A Tiger supporting caller just rang in saying what's going on down at Punt Road getting basically a dud like Rawlings as assistant coach. Schwarz jumped in and said Rawlings' knowledge of the game is excellent and you need to sit down with him to see it.

I would have to agree with the caller. This is by far the worst decision made by the club since the arrival of Wallace. I felt for Jade when the Hawks basically screwed him a couple of seasons ago in the trading process but I don't believe from what I have seen of his demeaner that he has got what it takes to be a successful member of a coaching staff.

Wowoden (sp) will be a similar mistake if taken, McCrae (sp) would be the better choice.

Looking in from the outside, I would prefer Craig McCrae too. Passing onto our youngsters Leigh Mathews' advice and ways would be a good thing.

The Richmond Football Club today announced the appointment of triple Brisbane Lions premiership player Craig McRae as its Player Development Coach.

McRae, a key member of the Lions’ premiership hat-trick in 2001-03, played 195 games and kicked 232 goals in a highly-successful AFL career from 1995-04.

He has spent the past couple of seasons coaching Queensland’s under-18s side and guided the Scorpions to the Division Two title at this year’s championships. That led to him being named assistant coach of the 2006 under-18 All-Australian team.

The Tigers believe McRae is an ideal fit for their newly-created position of Player Development Coach.

The Tigers believe McRae is the ideal person to guide their array of talented young players.

Strange  ??? Hope it isn't costing too much - unproven and seems very ify about what his actual role is going to be ? I find this very strange BUT trust the boys.

tom hafey was a pathetic player, totally crap, but u would say he was a bad coach hey!
he is apparently very good from all reports from ppl in the know.

Unlike David King and now Craig McRae, Rawlings doesn't come from a successful premiership-winning club. I would say that would have a lot to do with the concerns. We've just got to trust the Club on this one as they did seem to go through a pretty extensive interviewing process. It wasn't like Spud where he got the gig by default just because he was the only one who said yes.

spud was the only player to accept a jog yes, but in this case a number of ppl wanted the job bar sos, and richmond chose who they wanted.....different all together

True not as a player in the VFL but Hafey did coach Shepparton to 3 flags in a row before getting the Richmond job.

I don't think you can really compare a person's ability as a player compared to their ability to coach.  Grant Thomas, Denis Pagan, Chris Connolly, Mark Williams and Neil Daniher didn't play in premiership winning sides and Paul Roos only played in a runner-up.  Alastair Clarkson must have been so bad he doesn't even feature a mention on Wikipedia
