Glad we missed Zak, would have been a big mistake for our list in my view. Now we get the chance to bring in another 3 top end kids plus Briggs and Tanner Armstrong.

Plus if Leys or Daffy are in the frame we can get them too for nothing. And a delisted free agent if they fit our list need, again for free on a 1 year deal only.

Free agents next year absolutely or even trade in mature needs players. We will likely lose a couple to Tasmania Mansell, Banks and possibly even Nank which will give us extra draft picks.

I actually think we may have to use a pick for Jack Leys im not so sure about Tanner Armstrong. Think he will get to the rookie draft if we take him.
I do like the f/s feel good side of the whole thing and same for giving kids out of our acadamy zone a chance.

Oh Daffey as well more likely a rookie pick if we go with him. Another  good reason to turn over 10 or 12 this year

T Armstrong could be a Cat B Indigeneous chance maybe?

There is no doubt the Power and Dogs will be allowed to do a separate deal if it is fair value. But their idea of fair value will be very different to the 16 other clubs. AFL will work with them on approval. Any secret deal that bobbed up next year would be subject to penalties including draft pick removal. When clubs sign off on deals and state on camera there is no other linked deal, the AFL views it as the verbal version  of a statutory declaration

I'm deducing that Marshall is being used as a salary dump, in addition to Butters leaving? Contracted another 3 years and playing like a potato.

Port would end up with huge cap space.

How does Port get pick 5 as compo when they are trading Butters to the Dogs?

Cause they are losing butters as a fa and doing a separate trade

Because contrary to what the afl are saying about not allowing obvious side deals they are in fact allowing obvious side deals……

The pick 5 compo in this Zak Butters deal is well and truly in play.
Separately, the complex element is clearly Todd Marshall for two firsts. But Marshall is owed more than $800k a year until 2029 so the % Port is prepared to pay for the big man to play for the Dogs is critical in getting it through.
AFL has ticked off on similar deals in the past.

Jake Riccardi remains unsigned at the Giants, with multiple Victorian clubs having interest in him as a tall forward option

The AFL  need stop calling it a compensation pick up and call it a supplementary pick. It’s cheating but in the AFL endeavours to previously help their favourites it’s set precedents that penalise all  other clubs

Glad to see we missed on Butters i don't think he was ever going to get to us.
he is a great little player but my fear was he could drag us up to mid table on his back and deny access to enough talented kids.
How often have we seen clubs hunt the big fish in a bid to rise from the bottom only to ever finish mid table and no mans land.

Sheesh 19 mil over how many years how the hell were we going to be able to go for other free agents etc. If our kids are any good we are going to be paying plenty for them as well.

I really think if done right and it takes longer but set the whole club up with a succession plan that enables us to stay up and win at the same time.

I think Benny Gale had a vision on how to get there but lacked a vision that entailed a good succession plan to keep us there.

Yep, right on Claw.  I wasn't that interested in Butters for all of those reasons.  It is the long road that we are taking but I'm ok with that.  I'd prefer the long road to locking up our salary cap & watching our young guns drift away to get better money.  St Kilda have rolled the dice with some big deals with big contracts & it may all go down the tubes as early as this trade period.  They signed up Nas to a huge $2M deal & he just might end up leaving ... oops!
The $19M 9 year deal for Butters could be a brilliant boat anchor ... dragging a club down, down down ... I'm glad we kept away from it.
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!  Loud, proud & dangerous!

"This is not a salary dump like Jack Bowes, this is actually the opposite – this is pick purchasing."

@CalTwomey explains how the Zak Butters move can get done with free agency compensation, along with a potential trade involving Todd Marshall.

"I think there's more than one club involved"

Twomey compared this to the side deal for Brandon Starcevich the Lions and Eagles did separate (which included a third club in Freo) to the Oscar Allen compo pick last year. Doing a side deal meant the Eagles didn't lose that early first round compo pick.

Marshall being on that sort of money is utterly insane.

WB won't be able to afford it.

So it looks like Port is essentially offloading a modest player and paying for more picks for Butters (Marshall salary).
