Did you feel the same way when on the back of a flag in 2017 and a prelim in 2018 when we picked up Tom Lynch as a free agent?

Tom Lynch’s reported contract when he joined Richmond as a FA: 7 year, 6.5 mil at an average of approx. 900k a year.

Oscar Allen’s reported contract when he joined Brisbane as a FA: 6 year, 5.4 mil at an average of approx. 900k a year.

Both were club captains within the top earners at their former clubs. Both earned their former clubs band 1 compensation which is a pick immediately following their first pick in the draft.

If you want some other examples:
Lance Franklin: 9 year, 10mil contract at approx. 1.1mil a year.
Joe Daniher: 3 year, 2.5mil contract at approx. 830k a year.
Zac Williams: 6 year, 5.4mil contract at approx. 900k a year.
Ben McKay: 6 year, 5mil contract at approx. 833k a year.
Harry Perryman: 6 year, 5.4mil contract at approx. 900k a year.

Free agency compensation is dumb, if a player finishes their contract and decides to leave, clubs should not get anything back imo. I think the AFL is the only sport in the world that operates like this.

I’m not saying it’s not dumb, I’m not saying that the AFL lack of complete transparency when it comes to their formula isn’t shady at best and corrupt at worst, all I’m saying is 1. The AFL have been pretty consistent whereby FA’s offered long term contracts on upwards of 800k a season will net you band 1 compensation and 2. The assistance package west coast got was not related to the free agency compo pick they got.

The AFL announced West Coasts assistance package on the 29th of September 2025 of 1 additional end of first round pick and 4 additional rookie spots.

The AFL announced West Coast would receive band 1 compensation (pick 2 at the time) on the 8th of October 2025 after West Coast decided not to match Brisbane’s contract offer to Oscar Allen.

You can call me narrow minded as much as you like but those are the facts readily available on the internet. You can go and do your own research behind it if you don’t trust what I’ve written above, I’m not doing your homework for you.

Publish the Rules, instead of the speculation as it’s still a best guess and open to favouritism within the walls of the AFL . You still havnt got my point and appear to have gone with a side track. I will let you go down that rabbit hole on your own

No I specifically mentioned that the AFLs lack of transparency when it comes to FA compensation is  shady at best and corrupt at worst. However I provided several examples of contracts around the mark of what Oscar Allen got that all resulted in band 1 compensation. The assistance package given to them weeks before that compo has nothing to do with it and if we did apply for it and get it it sure as hell wouldn’t net us a top 3 pick and that isn’t some AFL conspiracy used to disadvantage Richmond.

Anyway, it is what it is. Have a good weekend.

Should just abolish FA compensation. Not sure why the AFL feels the need to reward clubs for not being able to retain their players.

FA Compo + Academy + FS just makes the draft a bit of a joke with how many picks you end up sliding on the night.

Clancy Snell sounds nice if we want another big back.

Sounds like he might not be there by our 2nd rounder / compo however. Rising fast

Rising very fast. He's 6 in my rankings and most have him inside the top ten. I can see him pushing into the really top end with a dominant National Championships.

May not be out of the question that the Tigers would consider him at two if HVH was off the board.

What are the chances Richmond take him with the their first pick?

Assuming hvh gone to druggies and don't trade first rounder out.

Doesn't look impossible with dean going @ 3.

 - Williams sounds very small to be going that high.
 - Butler essendon fan so that's no good.
 - Teixeira looks nice but bit risky.

Not sure who else is in the mix.

Could then target mids with the compo and 2nd rounder

AJ I know next to nothing about the draft class but I can assure you butler being an Essendon fan will have a less than 0 factor in whether we take him or not lol

I think it's a very real possibility. At the moment he's my 4th ranked open pool player, but as you haver mentioned, there are doubts on both Butler (consistency and temperament) and Teixeira (lack of exposed form). Snelll looks a star key defender and would add to the Tigers list build nicely.

Butler apparently has question marks on size. Mentality. Tank. Kicking etc.

Along with all his good qualities.

A top line key back to put with Trainor is an interesting idea. More so if gibcus is cooked which is likely.

Annand & gray are still speculative while balta and Miller getting towards the old category
