Police Minister Tim Holding yesterday announced that private speed camera operator Tenix would reduce its night operations by three hours, ending at 8pm instead of 11pm from today.

Police radar guns and fixed speed cameras, however, will continue to operate around the clock.

The Opposition yesterday slammed the decision, saying it could lead to the deaths of more young drivers.

Mr Holding said attacks on camera operators had led to the temporary wind-down.

In the most recent attack last week a speed camera worker was threatened and a brick thrown through the window of his car as he sat inside.

The incident, about 8.45pm on Canterbury Rd, Blackburn, left the operator covered in glass and suffering cuts, grazes and shock.

"The Government condemns utterly any member of the public who tries to take the law into their own hands by attacking Tenix operators," Mr Holding said.

"They have a very tough job to do.

"The work that they do in operating speed cameras around the state is part of our road safety strategy. We understand Tenix has taken action in terms of withdrawing the program from after 8pm as a temporary measure.

"Police members will still be able to operate radar guns to make sure that speeding motorists don't take advantage of that period."

Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said young drivers would see the move as a green light to speed.

"Previously, speed camera operators worked from 5am to 11pm, there was a big gap overnight and this is where most young people were dying on our roads. This gap has just increased by three hours," he said.

"Young people won't take long to realise from 8pm onwards it's a no speed-camera zone and that's a worry."

Mr Mulder said the decision would leave a dent in the Government's revenue that would most likely be filled by the allocation of more speed cameras to busy roads at peak times.

A Tenix spokesman said the operator would talk to Victoria Police and the Government on permanent measures to protect speed camera operators from motorists.

I can't believe you guys have private contractors in control of speed camera's. Is Tenix a public company?? If so I'm sure they would be more focused on profit rather than reducing the road toll. Does anyone know if legislation was passed in the Victorian government to allow private contractors to perform such a task or did they just put it out for tender? If legislation was not passed then there could be a legal loophole for anyone who gets caught by a Tenix camera.
Here in NSW atm, the government stuffed up big time by not passing legislation when they moved fine collections from the police force to the office of state revenue. This case is currently underway but there could be millions of dollars in refunds to anyone who has paid fines to the office of state revenue.

NSW have a terrible reputation for big fines.  Some years ago, Hubby was fined $130 for parking in a "No Stopping" zone on a Saturday night in Lennox Heads where the only things opened at that time are the pub, the chinese take-away and the fish & chips shop (most expensive fish & chips I've ever had).

Also one of our former labourers  had the book thrown at him for trying to do a measly donut in Ballina on New Year's Eve.  If you saw his van you'd know what a joke even attempting a donut would be.  But there were 3 cop cars, he had his van taken off him for 3 months, it went to court and due to prior offences which occurred years ago, he has his licence taken off him for 13 months and fined $1500 and had to pay for the time his vehicle was impounded!!!!

Julz, maybe your cops should be focusing more on motor vehicle infringements rather than squirting capsicum spray and belting the crap out of people just because they had a couple too many at the local.  :lol Well at least thats how they are portrayed by the media in other states.

Could be worse tiga.  Could be Victorian police with their shoot-to-kill practices.

My understading tiga is there legislation in place regarding the private operator making it legal. Tenix have had the contract for yonks - first awarded by the Kennett Govt. I think it was 10 year contract or something stupid like that.
