Very sad about North trading their pick for next year to us, having a little tantrum

Richmond will hopefully soon stop patting itself on the back over the decisions it made to off-load in-contract star players in return for access to a heap of high-end kids in the national draft. And now that the teenage talent in those kids has been identified, the senior development phase must begin immediately.

Not sure the Club's been patting itself on the back...think that's more the media of which Barrett is a member

Is he seriously suggesting that all draftees should play round 1? Even the ones who will start in the rehab group?

Funny stuff indeed

Surprised he is allowed to write that in the afl website. Poor form indeed

He’s called purple for a reason….
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

The biggest shock is, given his track record, that the AFL still employs him. Surely the industry isn't that poor that they can't find anyone better? Then again, they call McClure a newsbreaker so maybe it is....

Breaking down every club’s selections in the 2024 AFL Draft

By Nathan Sepe
SEN
26 Nov 2024

Richmond walked away with their next generation of potential stars, whilst the Roos went risky in their approach, trading a future first-round pick.

A generational draft class we’ll look back on in years to come. The Tigers had an interesting strategy that brought in terrific talent but did leave some questions that might not be answered for a few more years.

Lalor and Smillie as a one-two combo in the midfield is brilliant drafting, and the more time goes on, Smillie will probably be the one that we’ll laugh at for going so low. The immediate question is on the speed in their midfield, but that will most likely be targeted in future drafts.

Taking three talls in Faull, Armstrong and Sims is an interesting choice, but Faull and Armstrong would be a great combination given their differences in strengths, with Faull able to push outside 50 and impact marking contests, whereas Armstrong doesn’t venture too far outside 50 and out-bodies inside 50 to take marks. Sims will only make sense if the Tigers see him as a predominant ruck, but he’s proven he can be a dangerous marking forward option.

Hotton and Trainor pose the biggest injury risk out of Richmond’s haul, with Hotton recovering from an ACL, which given his game style of athletic showings and high rises, is a slight concern, but still early days. Trainor has dealt with concussions throughout his junior career which will have to be managed carefully.

The Tigers trading for Alger was the best call of the night, with the marking small forward a great addition to a revamped forward line the Tigers will be building. Overall, it will be generational for good or worse, but if even four of these players come good, it’s a win.

Overall very happy with our draft.

My preference would have been 1 extra top end mid rather then the third tall in Sims.

I know I’ve been told otherwise, but can’t shake the feeling that we could have taken Allen/Reid at pick 14 and still ended up with Faull, Trainor and Armstrong with our next 3 picks while still doing that deal with the Kangas that gave us their 2025 1st rounder. I mean 3 of the first 4 key forwards taken in the draft were all picked by us and the 4th taken by the kangas was using the pick we traded them lol

Lalor, Smillie, Hotten, Allen/Reid, Faull, Trainer, Armstrong, Alger + Norths F1 is a better balance imo. Anyway all speculation. Club knows hell of a lot more then we and maybe caught wind that Faull would have been taken before P21.

Cal Twomey on Gettable mentioned that there was a lot interest in Taj Hotton and Jonty Faull from clubs between picks 14 & 21.

Also said Richmond didn't want to take the risk of Sydney trading up to get Jonty Faull so took him at pick 14. Rated him the no 1 KPF in the draft.

Might turn out a battler like a Luke McGuane. Or a beast like lynch, John Brown.

Nice risk to take to bring in a competitive chf type. Sounds like a least a few clubs had him as the best tall. Perhaps outside of Tauru.

Getting Armstrong late was lovely.

The rumour of Sydney would have taken Faull if we didn’t is a bit hard to believe for me. Not saying they didn’t rate him as the best kpf in the draft because obviously we did too given we took him first. But, they then had picks 22 & 26 where they could have taken any other key position forward in Armstrong, the Whitlock brothers, Shanahan or Sims and they took a couple of small/medium forwards instead. Like how much higher could they have believably rated Faull above every other key forward in the draft if they didn’t use their next 2 picks to take any of them? I remember when the swans took that fella with pick 26 fox footy had him ranked as a pick in the 90s.

Anyway excited to see all the cubs play. Hopefully Faull and Armstrong line up round 1.

Maybe they didn't rate Shanahan and Whitlock x2? They seem to be different type of player too.  If you like a certain guy, you don't have to automatically take the next best of his position when he goes off the board.

Give those 3 slid so deep it's believable for mine.

I don't mind Armstrong. Sims. Faull playing vfl for a while. Competition for places should be good for the club with lynch. Lefeu. Bauer. Even fawcett.

Lynch will get injured, LeFau out until May, time for Faucet  to see what he has got, IIRC  he is a big boy @ 195 and fairly agile ??? …

Callum Twomey doubling down Sydney wanted Faull early, in his article on afl.com

Seems to have good knowledge of the trades offered that didn't get accepted and the teams draft boards/rankings.

Also says swans also wanted Trainor

Norf offered two future 2nds (our back and theirs) for the Sims pick. To get the other Whitlock
