Richmond's Team of the 21st Century (afl site)
« on: February 06, 2025, 10:57:05 PM »
AFL.com.au’s reporters have selected every club’s Team of This Century:

Unsurprisingly, Richmond's team is heavily back-ended, with an additional smattering of stars from the early 2000s, while the lost decade in the middle is barely a blip.

The backline is stacked, with Rance beating Darren Gaspar for the full-back spot, and Andrew Kellaway and Nathan Broad missing out.

There's a little fudging on the wings, with noted runners and rebounders Newman and Deledio squashed in, and Tasmanian's finest in Richardson and Riewoldt rule the forward line.

Ivan Maric was next in line for a ruck spot, Nathan Brown was squeezed out by Bolton and sub Rioli, while Shane Tuck and Shaun Grigg were next in for the mids.

Matthew Knights played three seasons in the 21st century, making it difficult to include him, with Brendon Gale (two) in the same category.

The injury-hit Mark Coughlan – who polled 16 Brownlow votes in just his third season, six behind the winners – is the biggest "what could have been" Tiger of the last 25 years.

You overate Tuck and underrate Gaspar IMO

Someone had to make way for Broad and it wasn't going to be Rance, Astbury, Grimes or even Bowden as much as he annoyed me over the years, his best was better than Gaspar's. Tuck for all his flaws was the best extractor we've had this century until Taranto who hasn't been at the club long enough. Either way I'd take him every day of the week over Captain Wrong Way & soft unaccountable stat padders like Wankable & Newman - now they were overrated. :shh

Gaspar was a multiple all Australian and best stopper in the entire comp at one stage

I just reckon he’s grossly underrated and had the length of the Flemington straight on Astbury

Maybe that’s just me , but I’m a big wrap for him

Play Richo on the wing for team balance.

I wouldn't have Ottens in that side

Agreed. Astbury a good player but yeah, defensively he has nothing on Gas.

I'd be dropping Astbury, Newman and Campbell from that side if I were picking them to go out and play a game.

Ottens straight into the ruck... :shh

Nankervis out for Stafford if we want a big man who could actually hurt people properly... :shh :shh

Yeah I'll take the blokes who actually stood up in finals over the blokes that barely gave a yelp when it most mattered and battled to get us all the way to ninth....that's why Astbury gets the nod...maybe swap out Bowden for Gaspar instead and Joel can go play kick to kick with his brother..... :shh :shh :shh

Would also swap Stafford for Ottens not Nank - Ottens only really hit his straps as a ruckman with Geelong , with us his best was up forward but he ain't playing there ahead of Jack, Lynch & Richo... :shh

Gaspar didn’t stand up in finals?

2001 when he was possibly the best full back in the comp, how’d he go in the finals ?

Against Brisbane in the prelim, Bradshaw had three disposals and one goal .. Gaspar stood up, plenty of others (including a few of your correct omissions) most definitely didn’t.

Like he said he can take Bowden's place- still  going with the bloke with 3 medals who embarrassed Walker , completely shut down Finlayson and kept Hawkins to one goal. :shh

EDIT: In fact I believe Balta was still on Hawkins when he kicked that goal so Astbury actually kept him goalless. :shh :shh
