Wallace on 3AW
« on: June 25, 2006, 03:23:22 PM »
* Want to get and redeem ourselves ourselves after the Hawks games. The bye puts that off for an extra week.

* Today a chance for guys to put their hand up for the Pies game.

* Left the guys in no uncertain terms that there'll be changes as the Hawks game was unacceptable. Didn't show them respect. Could be up to half a dozen.

* We haven't been able to get our best 22 on the park since he's been there - Browny, Thursfield, Cogs, Richo, Thursfield, Rodan, etc... The Bulldogs though have had worst luck wioth injuries.

* Schulz comes into calculation. Depends on match-ups if we go tall or small. Will Clement go to  Browny again or a tall.

* Cogs injury means opportunity for others. Mentioned a chance for Howat, Rodan and the other midfielders.

* Terry said picking up Aker isn't the path we'd go down. He's contracted so that means we'd have to give up early picks which is the opposite of what we're doing. Not to mention the financial considerations.

* Promise a committed effort next week. Impressed by the Pies and their run. Most Magpies are in form.

If Wallace believes that Rodan is in his best 22 he may as well resign today coz we're stuffed.

Here's the Sportal article on what Wallace said on 3aw today:

Schulz in line for return

Ben Wise
Sportal for afl.com.au

After going through what he described as a 'long week', Richmond coach Terry Wallace remains adamant that the Tigers will make changes for their clash with Collingwood at the MCG next Sunday.

Wallace said that he made it clear to his side in 'no uncertain terms' that players will be dropped after the disappointing loss to Hawthorn in Launceston last week.

And he has mooted that key forward Jay Schulz may be given a call-up after booting six goals in a best-on-ground performance with the Coburg Tigers in their win over Box Hill on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who signed a new deal with Richmond in March tying him to the club until the end of 2008, has managed just two senior games this year after injuring his collarbone in round two.

"Schulz is doing a very good job, he will come into calculations for selection this week," Wallace said.

"It will depend on the match committee in how we decide to set up against the Collingwood side - do we go taller or smaller?

"What's the likely match-up for (Pies defender) James Clement, will he go to a taller option if we play a taller forward option or will he go to Nathan Brown as he has in the past?"

Wallace attended Collingwood's win against Sydney on Saturday night and said that he was impressed with how Mick Malthouse's side was able to force the Swans into playing a game that was out of their comfort zone.

"I was in Sydney and I thought Collingwood played terrific footy," Wallace said. "They ran Sydney - Sydney wanted to play that chip and hold game that we are so used to them playing - but Collingwood just ran them off their legs and were very impressive."

With that in mind, Wallace knows that the Tigers' work will be cut out for them against the third-placed Magpies, and Richmond's task is made even more difficult with the absence of star midfielder Mark Coughlan - who suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Hawks.

When quizzed about possible replacements, Wallace admitted that there is nothing close to a straight replacement for Coughlan, and also said that how a club deals with injuries to key players separates finalists from also-rans.

"The (midfielders at Coburg) play different style of game. They are running players whereas Mark's a real in-and-under type for us and will be difficult to replace," he told 3AW.

"The art of any good side is what you've got next level down and we see the better sides can replace injured players and those that can't need to learn how to.

"Since I have been at Richmond we just haven't had a run where we've been able to get all our blokes on the ground at the one time.

"David Rodan was in fantastic form last summer and then did his knee, we lost Browny with the leg last year and Schulz was virtually lost to us last year with a couple of major injuries."

On the plus side for Richmond, spearhead Matthew Richardson will make his return against the Pies, and should Wallace opt for Schulz in his final line-up, Malthouse faces the task of having to curtail three tall forwards if Greg Stafford retains his place in the side - though this is hardly assured given his poor return of seven disposals, four marks and no goals against Hawthorn.
