Track Watch: Who’s starring in match simulations?

Richmond's strong pre-season continued with an impressive mid-January week of training.

With Round 1 just six weeks away, Richmond returned to the Swinburne Centre on Monday for their main training, focusing on sharpening skills and fine-tuning match fitness.

The session began with ball skills followed by interval running, which saw emerging leader Jack Ross push the pace, leading multiple packs.

Contest craft was next, with the side splitting up into groups around the ground to compete in stoppage play.

Seth Campbell’s ability to win the ball at ground level was a highlight, hitting the ball at pace, dodging and weaving his way around defenders.

In the other pocket of the oval, Nathan Broad and Liam Fawcett locked horns in aerial battles, both competing hard to win the ball in the air. The youngster took it to the veteran, both bringing the best out in one another.

Moving onto a handball drill, involving a five vs five, keeping off simulation, James Trezise showed his elite pressure off the ball by making tackles and forcing the opposition into stoppage. The 23-year-old was equally impressive in attack, moving the ball forward with silky, quick handballs, finding targets and beating his opponent.

Next up was the most anticipated part of Monday’s session, as the squad moved into match simulation.

Fawcett and Harry Armstrong were kicking truly as they received rocketing passes inside 50 from Jayden Short and Rhyan Mansell.

Kaleb Smith and Tom Brown managed to work out of deep defence to allow the ball to land in Patrick Retschko’s hands, as he tore up the wing and got the ball to a running Sam Grlj.

Mykelti Lefau laid a crunching tackle and fed the winning ball to Jasper Alger, who snapped a clean goal around his body from 40 metres out.

Campbell was damaging all over the ground, wearing a pink bib as an option for both teams with possession to use. When receiving the ball, Campbell looked to move it quickly, playing off the mark and making valuable ground by foot.

Exciting youngster Steely Green also made his mark, acting as a prolific option every time the ball would float forward to the pocket. Green capitalised with elite marking, kicking goals as a result.

Tuesday's session took the group to the pool for lap swimming, before rounding things out with pilates, ahead of a big track session on Wednesday.

The session started with fast-paced skill drills followed by shuttle running, led by Ross and Retschko.

Josh Gibcus impressed in a transition drill, where he appeared to be gliding through the middle of the oval, hitting his kicks and weaving through traffic. Gibcus looked to be moving well after successfully making his return to senior footy in last season’s finale against Geelong.

Brown brought plenty of voice to the track, working hard in defence during a diamond drill, nailing kicks and forcing turnovers with his pressure acts.

To wrap up the session, the side went into a nine vs seven drill with Gray once again commanding the space with his lead at the football and willingness to compete in aerial contests. His decision-making and composure to offload the footy have been impressive, rarely missing a kick.

Forwards Fawcett and Lefau finished their sessions with some goal kicking, both taking set shots with extreme confidence from all angles of the ground.

Friday brought the Melbourne sun, which has become a signature for big training sessions at the Swinburne Centre, and Short was in full voice, while Toby Nankervis continued his ground ball work alongside the midfield group.

Working closely with Jacob Hopper and Sam Lalor, Nankervis led the way and applied pressure as they perfected their ground ball gets.

The side finished a big week on the track with a full oval match simulation. From the first ball-up, the intensity was at full pelt, with Jack Dyer Medallist Tim Taranto doing what he does best by getting his hands on the footy early.

On the opposing team, Ross managed to get in and under to win the footy at the next centre ball-up, bursting through a strong tackle and moving it on by hand.

The speed and composure from Grlj off half back was on display, as the draftee controlled the space, hitting up targets in transition. His pressure and ability to force turnovers were prominent.

An inbound ball from Armstrong set it up for Maurice Rioli at the half-forward line, where he scooped the ball up cleanly from the ground to then weave through an array of defenders to finish with a right-foot snap at goal. Rioli recorded two goals for the day.

Gibcus and Armstrong locked horns in repetitive aerial contests, both not giving an inch as they fought to win the ball.

Kane McAuliffe was also dangerous out of the middle, winning the ball at stoppage and notching important meters gained for his team on numerous occasions.

Noah Roberts-Thomson held his own from the forward pocket, attacking the ball hard in the air against bigger bodies, bringing the ball to ground, then picking up the crumbs and snapping an impressive goal. Roberts-Thomson kicked multiple goals in an eye-catching performance from the 54th pick in last year's draft.

Zane Peucker also had success in the forward line, strategically out-bodying his opponent to win the ball out the back, and walking through for an open goal.

Gray once again was a rock down back, spoiling and contesting every ball that came his way.

In the second period, Lalor got to work, winning the ball throughout the middle of the ground and proceeding to ‘don’t argue’ his oncoming opponent before slamming it down on his right foot to add another clearance to his name.

Brown was prolific around the ground, taking intercept marks, switching the ball and recording repetitive inside 50 entries, setting up his teammates on multiple occasions.

At the beginning of the third and final period, McAuliffe once again won the centre clearance off a tap from Lefau, booting 45 meters towards the goal square to find Fawcett leaping back, taking the mark with ease.

Alger looked dangerous in the third term, taking a leaping grab from 40 meters out after a hard running lead, leaving his opponent in the dust. The small forward went back for the set shot and kicked it true for a goal.

With one minute to go on the clock, the black jumpers trailed by just three points to the white team.

With the game in the balance, Rioli won the ball from just outside of the attacking 50 from a stoppage and proceeded to lace up Roberts-Thomson dead straight in front of goal about 30 meters out. With all the pressure on the draftee's shoulders, he calmly walked back and kicked the game-winning goal for his side to end the match simulation.

AFL Track Watch: All the match simulation standouts at Richmond

Josh Barnes and Lachlan McKirdy
HeraldSun
January 24, 2026

Gun Tiger Sam Lalor has laid down a pre-season marker, dominating match simulation in a pure midfield role as forward Maurice Rioli also shone.

Lalor played solely in the centre during an hour of match play on Friday morning and collected at least five centre clearances and slotted a beautiful set shot from the boundary in front of the Punt Rd traffic.

The 2024 No.1 pick was a standout on the inside and out and appears primed for an inside midfield role after playing 11 games, largely at half-forward in his debut year.

Having finished last season with a serious hamstring injury, there were no limits on Lalor’s game time as the Tigers played three periods.

Rioli played at half-forward on the same team as Lalor, wearing black jumpers, and slotted two goals in an eye-catching display.

The 23-year-old has put on the biggest summer of his career to date and was notably fitter during the match as he won his own ball in the clinches and applied his trademark pressure, playing as a high half-forward.

In a game dominated by small forwards, draftee Noah Roberts-Thomson and second-year Tiger Jasper Alger shone.

No. 54 draft pick Roberts-Thomson’s ability to find holes in the forward line alongside classy and clean finishing was notable as he bagged two goals for the ‘black’ team.

Summer standout Seth Campbell was another strong performer at half-forward for the ‘white’ team, while Campbell Gray put his hand up in defence with a rock solid performance.

Josh Gibcus played deep defence alongside mainstay Ben Miller for the ‘white’ side and while he was subdued he got through the match as he builds towards a rare full pre-season.

Harry Armstrong had some promising moments as a deep forward for the ‘black’ team but few talls had impact on the contest.

Mykelti Lefau largely played in the ruck against Oliver Hayes-Brown, with regulars Toby Nankervis and Samson Ryan sitting out the match sim.

Hayes-Brown dominated the ruck taps against the smaller Lefau and was active around the ground while summer train-on Marcus Krasnadamskis had some time in the ruck,

Talented forward Taj Hotton had some moments dodging in and out of tackles, while Sam Grlj’s dash of half-back was notable and Patrick Retschko found plenty of the ball when moved to the wing.

SITTING OUT

Most of the Richmond veterans stood out of the match sim, with Tom Lynch, Nathan Broad, Nick Vlastuin, Nankervis running laps, alongside Sam Banks and Jonty Faull.

On his way back from a hamstring injury, Hugo Ralphsmith started on the wing in the first quarter of match play before stepping out to complete running.

Luke Trainor was on track after copping a knock at training recently and was in a non-contact fluoro cap, and didn’t play, while Kaleb Smith played in a fluoro lid.

Watching on was 165-game Tiger Nick Daffy as his son Archie played at half-forward while the potential father-son gets a taste of AFL training.

Jack Leys, son of 110-game player Brian, was also on the field and had a purple patch running off half-back in the second period of the game.

Former No.7 pick Josh Smillie trained away from the group as he builds up from a serious quad injury, with the youngster on track to return to training early in February.

Richmond's youngsters are impressing this pre-season

Sam Lalor (FWD, $567,000) is working with the midfield group, while Sam Cumming (MID, $326,000) and Sam Grlj (DEF/MID, $322,000) have made an early impression.

"Sammy Lalor is spending more time in the midfield during the pre-season, really highlighting his power and his ability to create something for us from inside stoppage or inside contest," Tigers assistant coach Blake Caracella told Richmond Media.

"He has got a unique ability in contests, and ability to get the ball to the outside, and be quite damaging with the ball."

Cumming and Grlj, picks No.7 and No.8 respectively in last year's draft, are also showing good signs.

"Cumming … his ability to find the ball, I think he had 20-odd possessions in a half of match practice the other day, so he's going really well," Caracella said.

"All the young players have shown why they got drafted. Sam Grlj's ability to run and evade, and his speed and endurance on the outside, has been really obvious."

Track Watch: Ross, Sonsie, Faull and others impress

All the insights from an intense week of Richmond match simulations.

By Richmond Media
Jan 31, 2026

The vibes were high at the Swinburne Centre heading into another big week of pre-season training.

As the Melbourne temperature began to climb, so did the energy on the track early in the morning, with the players going through their running paces.

Steely Green was impressive and focused early, as he and Campbell Gray confidently completed their run-throughs and encouraged their teammates to keep up the pace as the mercury climbed.

Tom Lynch was silky smooth in full ground pattern drills, as he fed the ball to the ever-vocal and fast Jayden Short on the run, who was able to feed the ball inside 50 to a pouncing Mykelti Lefau on the run.

Taj Hotton was sharp in front of goal, as he snapped off a tidy Toby Nankervis tap down, after collecting the ball with just one hand on the run.

Match simulation concluded Monday’s heated session, as Ben Miller commanded the backline and took an impressive contested mark, to help set up Noah Roberts-Thomson on the run, who fed the ball to Kaleb Smith, before it ended in a goal for Rhyan Mansell.

Unity was on show as Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto led from the middle, guiding Sam Grlj and helping the young draftee utilise his pace to deliver the ball cleanly to Liam Fawcett at full forward.

James Trezise was powerful in defence, as he laid an impressive tackle just metres from goal, earning the ball back and handing it off to Miller up the line.

Noah Balta was confident in the air, as he marked and handed the ball off to Tyler Sonsie striding along the wing.

Sam Banks appeared to be hitting his stride in a multi-kick drill on Wednesday, leading up hard off the cone and hitting his targets by foot.

Similarly, Seth Campbell was making strong leads, receiving the ball at half-forward, then moving the ball on with a piercing kick to Jasper Alger in the pocket. The pair were in fine form, showcasing their elite foot speed and ability to mark the ball in the air.

The squad then moved into working within their respective line groups, which saw the forwards practice their tackling craft and transiting the ball inside 50.

Hotton set the tone, charging full speed at the tackling bag, then picking up the crumb to deliver the ball off to Green.

In the centre of the oval, it was Kane McAuliffe dominating the stoppage work with his explosiveness and clean hands at ground level. Jack Ross also impressed, showing composure around the football and keeping his opponent at bay.

Towards the end of the session, draftee Roberts-Thomson was showing his skill set in a nine vs seven drill, on both wings of the oval. The youngster took a strong overhead mark, quickly playing on and hitting a 35-meter kick to move the ball towards the attacking end.

Come Friday, it was time for another intense three quarters of match simulation.

Patrick Retschko set the tone early on the wing, scooping up a loose ball to then lace out Sonsie in the forward pocket.

Sonsie was everywhere, dominating at stoppage, winning the ball at both ends of the ground, and providing valuable metres gained for his team.

Gray took a leaping intercept mark, playing on straight away to hit Mansell 40 meters out, giving him a set shot on goal.

Veteran defender Nathan Broad returned to match simulation, having an immediate impact when he took to the field. Broad was spoiling balls, impacting the contest and moving the ball long down the line.

Miller was prolific down back, taking intercept marks and providing one-on-one competition for young forward Harry Armstrong as the two battled it out in an aerial contests.

Armstrong held his own, creating space and making opportunities for himself with strong leads up the ground, in one instance resulting in a set shot goal.

Jonty Faull showed positive signs, returning to match play after injuring his ankle, providing strong leads out of the forward line to set himself up for shots on goal. The second-year forward nailed a goal from about 60-metres out in an exciting sign for all Tiger fans.

Once again, Ross delivered in the midfield with his in-and-under attack on the football, winning it at ground level. Ross’ skills looked sharp, hitting a kick on a 45-degree angle inside his attacking 50.

Taranto was a standout, with his constant run and work rate around the ground setting him up for a goal late in the match, after a short kick from Maurice Rioli.

The very next play out of the middle, Rioli shone again, receiving the ball cleanly out of the centre square and lacing up Green at pace.

Draftees Zane Peucker and Sam Cumming each had strong moments at stoppage, showing their ability to get in and under to win the footy.

Late in the second term, Alger took a set shot on what appeared to be an impossible angle on the 50-meter line, only to go back and kick it straight through the big sticks. The goal was met with big celebrations from his teammates.

Dion Prestia was at his best, kicking a high-flying snap goal on the run after dodging his way through traffic.

It wouldn’t be match simulation without an epic Rioli chase-down tackle. This time it was Gray who drew the short straw after hitting the ball with pace and looking to move it on quickly by foot, but little did he know Rioli was on his tail and took a diving tackle just seconds before Gray went to kick it, resulting in a holding the ball.

Ollie Hayes-Brown and Lefau competed all day in the ruck, providing great outlets for their teammates.

After a strong hit-out under the hot Melbourne sun, the squad went through their warm downs in role mastery before breaking for lunch and finishing the day with Matt Duffie’s tackling session.
