Honestly we are probably the only team who could afford him.

"If I was Richmond, I would start now." - @camluke

Should the Tigers be preparing to go after Logan Morris at the end of the 2029 season already?

Mega 18-club AFL trade guide

Jack Jovanovski and Ben Cotton
Fox Sports
October 4th, 2026

The 2026 trade period opens for business on Monday, as free agency heats up in a big way.

Foxfooty.com.au explores what your club is expected to try and get done over the coming days.

RICHMOND

The Tigers officially secured ruckman Kieren Briggs’ commitment on the first day of free agency.

But as far as additional pursuits go, there doesn’t look to be much in Richmond’s pipeline after late throws at the stumps for GWS’ Jake Riccardi and Hawthorn’s Bailey Macdonald missed the mark.

From that, we can glean that the Tigers are on the lookout for forward-half key-position depth and experience, while the club could use some more quality across half-back — irrespective of Jayden Short’s potential departure. Dual premiership winner Short has expressed an openness to exploring rival opportunities, with Collingwood and Melbourne looming as the likeliest destinations.

A prospective second-round pick via trade would assist the Tigers in having one more big crack at the draft in November before Tasmania monopolises it next year, with the club set to gain a second-rounder on draft night when a rival bid on Dougie Cochrane will be matched by Port Adelaide in the top five.

If we somehow secure P27 for Short, we may as well just hit the draft again with 2, 19, 20, 27 before slides.

I'm actually in favour of essentially carrying a spot into the MSD and just seeing what we desperately need at the time. There are players on the list I wouldn't bother extending and if we have another injury crisis we know the AFL will let us field a VFL player.

Come the MSD just see if there's any good 23-28 aged forwards or whatever we need and have a punt then.

Good and well Andy but if we keep doing that it says 2 things to me.

1. We have botched some high picks in recent times

2. We are 8 years away from competing and 2027 is the year we actually bottom out so be prepared for that. Our list looks a like like it did in 2009.

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

What would you do differently?

Looks like the club couldn't sell a sausage at a Bunnings sausage sizzle. We've got Briggs so far, nobody else has shown any interest. We are looking like hitting the draft and re-contracting some very sub-standard players simply because we have nothing else to fill the spot with.

Port Adelaide clearly open to a cap dump with Todd Marshall even though it won’t be with the Dogs. Trying to find ways to create picks and find a better draft hand. Jason Cripps says there is plenty of interest from clubs for pick 4

“If we’re not given something that we think is fair value…pushing him into the draft and what that would look like…I’ve had a lot of conversations with Blair Hartley (Rich) over the journey and we’re pretty close

Richmond not ruling out last-minute Zak Butters play

Mitch Keating
zerohanger.com

Richmond list manager Blair Hartley hasn't shut down a last-minute move for wantaway Port Adelaide superstar Zak Butters as talks between the Power and the Western Bulldogs - Butters' desired landing spot - continue.

Richmond, along with Geelong, were also in the race for Butters' signature; however, the Power midfielder opted to elect the team he followed as a kid.

Discussions between the Power and the Dogs remain ongoing, with Dogs list boss Michael Regan noting those discussions are heading in the right direction.

However, with talks likely to extend late into the week, potentially sparking some uncertainty around whether both sides of the negotiations will be appeased, Richmond remains in the loop.

"We were just joking before. I think I've probably spoken to Jason more than my wife this year," Hartley said.

"We obviously get along well. We've worked together before. I've been speaking with him throughout the course of this year.

"Everything's still live. It's day one of the trade period."

Port Adelaide list boss Jason Cripps said the club wants to "avoid" a situation where they look beyond the Western Bulldogs, believing the club understands what the Power expect in return for their star player.

"(Butters is) clearly our best player and he's one of the best players in the competition," Cripps said.

"I'm not going to lie. I would rather be standing here and dealing with a team that's closer to the bottom of the ladder.

"Clearly, we'll do our best to facilitate the best outcome for us with the Western Bulldogs, but it could have been a lot worse.

"I've had a lot of conversations with Blair Hartley over the journey, and we're pretty close. We want to avoid that.

"We've had enough conversations with the Western Bulldogs for them to have a really clear understanding of what our expectations are, and they're getting to work."

The Power will decide to either not match the Bulldogs' free agency offer and therefore pocket Pick 5 as compensation, or force a trade and see the Dogs package a deal to secure the midfielder.

There is a reality where the Power take the compensation before looking to secure a separate trade deal with the Dogs - a play that will be closely watched by the AFL.

The Western Bulldogs hold Picks 12, 31 and 53 for this year's AFL Draft, as well as all of their selections for the 2027 and 2028 drafts.

Richmond, meanwhile, possesses Pick 2, as well as selections 20, 42 and 61 for next month's count.
