AFLW Injury Report: Round 3, 2025

AFLW High Performance Manager Eliza Morrison has provided this week’s injury update as the Tigers prepare to fly to Darwin for Dreamtime against the Bombers.

Paige Scott: Foot, Available

"Scotty had a painful collision in our Round 2 game, just before half time," Morrison said.

"Scotty was able to play through the rest of the game, and we are confident they will be available for this week."

Grace Egan: Lip, Test

"Grace suffered a lip laceration from the game. She had surgery yesterday and will be a test for this week's game," Morrison said.

Sarah Hosking: Hamstring, 1-3 weeks

"Hosko is tracking well through her progressions and will continue to progress through matchplay minutes," Morrison said.

Montana McKinnon: ACL, 1-3 weeks

"Monty made an exciting progression last weekend when she returned to matchplay minutes in scrimmage," Morrison said.

"We will continue to increase Monty's minutes and hope to have her available for AFLW selection in the next one to three weeks."

Tessa Lavey: Hamstring, 5-7 weeks

"Tessa is moving through her progressions as planned," Morrison said.

"She has been working hard on the track to tick everything off, and we hope to have her returning to drills in the next one to two weeks."

The issues Tigers must fix after disappointing 0-2 start

ZERO marks inside 50.

It'll be the stat that's hanging over Richmond's AFLW side this week in the aftermath of its 21-point loss to the rebuilding Western Bulldogs.

The Tigers lost an elimination final last year to a rampaging Port Adelaide, 10th the year prior, and went out in straight sets in the second half of 2022.

If they're any chance of once again finishing in the middle rungs of the ladder in 2025, let alone closing the gap on the top sides, the connection inside 50 must be addressed, and quickly.

Richmond doesn't lack quality marking targets – Caitlin Greiser is a dangerous contested mark and one of the cleanest set shots in the competition (especially under the tutelage of new goalkicking coach Brendon Fevola), and few can stop Katie Brennan on the lead.

Paige Scott is an ever-present threat and loves to launch at the footy, while even full-back Bec Miller – the tallest on Richmond's list – has been thrown forward at moments of desperation over the past fortnight.

The problems appear to stem further afield, to the midfield that is sorely missing departed bull Eilish Sheerin.

The star veteran was out of contract and looking to greener pastures, whether at eventual new home North Melbourne or back in her home state of New South Wales, but the mystery of the trade itself – just pick No.18 for a dual-All Australian – will continue to linger.

Monique Conti can't do much more, but more authority is needed from former No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie, who has the potential to be a multiple All-Australian herself. Finally injury free, and turning 23 this year, the time is now for McKenzie to assert herself as a genuine and consistent matchwinner.

The third midfield rotation remains a work in progress. Ally Dallaway had the role in round one, and was dropped, with Grace Egan (who, it must be acknowledged, picked up an untimely quad at the end of pre-season) inserted in round two.

Isabel Bacon, in her second year of senior footy, is also building her time on the ball.

During his post-match press conference, coach Ryan Ferguson – out of contract at the end of the year, and in his sixth season at the helm – almost pled for his side to provide greater support for Conti.

"Every week for years now, Mon cops that attention. I don't think she gets looked after well enough – probably from us, umpires weren't a factor today, it was all on us. But I think she can get some support there. She gets scragged a lot," he said.

"It's not about Mon. She's doing a lot for our team. We can help her. It's the balance of the whole midfield unit – how can we work off on each other better, for everyone, not just the one player. How do we get that synergy better?

"We need to have more than 21 inside 50s. That's a whole team thing, as well as an engine room thing."

Richmond has just five days to turn its season around, going from Ikon Park on Sunday to the foreign conditions of Darwin, facing Essendon on Friday night in the Dreamtime match.

Maybe the trip away will just be the tonic for a team that Ferguson said is low on confidence, and needs to work on its mental strength.

But in a 12-round season, and with 0-2 already on the board, the Tigers need to get cracking.

I agree with the above article

However, there is one glaring error in it.

It says that Sheerin was put of contract. This is simply not true. Eilish was contracted for this season. I know this for dare I say it a fact.

Source? Eilish Sheerin herself.

Is it time to trade Conti?

Purely because it's cruel that the best player in the female game is at a club that clearly doesn't care about the AFLW

She obviously deserves better

Don't think we should try to trade her but TBH the last two trade periods I've been a bit surprised she hasn't asked for one herself for that same reason.

Bit like Richo vs Lids. One stayed, one didn't, but ultimately I don't really blame Lids for what he did after all that service.

Tigers take 'ownership' as Dreamtime looms

AFL Media
Aug 28, 2025

Richmond AFLW captain Katie Brennan has taken "ownership" of a difficult opening two rounds of the season, with the group adamant it has refocused for Dreamtime in Darwin.

With the squad ready to take on Essendon at TIO Stadium on Friday night, Brennan reflected on the areas they'll look to improve on.

"We didn't transition the ball the way we know we can (last week). We feel we've got the game plan and the weapons to execute that game plan," Brennan said on Thursday.

"But there's things falling down. Fundamental errors, or dropping marks, giving away free kicks, that we put our hands up as forwards. We want to be better.

"There's a link there. We feel like we are so close. We're ready to take that next step, to take ownership to know that we need to be better."

Richmond did not take a mark inside 50 last week in their loss to the Western Bulldogs, and fell away against a fast-finishing Swans side the week before.

But the slate has been wiped clean, with the chance to rewrite the season, away from home.

"It's looking at all the areas we know that we can improve on, not shying away from it and being strong. But it's also knowing that it's (our best footy) is there, and taking confidence in knowing how much preparation we put in over the off-season," Brennan said.

"We're almost trying too hard at times, so it's relaxing and letting our footy do the talking.

"We are really hungry to play our best footy and we're excited about that prospect. So just galvanise and know that our best is yet to come."

The skipper, who is in her 10th season of AFLW, admitted that getting away from the routine of Melbourne is doing the team, and her, a world of good.

"Getting on the road is one of the best parts about footy and spending time together," Brennan said.

"I know I'm not at my best. We want to be at our best. You take the learnings from it, you've got to keep moving forward. You just get hungry for the next contest.

"It's important to be in the moment and keep chipping away at what you can control."
