Inside Richmond's pursuit of Zak Butters. The vacant No.9 jumper, the stack of texts from star-turned-recruiter Sam Lalor, the huge front-ended offer, the magnet board with the best 23 being picked. The Tiges gave it a good crack.

Tigers list boss Blair Hartley told media last week he had met with Butters three or four times throughout the season, and their financial play was significant, including what is understood to have been a deal of close to $5 million in year one of their nine-year offer.
They gave him a No.9 Tigers jumper and their No.1 pick Sam Lalor - who is from Bacchus Marsh, around the corner from Darley - took it upon himself to lead the charge.
"I got a lot of text messages from Sammy, he's a good fella," Butters said.
The last play from the Tigers saw Hartley fly to Adelaide for a final attempt in the weeks before he chose the Dogs, with the pair getting out the magnet board and picking Richmond's best team. Butters is a footyhead and knowing the unknown on their list wasn't hard for him.
"They've got a lot of talent and high draft picks and were probably looking to bridge that gap between their experience and younger boys. And I fitted that mould with my age demographic and wanting to come back to Melbourne," he said.
"I got along with Blair really well and they're obviously highly skilled and professionals in their area. I weighed that up but I thought for where I am in my career, I didn't think it was the exact right fit for me right now at this time."
