Hotton the one I don't know much about. Hope he's not the next Sonsie flop.

1 Nitpick I have, of course hindsight is 20-20, but maybe we pulled the trigger too soon with our picks 12 & 14.

Hotten looks like he would have been snapped up before our next pick so fair enough there. However can’t help but feel we could have gotten another of the top midfield prospects in Allen or Reid with 14 and still have been able to draft 2 of Faull, Armstrong, Shanahan or the Whitlock brothers given they were all still available at our next pick and we still have 1 left first up tomorrow. Allen in particular I feel would have complimented our other mid picks, given he’s defensively minded as opposed to the more forward minded Hotton and Lalor.

Take that with a grain of salt as I’ll be the 1st to admit I know diddly squat other than what I read from posters on here/media articles/short highlight clips.

We got 3 top end mids (2 of them being very capable up forward), 2 key position forwards, a key defender + the icing on the cake with norths first pick next year.

Bare in mind Pick 1 next year will be a mid.

Lalor
Smillie
McAullife
Round off defensive mid future to compliment Taranto and Hopper.

Outside mids we need so expect next year's draft to focus on that especially with our Pick 1 and NM 1st rounder.

We have our 2 key backs in Gibcus and Trainor. 2 key forwards in Faull and Armstrong.

Free Agency a ruckman and our next dynasty is just around the corner.

Trainor the only pick I'm not a fan of , the line for that shyte is way too fine, particularly nowadays and the consequences for the player & the club are potentially severe- one tall too many for mine in a midfielder's draft, don't really rate Smillie either - too many glaring flaws but he also has tools so Ill give him the benefit of the doubt, has shown he can at least get the ball which RCD never did. Big ticks for the other 4 picks. Not getting FOS is a disappointment but not unexpected, Hannaford the one I'm probably the most annoyed about missing out on, though hardly devestated.... Lindsay or Reid's foot skills would've been handy too - especially given Yze's comments regarding foot skills.  :shh

Looks like a good draft to me for the Tiges but anybody else notice how few Aboriginals were drafted? Did the Ku Klux Klan suddenly take over the AFL?( That's a joke for those who don't get it, obviously non white kids were taken)

And they reckon only 2 will be drafted and the first night was like wow yeah it's true. Maybe tonight will change things

Why Richmond’s huge draft intake could be “one of the smartest moves in AFL history”

By Lachlan Geleit
SEN
21 Nov 2024

SEN host Dwayne Russell was a huge fan of Richmond’s start to the 2024 AFL Draft.

The Tigers entered night one of the draft armed with seven picks inside the first round and ended up using six of them after getting full value for trading out Daniel Rioli, Liam Baker and Shai Bolton this off-season.

That last selection which turned out to be 27, was traded alongside a future second-rounder in exchange for North Melbourne’s future first-round pick.

Sam Lalor was the first player taken by the Tigers at pick 1, while Josh Smillie joined him inside the top 10 at pick 7.

The four other picks inside the first round were midfielder Taj Hotton (pick 12), tall forward Jonty Faull (pick 14), tall defender Luke Trainor (pick 21) and another forward target Harry Armstrong (pick 23).

As well as bringing in a glut of talent, Russell thinks Richmond were smart in picking Victorians that are already familiar with each other as Lalor and Faull hail from the GWV Rebels, while Hotton, Trainor and Armstrong played together at the Sandringham Dragons. Smillie also played with those Dragons draftees for Vic Country.

While we’ve seen clubs in the past also have a glut of first-round picks in Gold Coast and GWS, we’ve never seen a big established club have such access to a draft and Russell expects this intake to one day help deliver Richmond a flag.

“No actual football club with strength and culture in a football state has had six picks in the first round of a draft,” Russell said on SEN Afternoons.

“The Gold Coast and the Giants were expansion franchises just starting up in non-football states with poor facilities and no culture yet, and they had that run of picks.

“So, if I had to pick one or the other - will or won't Richmond win a flag in the next 10 years with this group of kids, most of whom know each other because they're Victorians? I would say yes.

“This might be one of the smartest moves in AFL history.”
