Amazed there isn’t a bunch of people blaming Hopper for our result today

The night is still young

Was the main reason we lost. :shh

AFL Report Card - Round 4

Will Faulkner, Ben Cotton, Ben Waterworth
Foxsports
7 April 2025

RICHMOND

Tigers fans would’ve liked what they saw at the MCG against the reigning premiers, putting up 90 points on of the best defensive teams in the league. All the Richmond faithful could’ve hoped to see was effort, and it got it in spades. Adem Yze’s young side never stopped trying with grit and fight all game amid promising signs from several youngsters including five multiple goalkickers. There’s no real moral wins in footy, but they’d be feeling better about where they’re going after the weekend.

In the votes

Sam Lalor probably topped his Round 1 performance with 24 touches and two goals including a game-high 10 score involvements. Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto battled hard in the midfield, combining for 61 disposals, 27 contested possessions and 14 clearances.

Room for improvement

The Tigers had a real crack but just didn’t have the same polish or class as Brisbane. Kamdyn McIntosh played a loose run-with role on Lachie Neale, but Richmond ultimately didn’t have enough starpower to match Brisbane’s loaded and experienced midfield.

Grade

What a strange thing to say, a bloke who got a 7 year contract, on good money and meant to be a leader of this club gets his first coaches votes of the year, less votes than an 18 year old, and you think this defends his play this year ?

I think he’s been very good this year
And yep, I’ll defend

Will be very close to leading the best and fairest at the moment

20+ disposals every game, plenty of clearances and busting his arse

If his body holds up and he gets a solid run at it, he will be great as a big bodied mid protecting the kids

I think he gets a rough go on the forum. Not his fault he got offered 7 years on big coin.

Good luck to him

If he stays healthy he certainly serves a purpose, but that purpose is basically to take the blows for the younger mids coming through and to protect them and let them ease into full time midfield roles. I think there are cheaper mids who could do the same thing, again not his fault we recruited him and at the time I thought we may as well go for another flag and it just didn’t work out.

If hopper is still playing more than 50% in the midfield in 2 years time I’d be really worried and peeed off to be honest. Problem is, I don’t think he can serve much purpose playing any other position

I can't see a haul of draftees being the full time midfield at 20 years of age with about 30 games each to their names.

Guys like Hopper and Taranto will be necessary for at least 3+ years, at which point they'll be 5+ years into their 7 year contracts.

Also their wages aren't that big IMO. Above average at 700ish for Taranto sure but not like the 800-900+ you see guys like Perryman getting traded for.

I’m not saying they won’t have a place, I’m saying they won’t have the priority anymore, atleast they shouldn’t. If they’re playing less than 50% midfield, which they should be at that stage imo, then I don’t see where else they can have an impact. I see it as a very similar situation to Mitchell and omeara at the hawks.
