HARRY ARMSTRONG

Position: Tall forward

Size: 193cm

Clubs: Sandringham Dragons/Ormond

AFL player comparison: Jeremy Cameron

Armstrong has come with a rush in 2024, with AFL clubs quickly falling in love with the gun goalkicker. Despite playing just three games for Vic Metro, Armstrong kicked an equal champs-high nine goals — including five in the final against Vic Country — as he showed off his accurate and penetrating left-foot kick, competitiveness in the air and mobility around the ground. Armstrong then took that form back to the Dragons, kicking five four-goal hauls in his final eight matches to finish with 27.10 for the Coates Talent League season. He’s also been dominant at APS level under Matthew Lloyd for Haileybury College across the past two years, including kicking 10 of his side’s 22 goals in a game earlier in the year.

That ought to make a few happy. He’s the shock of this draft imo.

Thought he was too 10 potential.. maybe didn’t interview well? Now we have 3 keys in Fau, Trainor and Armstrong. Add Smillie to that too basically.

We’ve covered most bases so far

Thought there was no way we would get Trainor, Armstrong and Faull whilst also getting Lalor and Smillie. Hittin was a wild card but I like the pick. Absolutely crazy draft haul.

Crazy he slid so far. He kicked ~70 goals this year. Our replacement for Jack.

Only explanation for the slide is the clubs between our two batches of picks (12,14 -> 21,23) weren't in need of key forwards. Taking Faull & Hotton early would've thrown other clubs too.

More excited than I would've been if we hadn't picked Faull as well - contrasting styles should complement each other well. :shh

Richmond selects Harry Armstrong

Richmond has selected tall forward Harry Armstrong with selection No. 23 overall at tonight’s Telstra AFL Draft.

Armstrong is a highly rated 195cm forward from Sandringham Dragons and Victoria Metro via Ormond.

The left-footer played a starring role at all levels of football this year, booting 60 majors across 19 games.

Armstrong was prolific through the National Championships, booting nine goals across three games, which included a five-goal haul against Vic Country in the title deciding match, cementing his place in the U/18 All Australian team.

The 18-year-old was also selected in this year’s Coates Talent League team of the year and was seventh in the National Combines agility testing, an outstanding result for a player of his height.

Armstrong kicked four goal hauls in five of his 10 matches for the Dragons this season, including in the Grand Final win against GWV Rebels.

Richmond Recruiting Officer, Sam Cousens said that Armstrong had hit the ground running in 2024 after he missed portions of 2023 through injury.

“Harry is a dynamic player with terrific aerial power,” he added.

“He is a reliable set shot and is a player who has kicked goals everywhere he has played, particularly at Haileybury but also for Sandringham and Vic Metro.

“His hands are elite, and he has stood out to us with his ability to be a dominant forward with his presence, all year. We view Harry as a player with significant upside and we are excited to welcome him and his family to Tigerland.”

Armstrong’s long kicking, burst of speed and strong hands make him a player that can excite the Tiger Army for many years to come.

The key forward will join his Sandringham Dragons teammates Taj Hotton and Luke Trainor at the Club next year, who were selected earlier at pick No. 12 and 21, respectively.
