the future," he said.

"Three of us obviously played, but there's going to be so many more this year, and it's going to be so good when we're all playing together. I think we're going to be a very good side in the years to come."

Lalor spent the first seven weeks of pre-season living with veteran Nathan Broad, his wife Tayla and toddler Samara, but has since moved in with a host family.

"They're the best, I still go over and have dinner and see them. They were like older siblings to me, and I'm so grateful for what they did for me," he said.

"It was so good to be out there [playing] with 'Broady'. When I kicked my first goal, I remember seeing 'Broady' run from the backline and he just gave me a massive hug. It was super special, and I couldn't thank [the Broads] enough."

Richmond rising star Sam Lalor set to cash in after wardrobe malfunction during AFL debut

A big Aussie company is coming to the party after the first gamer’s X-rated act went viral.

Richmond star Jack Ross has revealed boom teenager Sam Lalor is in talks with Bonds after his unfortunate wardrobe malfunction last week.

Lalor, last year’s No.1 pick, made a brilliant debut in the stunning season-opening win over Carlton last week.

He picked up 22 touches, kicked two goals and a hand in many more as the Tigers fought back from 41 points down to seal a memorable win.

But when celebrating his second goal, cameras picked up an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction with Lalor’s penis slipping out of his shorts.

The 18-year-old appeared to be fully aware of the incident when he posted on social media after the game, dropping the eggplant emoji after his comment.

“What a night. Thanks Richmond for the opportunity, keen for many more to come.🍆” he wrote.

Teammate Tim Taranto tagged Bonds Australia in the post and it appears the iconic brand have reached out.

“I won’t comment too much, but Bonds messaged him and they are going to tee up a deal,” Ross told Triple M on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lalor won’t say he sees much of Dustin Martin in himself, believing he can’t yet hold a candle to the Richmond great.

Comparisons to the retired AFL superstar has followed the No.1 draft pick Lalor from country Victoria to his arrival at Punt Road.

And the hype has only grown after the Bacchus Marsh teenager hit the scene with a dazzling performance.

The similarities between Martin and his heir apparent were striking at the MCG, with a buzz cut-sporting Lalor fending off the Blues to kick two goals.

He had overcome a fractured jaw and a concussion in four weeks to make his first-round debut.

But Lalor, earning a Rising Star nomination for his eye-catching display, can’t say he sees the resemblance.

“Well, if I could be half as good a player as he was, I’d be pretty happy,” Lalor said on Tuesday.

“But no, I don’t see too many similarities. I try to play a bit like him.

“No one in the club has said anything, so that’s all I care about really.”

Lalor won’t lean into the hype around potentially wearing the No.4 guernsey made famous by Martin either.

The number was shelved this season to honour the legendary midfielder, with Lalor handed the No.22 shirt.

“You’ve got to earn your stripes and you’ve got to deserve the number,” Lalor said.

“If it happens in the next few years or whatever, I’d happily take it, but for now I’m happy with 22.”

Richmond will aim to sustain their early momentum when they play Port Adelaide away on Saturday.

“We know there’s going to be bumps in the road this year, but we’ll take it step by step,” Lalor said.

“We’ve already got some plans in place for Port and we’re training hard throughout the week, so we’re happy to go into the first interstate game of the year and hopefully we can beat them.”
