Sub 6: The combine numbers propelling running specialist's draft stock

By SEN
5 Nov 2025

Oakleigh Chargers’ draft prospect Sam Grlj set the AFL draft combine alight, solidifying his case for a top selection in the upcoming National Draft.

Finishing second in the 2km time trial with a 5:59 and top 10 in the 20m sprint, Grlj has the talent and athletic profile to slot into AFL football from Round 1. Known for his line-breaking abilities, the 18-year-old’s explosive nature and natural confidence renders him unstoppable at full flight.

But beyond his elite running capabilities, Grlj’s mentality and aggressive style of play holds him amongst the top prospects, modelling his game on a star of the competition.

“I try to base my game around Zak Butters,” Grlj told SEN Breakfast.

“(We have) similar size and similar athletic abilities and attributes. His speed and aggression that he plays with is something I try to model my game on. I like to play with a little bit of aggression – it definitely suits the way I play, and I really enjoy that side of the game.”

Given his stellar dash and gut-running, Grlj presents as an ideal prospect off the half-back flank, perfectly moulded to the run-and-carry of the modern game.

Attracting interviews with 16 clubs at the combine, the talent couldn’t quite get a read for which AFL clubs have him atop their draft boards, however Grlj could be selected as early as Pick 6.

“They keep (their cards) pretty close to their chest,” he said.

“It’s definitely hard to get a read, even talking to people close to me and around me who have experience going through this path – they don’t even know.

“For me, I’m just trying to focus on my studies for now, do a bit of training and really try to switch off from footy because it can be consuming sometimes.”

Grlj’s draft prospects were significantly boosted by his terrific showing with Richmond’s VFL set up, playing two games for an average of 17 disposals and four tackles.

“It was awesome,” Grlj said of the experience with the Tigers.

“It was great, after champs to go into that environment was unreal and the guys down there are awesome. Joel Garner and Liam George (VFL leadership) – they are really good guys, and they really showed me the culture and what it’s like.

“I really enjoyed it and was able to play some good footy off the back of that.”

With just two weeks until the National Draft, Grlj – as well as several other draft prospects – expressed his belief that the best player available for selection is Gippsland star Willem Duursma.

“Willem Duursma – probably have to give him the credits. I played against him at Vic Country, and he was unreal that day, played really well.

“He can play everywhere, can play all three positions and plays them all really well. That versatility is something that is unbelievable for him.”

Latest episode of gettable:
https://youtu.be/QHGWTg2lhPs?si=BgNZNhuKDwmrD9HJ

Key points when it comes to Richmond:
- doesn’t think any club will give us a good enough offer to trade either of our first picks.
- Sees Robey as a similar profile to Lalor but that they would compliment each other. Smillie a different type to them both
- Ranks and expects Grlj to be taken somewhere in the 10-15 range. If we were drafting for need we would take him as he is very quick and athletic, however clubs won’t generally draft for need ahead of talent with such an early pick.
- No garauntee to take Kellaway with pick 38 if there’s still someone on the board we rank a lot higher. Potential that he may slide to the rookie draft.

Feel like it’s the 1st time he’s changed the narrative to us just taking best available talent at our picks rather than a need i.e. Grlj.

4:40 - Are the Tigers best served splitting pick 4 & taking Grlj later?

6:27 - Is Robey two similar for Tigers after Lalor & Smillie?

14:08 - Does Richmond take Louis Kellaway with pick 38?

No Schubert is interesting.

My own phantom draft for those interested:

Pick 1: Willem Duursma: Eagles
Personally, the Duursmas have burnt me enough and I find it hard to really warm to Willem at Pick 1, but there is enough noise and he has a great profile. So did his brothers. Will they be a Morton family and all be average or will Willem be a Joel Selwood of the family? Eagles wont bid on academy players, they'll want their player to be "Pick 1".

Pick 2: Uwland - GC tied

Pick 3: Annable - Lions tied (Can see Eagles bidding on both and giving themselves time to trade Pick 2 for anyone interested, possible Dons for CDT. But Dons won't swap enough cause they are so hard to trade with)

Pick 4: CDT: Eagles - They need talls, they need a ruck, they need another forward. I can't see CDT not going to Eagles with the profile of their list and what they need.

Pick 5: Grlj: Tigers - It's just the type we need for our build. Also think it gives us more time to see what Essendon will give up for Robey.

Pick 6: Dean Blues tied (Bity of rivalry making the Blues pay up big time for Dean. They are in need of a good story with Curnow going, no way they pass on Dean)

Pick 7: Robey: Tigers - (Personally would love Essendon to have a mare and give up Pick 7 and 8 for Pick 6 and something. But Essendon aren't stupid like Roos, they are stubbornly stupid)

Pick 8: Sharp: Dons (Gun, Essendon have done well with Sharp at pick 8)

Pick 9: Taylor: Essendon

Pick 10: Schubert: Demons

Pick 11: Cumming: Demons
Go Tigers!

Take Sharp over Robey. His credentials far outweigh Robey’s.
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”
