I just think Butler and Tex are a fraction too similar therefore HVH and then whomever is left with next pick.

AFL Phantom Draft: How top 12 picks could play out in 2026

Where will the bids come? Is there a bolter? Who will Essendon take? With all eyes now on next month’s AFL Draft, Chris Cavanagh makes the early call on how the first 12 picks could fall.

With the trade period over, clubs are now turning all of their attention to next month’s national draft.

There are still five weeks to go and there is plenty to play out, but here’s an early look at how the top 12 selections could play out, based on the updated draft order.

1. Port Adelaide - Dougie Cochrane (matching Essendon bid)
Utility, 196cm, DOB: 2/5/08
South Australia/Port Adelaide/Port District
A 195cm natural forward who has his eyes on one day being a Marcus Bontempelli-type player, there is little doubt the Bombers will bid on Cochrane. Port is well-positioned to match, with picks 7 and 12 effectively enough points after a 10 per cent discount is applied for matching the bid.

2. Essendon - Ethan Drever
Midfielder, 188cm, DOB: 10/7/08
Vic Country/GWV Rebels/Ballarat
The Bombers have been searching for a big-bodied midfielder for some time and Drever is just that. He’s impressive on and off field, has been likened to GWS’ Finn Callaghan and put his blistering speed on display during the draft combine.

3. Carlton - Cody Walker (matching Richmond bid)
Midfielder, 188cm, DOB: 26/1/08
Vic Country/Bendigo Pioneers/Echuca
The Blues don’t have the points to match a bid on Walker at No.1 or No.2, but don’t expect one to come until the Tigers enter the frame. A powerful and dynamic player, Walker is ready to add another element to Carlton’s midfield.

4. Richmond - Harry Van Hattum
Ruck, 204cm, DOB: 7/1/08
Vic Metro/Northern Knights/St Mary’s
The Tigers will have to determine who they think gets through to their next pick, with West Coast and Melbourne to make selections before the Tigers get another go. But if they don’t think this 205cm ruckman with a big leap will still be there at their next pick, surely they take him here.

5. West Coast - Heath Mellody
Defender/Midfielder, 184cm, DOB: 27/07/08
Western Australia/Claremont/Wembley Downs
The Eagles haven’t been afraid to select interstate talent in the draft, but the local boy makes a lot of sense here. Mellody had an exceptional second half of the season through the midfield, winning the Larke Medal at the under-18 national championships and starring at senior level for Claremont.

6. Melbourne - Arki Butler
Forward/Midfielder, 183cm, DOB: 23/04/08
Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons/ Beaumaris
The Demons are also being linked to South Australian key defender Mitch Harris, but Butler would be hard to pass up if he’s still on the board. The exciting half-forward might have natural talent equal to anyone in the draft.

7. Richmond - Gus Teixeira
Midfielder/Forward, 181cm, DOB: 29/03/08
Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons/East Malvern
If Mellody and Butler are gone, it might be Teixeira here for the Tigers. The Sandringham Dragons product is a midfielder-forward with explosive speed and power who kicks goals, so would complement Richmond’s list well.

8. GWS Giants - Ethan Matthews (matching Sydney bid)
Midfielder, 186cm, DOB: 9/4/08
Allies/GWS Giants Academy/Ingleburn
The Swans getting ahead of the Giants’ first pick through the Nick Blakey trade makes things interesting. Matthews is a gun midfielder who has been rated a top-10 pick, so a bid on the Giants Academy member here wouldn’t be out of place.

9. Sydney - Mitch Harris
Defender, 196cm, DOB: 1/7/08
South Australia/Woodville-West Torrens/Kadina
Especially on the back of Blakey’s departure, boosting the key defensive stocks would he handy for the Swans. Harris might be the best of the big backs, as a 196cm product Woodville-West Torrens who defends strongly and also boasts some intercept ability in the air.

10. Gold Coast - Clancy Snell
Defender 196cm, 21/06/08
Vic Country, Gippsland Power/Mirboo North
The Suns’ list is pretty well stocked in a lot of areas, but perhaps could do with some more defensive depth. Gold Coast has shown interest in Snell, a 196cm interceptor from Gippsland Power who also showed some good mobility with a strong 2km time trial at the draft combine.

11. St Kilda - Wil Malady
Forward, 190cm, 12/10/08
Vic Country/Gippsland Power/Bairnsdale
The Saints aren’t at the very pointy end of the order, but should still get some strong talent through the door with two picks in the teens. Could Malady be the first of those? St Kilda has done its work on the mid-sized marking machine from Gippsland Power, who helped turn the Talent League grand final with three goals in just over three minutes.

12. Collingwood - Sam Gayfer
Forward, 194cm, 21/05/08
Vic Metro/Northern Knights/St Mary’s
A bit of romance here, with Gayfer being the nephew of a 1990 premiership Magpie, Mick Gayfer. But it makes sense for the Pies. An athletic and powerful marking forward with a draft combine record-breaking leap, Gayfer could learn a bit as Jesse Hogan’s understudy over the next couple of years.

I’m with you. Take HVH then you will almost certainly have 1 of Butler and Tex to choose from.

both appear more small forward types than mids.  Gus is even shorter at 181 cms.

maybe it would have been better to lose that game and finish bottom  :shh

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Have watched a bit of both at junior level. Feel like Arkie is more a forward than mid and Gus other way around.
Arkie more a match winner aka Wiz but a bit of a rat bag with Tex a genuinely lovely kid.

An interesting decision.

This might be a silly question and apologies if it's already been asked:

If Essendon bid on walker at 1 and Carlton don't match, could we take him as an NGA academy pick? Or because he's already nominated carlton as a father son then we don't have that option?

Not a silly question. I don’t believe we have any power there as he is only tied to Carlton as a father son now given he nominated them.

Thanks TK - thought that might be the case.

Would have been interesting if we held the #1 pick if we'd try and undercut carlton with walker. I suspect they'd have been more aggressive during trade period if that was the case though.

Gustav Teixeira Player Analysis | AFL Draft 2026

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thAACSgB1fg

Gus Teixeira - 2026 National Championships - WA vs Vic Metro
In Metro's first game of the Champs series the lesser lights got the chance to shine, while the more fancied prospects like Teixeira took a bit of a back seat.  Mind you, Teixeira still contributed and played his role well, especially during his rotations on ball where he scrapped hard for the footy and applied strong tackling pressure.  Metro rotated heavily, and the mids resting forward tended to struggle to stay in the game, Teixeira being no exception.  A decent first up Champs performance but one that I'm sure Teixeira will be hoping to improve upon in game two.

Gus Teixeira - BOG Performance - 2026 National Championships - Vic Metro vs Allies
Metro handed the Allies a bit of a flogging in this one and Teixeira was a major factor in their dominance.  Splitting his time evenly between midfield and forward he was Metro's major avenue to goal, kicking four of his own and setting up a number of other scoring opportunities for teammates with precision F50 entries.  His power and class were on full display here, a versatile package that seems perfectly suited to the modern game and could have Gus challenging for the top five in the pool.

Gus Teixeira - 2025 Talent League Wildcard Round
A request to go back and check out one of Gus Teixeira's stronger performances from last season as a bottom ager.  This is something I'll be doing more of now that the junior season has ended and many of the top prospects missed substantial chunks of the year, leaving us with a deficit of footage.  In this game Gus' pace and movement was a standout, especially in the forward line where he presented strongly on the lead, although his kicking was a little off the mark.

Gus Teixeira - 2025 Talent League Preliminary Final
Continuing to add depth to our coverage of Gus Teixeira by going back over some of his better games last season.  This was a high pressure prelim final and Gus was a little shaky with his disposal in the first quarter but became increasingly influential as the game progressed.  He did most of his damage as an outside receiver, using his pace to carry the ball forward, and showing his preference to hit up attacking options by foot in the corridor.  Teixeira helped to create several scoring opportunities and kicked one goal of his own to help his Dragons end the season for Will Duursma and his Gippsland team.

Yeah I think they are confident a bid won’t come until 3 which they are prepared for but I suspect if Essendon do a sneaky and try to nab him at 1 or 2 that they have contingency plans in place to move up the draft on the night to get more points to match.

If essendon bid on Walker and Carlton don't or can't match then he goes to Essendon.

If Essendon rate Wlker higher than Drever then its a good option for them to bid on him knowing P/A have the picks to match on Cochrane.

Dylan Alexander says here that he has had a couple of media "squirts" as a source saying Melbourne traded up to pick 4 to grab Teixeira or Butler. So, he has us taking Teixeira with our first pick and leaving Van Hattum to our second (pick 5).

HVT will get eaten up by the dees quicker than we can blink if he is not selected at 2.

With the gawn success that they have had, he is exactly what they need for the future.

Maybe. Maybe not. Their fans are frothing for a small forward type.

All over butler with a bit of love for Tex.
