Great Tigers You Have Met
« on: July 11, 2006, 12:00:10 AM »
Being around the club since the '60s, I've met a few over the years.
Greatest would be spending an hour or so with Jack Dyer one morning when I went to his house to get a jumper signed for a function that night, and had the best time just talking to the old fella, reminiiscing about Richmond and the suburb, etc.  Took me mum with me and will be something we will both remember forever. :thumbsup

One special moment for me was when i was about 14 and a few girlfriends and I were hanging outside the dressing rooms at Waverley waiting for the players to come out and get an autograph or whatever.  And a Geelong player (who later played for us) came past and not so kindly told us to rack off lol.  Not feeling too good after that, was great when Rex came out of the rooms with his wife, and asked us all if we wanted a ride.  So, we all piled into his car and off we went.

Another time I was hanging around training before I went off to training myself at the Olympic pool.  And as I was heading off with my girlfriend to go to training, Balmey came along and gave us a ride.

The great thing about those days was the players were pretty friendly and they didn't mind giving you a lift wherever you were going, or come up and say hello to you.  Got another ride off Bondie another time when we were collecting for the Children's Hospital.

I remember Ox told us about being friends with Roy Wright - or his dad was - and I imagine WP has met a few greats over the years.

Anyone wanna tell us their stories if they've got a special moment.

Not much for the stargazing or being in awe of 'famous people' just leave em alaone if I ever come accross them, unless friends know them and are introduced.

But being at the Save our Skins and bumping into Jack Dyer outside the ground, had to say g'day to the great man and get an autograph.

Had a good chat with him, one thing I learnt that day was his hatred for collingwood wasn't put on. :rollin

Shame I had a few 2 many that day and left my stubby holder he had signed on the train. Still I got one of those signed prints of him swiping that StKilda dude that has pride of place on my wall.

Ahhh one that just came to me, when I was a wee tiger- well 11 12i ish Cant actually remember, we use to holiday next to an ex Nth Melbourne president who was good mates with Tommy Haffy. We used to muck around with the north blokes kids and one day whenI was over there this dude turned up.

The kids old man new I was a Potential Mad tiger (I wasn't quite MAD at that age) and introduced this Max Oppy bloke to me .... efed if I knew who he was then but now I do. Wasn't a bad old stick from memory,I got his signature that day personally signed to me, but that went missing over the years...

Agree, pretty much the same here.  Hence, most of my good memories are when i was a kid.  When you're a kid, you think you're heroes are wonderful.  As you get older, you couldn't give a stuff as long as they play good footy or whatever lol.  Which is how I think most ppl on websites are these days.  Probably why players get bagged so much these days.  Most of my good memories are of the '60s and '70s when I was young and naive about ego lol.  Celebrity is an overrated status IMO, but a very powerful influence on kids.

Same here CUB. The players get mobbed enough.

Met Matty Knights, Hoggy, Justin Pickering and most Tigers that were with the U19's during the 80's. Knighter was always approachable and friendly although he didn't spend too long down at U19 level as he was a class above even as a teenager.

I met Michael Roach at Dimmeys one day during the 80s.Genuine nice guy and quite humble.

I was a volunteer statistician the second half of 1990 and all of 1991 under the watchful eye of club historian Bill Meaklim.

KB was coach at the time and quite friendly. As was Emmett  Dunne his assistant.Met most of the players and got to see alot behind the scenes stuff.Matty Knights was one of the most approachable players there.Didnt think much of Barry Young..bad attitude that guy.

One time at Arden St the u/19s stats team went to VFL Park instead and i was in the poo trying to do stats on my own until Barry Rowlings came to the rescue and did the calling forr me.He was a top guy to chat with.Ended up reminiscing about the eighties particularly the day Francis Bourke got the gash above his eye at Arden st, kept playing and went foward i think to kick a goal.

Most recent player i bumped into was Nathan Brown late last year and he was quite pleasant to chat to and very down to earth.

Well i am a little Fuzzy on it (long ago and very young) but here goes.

Back in the 60's I used to play for Oakleigh Youth Club. This was in the days that there were zones and to my joy Oakleigh was zoned to the Tigers. We used to get differnt Tigers down to training now and again. The biggest memory was the Presentation night when I got my "Most determined" trophy presented by Tommy Haffy. At least thats how i remember it but I was only 8 or 9 at the time. I have met him a couple of times since but he doesn't remember my presentation night. ;D

I also got to play for the Tigers Little League that year but thats another story. (and thats my highest moment in footy so I am not claiming any great playing ability :-[ ).
Here , kitty kitty. Here , kitty kitty.   AAAUGH!

As a young boy I met a few of our past great players. In the 70's Kevin Sheedy just lived down the road from me and was a friend of the family. After his regular runs around Caulfield Park he used to duck in for a swim at our place. He got me into the rooms at the G on several occasions where I met the likes of Royce Hart, Ian Stewart and Kevin Bartlett.
Ahh those were the days. Huttons hot dogs, white crow sauce and hot Maymax donuts that scarred your mouth for a week.

I remember Kevin Sheedy coming to our high school and some of us got his autograph.  A couple of years ago at training at the Gabba I got to meet Dale Weightman.
