Learning and adapting
« on: July 10, 2006, 04:45:55 PM »
Is it just me thinking this or do others here feel that we are one of the best teams in the comp atm in learning from our losses and adapting our gameplan in an effort to defeat the opposition. "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger" is the catchphrase that comes to mind. We have had some very disappointing losses this season but the most impressive thing for me is that we have taken something out of each of these losses and put it to good use the following week.

The coaching staff and the players now seem to realise that we need to adapt various styles of play each week depending on the opposition and the conditions. For the first season in a long time It's great not seeing the same 'dumb' football being played week in week out whether we won or lost. TW is a very smart man and this is rubbing off on the players who not only are starting to believe in themselves but are also thinking outside the square in an effort to win.

Look at how we beat the Crows. Originally people were bagging us for our tactics, now other clubs are doing the same. Look at how we beat the Pies in the wet by adapting tactics to suit the conditions. Look at how we shut down Shaun Burgoyne and came away from AMMI with a win. I'm sure other clubs are taking note. These wins are far from being flukes. They are calculated well by the coaching staff and carried out to the letter by the players.

In the Frawley days if we lost I was disappointed because it always seemed like one step forward, two steps back. Now under TW, losses are easier to take because now for every step backward, we are taking two forward.

Keep it up Tiges! :thumbsup

For me the Swans belting seemed to be loss that proved to be the most positive lesson in the long-term. It seemed amongst the players afterwards that there was a collective "oh so that's how you do it and that's what Wallace has been on about" in regards to how modern footy is played and in particular the latest craze "tempo footy". No harm from learning from the reigning premiers when in top form (unlike now).

As a bonus the cubs appear to be the ones that have learnt the quickest and a number of them have lifted to the next level which has taken the workload off the oldies and shared it around. Helps that they didn't need to be de-spuded ;D first then reprogrammed as did the senior guys. Browny playing more like his old self has also added that touch of class.

Also we haven't allowed injuries to become an excuse or crutch. We've just opened the door of opportunity to the next cub (Whitey the latest one) and got on with it.

Yes, that was a disappointing game, but as like we did in Round 7, we will come away and improve on what we did wrong. We are still a young side and it will take time, but at least we didn't get thrashed by as much this time :P
Good to see some of the young blokes getting some confidence too ;D
