What it means

Richmond (1-2) has come crashing back to earth after its round one heroics with a pair of chastening defeats by an average of 77 points. The Tigers might have already been handed a couple of reality checks but will now have to at least aim to limit the damage against the reigning premiers while giving their young talents time to learn from some of the best.

Brisbane (3-0) has won its past two clashes with Richmond by an average of 100 points and another thumping would hardly be a surprise this time around. The Lions have somehow flown under the radar even while starting their premiership defence with three consecutive victories and in ominous signs are closer to hitting top gear just as they host last year’s wooden spooner.

Game shapers

Jayden Short remains as one of a dwindling number of premiership winners still playing at Richmond as he turns his focus to helping to lead by example. The 29-year-old adds a touch of class to the Tigers’ defence while also finding himself in more contests around the middle of the field these days and aiming to deliver quality ball into attack for the young forwards to feast on.

Will Ashcroft had made a relatively slow start to the season after being awarded the Norm Smith Medal last year but his performance in the win over Geelong last week was worth the wait. The 20-year-old had 33 disposals in what coach Chris Fagan said was a superior display to his effort in the Lions' Grand Final triumph but in ominous signs his best is surely still to come.

Yze, Tigers embrace Lions challenge

Richmond coach Adem Yze says the perfect challenge against reigning premiers Brisbane awaits in Round 4.

Richmond coach Adem Yze can’t wait to see the young Tigers embrace the challenge of facing the reigning premiers on Saturday afternoon.

Richmond returns home to the MCG this weekend to host the undefeated Brisbane Lions, providing a brilliant opportunity for the Tigers’ youngsters to test themselves against the best the competition has to offer.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Yze said he had “no doubt” his players will welcome the obstacle Brisbane presents.

“They’re a good team for a reason and they won the premiership for a reason,” Yze said.

“The opportunity for Harry Armstrong to play on Harris Andrews, Sammy Lalor to be leaning on Lachie Neale, Luke Trainor to play on some of their key forwards and gun forwards … it’s just a great opportunity for some of our players.

“We want them to feel like they belong on an AFL field, and we are trying to really fast track that. What better way to do it against the best team in the comp at the ‘G in front of our Tiger Army? We can’t wait.”

After a resounding Round 1 victory over Carlton, the Tigers have suffered defeats to Port Adelaide and St Kilda, with Yze searching for a consistent four-quarter performance on Saturday at the MCG.

“We got to start to become a team that can play consistent footy over four quarters,” Yze said.

“Being a young team that might be harder, and it might take us a bit of time, but hopefully this week against a really strong team, we can have a really consistent performance over four quarters.”

Tigers’ burning question: Can they prevent another blowout?

Since their Round 1 boilover win against Carlton, it’s been a pretty disappointing fortnight for the Tigers, who have shown great effort in spurts but were largely completely outclassed by Port Adelaide and St Kilda in Rounds 2 and 3 respectively. Richmond allowed the Power 180 more disposals; the biggest disposal differential on record. The, against the Saints, Yze’s men surrendered a whopping 21 marks inside 50 — St Kilda’s second-best return in seven years — amid a 14-goal second half. Granted, this is largely a young and inexperienced group of players, and not much was expected of them heading into the year — but they’ve shown already this year they can commit themselves to a match-winning extent. And while their second win is highly unlikely to come against the reigning premiers this Saturday, a better sustained effort must be exhibited.

After a dream start to 2025 when knocking off Carlton, the season has turned very quickly for the Tigers. A 72-point loss to Port Adelaide preceded an 82-point drubbing at the hands of St Kilda last Saturday.

Adem Yze’s side trailed by eight points at half-time before they were obliterated by a 14-goal Saints onslaught, the Tigers kicking just two themselves. The Rhyan Mansell drama is now behind them and the unenviable task of a 3-0 Lions back at the MCG is next on the agenda.

The reigning premiers have already had plenty to deal with in the early stages of their title defence. They’ve handled a postponed fixture, key in-game injuries and found themselves behind at half-time in each of their three triumphs. Last weekend’s comeback win over Geelong was courageous, kicking seven goals to two in the second half to get up by nine points. They’ve had three stern tests so far, now they get a struggling Tigers at the scene of their greatest recent accomplishment.

The Lions have plenty of players in form, highlighted by Hugh McCluggage, Will Ashcroft, Josh Dunkley, Harris Andrews and Dayne Zorko. On the opposite end, Toby Nankervis has been flying the flag for Richmond, and the captain needs help. Yze’s Tigers were competitive for a half against the Saints and they’ll need a lot more to go toe-to-toe with Chris Fagan’s Lions. It might be a contest early but the cream should rise to the top.

Prediction: Brisbane by 54 points.
