Raises a few questions , whilst he is exactly what we need, what is that amount going to do to any future retention and recruitment at the club.

Yep. Need to do something
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

True but i think he would also want some sort of success. Not sure how our club can sell that in the short term

Some players have in the past taken lower offers to chase a premiership, gone to clubs in the premiership window

And then more often than not. Failed to win a flag.

Big money to reject.

If the dogs are favorites. How many more millions are Richmond offering than them? Id guess many.

Why don’t we get some great speedy Irish players? Why is it always the same clubs? We should be the leaders in this too!

Tigers have “great flexibility” to acquire talent

By Callum Twomey,
AFL Media
Jun 5, 2026

Richmond is preparing to target high-end rival players as well as retain its batch of top draftees with new deals under a clear salary cap strategy.

Speaking before last week’s game in Sydney, Club president John O'Rourke told AFL.com.au the Tigers were managing their total player payments with two clear focuses.

O'Rourke said the Tigers were positioning their cap space to be ready to re-sign top guns as well as go shopping.

"We've always done a good job in planning out where we sit from a cap point of view multiple years in advance and that's what Blair (Hartley) and the team have done again," O'Rourke said.

"I think we've got lots of options now, whether that's capacity for free agents in the short term or it's just maintaining flexibility.

"We haven't had this much young high-end talent even in our most significant period as we were building towards our premiership era. It wasn't as stacked with the high picks that we've got a hold of in the last couple of years, so that's part of the equation as well as to how we accommodate building a team around those players over the next three or four years.

"The starting point is one of great flexibility so I think we're well placed."

It’s believed Adelaide has offered Zac Bailey, a restricted free agent, a mega seven-year, $10 million deal. That would trump Brisbane’s offer, which is reportedly a six-year deal worth around $6-$.6.5 million.

We've been linked to Bailey as well, but moreso Butters.

I would rather Bailey for $10m over 7 years vs Butters $18m over 8 years

"Nice exit plan": Butters trade rumour that won't go away

By Connor Scanlon
SEN
5 June 2026

With Zak Butters entering free agency at the conclusion of the 2026 season, rumours have continued to fly around regarding which club the gun midfielder will land at over the offseason.

Rumours that Richmond was preparing a monster bid for Butters have been rife since Craig Hutchison tabled the news on the Agenda Setters in April.

Hutchy reported the Tigers would table up to $4.5 million for Butters in year one and make him captain immediately.

Reports of a similarly mammoth deal have started doing the rounds again this week with $18 million the number being touted.

Speaking on SEN’s Fireball, Kane Cornes dove into this enormous contract rumour.

The 300-gamer also explained that Port Adelaide would be willing to agree to a deal with Richmond over the likes of the Western Bulldogs or Collingwood, thanks to the Tigers' high draft pick for the 2026 National Draft.

“It's big… $18 million, $2.25 million (per year) with three to four million in the first year,” Cornes started.

“They are one club that can do it. I think Port Adelaide would be happy to do it with Richmond more so than the Western Bulldogs or Collingwood.

“They're going to have pick 2 (in the National Draft) as a starting point for Zak, then there'd be some change involved in that.”

North Melbourne legend David King chimed in on the conversation, stating that he also heard AFL.com.au’s lead football, draft and trade journalist Cal Twomey suggest that Butters is happy to go to one of three clubs – Richmond, Geelong or the Dogs.

King: “I've heard a lot of different ways of attacking this discussion.”

“I think it was Cal Twomey talking about maybe offering up two or three options – (Butters is) happy to go to Richmond, Dogs, or Geelong, but in that order.

“See what the best deal is you can get for your football club. That's a nice exit plan, isn't it? To give the club the best opportunity.”

Cornes: “And he can go wherever they can get the best deal done.”

“Has that ever happened before? I can't remember a player going, ‘I'm happy to go to one of three clubs,’ usually they name their club.”

King: “If you're going to take the $18 million over eight years, it's a nice way of massaging it, isn't it?

“‘I haven't taken the money, no, no, no, I said in court, I'll go to one of these three clubs. They chose the deal for Richmond, and here we are.’”

However, Cornes believes the Power star has already made his mind up about which club he will move to.

“I just think he's made his mind up though,” Cornes added.

“I think he's made his mind up six, 12 months ago. And they might know that he’s made his mind up.”

Regarding how this massive-money deal will impact Richmond, Sam Edmund is of the belief that it is an incredibly smart business move from the Tigers.

But it may still not be enough to push Butters to Punt Road.

“Smart business, isn't it?” stated Edmund.

“It's smart business in the sense that if you've got the money to spend, and Richmond clearly do, if you've got the money to spend and you've got a young group coming through, well, then you've clearly got a large balloon now to front-end a contract.

“Is it going to be enough to get him there? I still don't think so. I still think Zak Butters will want to go to a team that will contend in the short-term as opposed to the long-term.

“But you’ve got to be in it to win it, and I love it. I think it's great that they're having a red-hot crack it at Richmond.”

King added: “You couldn’t walk past that sort of cash, could you? It’s four million for one year!"

Butters has been averaging 30.7 disposals this season and will be an incredible pickup for the team which can get their hands on him.

I’m not overly enthusiastic about the offer for obvious reasons not related to how much a gun butters is.

If port can match it then I’ve got less than 0 interest in giving up our top picks in 2 drafts. I really doubt they can match it when you factor in it potentially being heavily front ended.

Richmond might have the best financial offer for Zak Butters. But that doesn’t necessarily make the Tigers the frontrunners for the most sought-after free agent in the game.

The Tigers have put a record offer to Butters worth as much as $18 million over eight years.

The Western Bulldogs, who industry sources say are still the most likely landing spot, Geelong and Collingwood are also currently in the picture.

As Butters does his due diligence on his home for 2027 and beyond as he looks to get back to Victoria for family reasons, all four suitors have levels of appeal.

Playing for a big Melbourne club, like Richmond or Collingwood, and in front of big crowd is seen as something that could interest the 25-year old.

The Tigers, clearly, have a war chest, and a figure in the $18 million range shouldn’t be underestimated. Not to mention, Richmond’s budding young list that should only improve from here.

It’s worth noting that, if Butters does indeed decide to head home to Victoria, the 17th-placed Richmond has, in theory, the best draft assets to make a deal happen. Given Port is all but certain to match any offer he receives, as a restricted free agent, and force a trade.

The Tigers currently have Pick 2, and you’d expect the selections tied to them over the next couple of years will also be thereabouts. Though Tasmania is set to have a big impact on the coming drafts (more on that later).

... if Port traded Butters to a club that finishes in the top six, its first-round pick in 2027 would drift into the 20s. So the idea of getting multiple first-round picks from a contender is more like one late first-rounder and early second-rounders.

In addition to the Power’s own 2027 pick moving back and the loss of Draft Value Index (DVI) points along with it.

Whereas, the team that finishes 18th is slated to have Pick 2 next year. The side that’s 17th is set to get Pick 4 and and third-last will get Pick 6.
