Round 15 previews
13 July 2006   Herald-Sun
Robert Grant and Adam Cooper (AAP)

RICHMOND v MELBOURNE at MCG 7.40pm

Head to head: Richmond 95 Melbourne 74 Drawn 2

Last time: Melbourne 20.11 (131) bt Richmond 11.8 (74) R10 2005 Telstra Dome.

TAB Sportsbet: Richmond $2.85 Melbourne $1.40
Centrebet: Richmond $2.80 Melbourne $1.43

An obvious danger game for Melbourne as it keeps the chase on the top two. The Tigers have claimed the scalps of Collingwood, ladder leaders Adelaide and Port Adelaide (at home) in recent weeks. Spearhead Matthew Richardson should be better for last week's run. Melbourne escaped with an eight-point win over Brisbane at the Gabba but was pleased with the outcome, even though its defence went missing for much of the game. The Demons have a better all-round spread of skill than Richmond, more speed out of the centre and a far more effective forward line, but will need to concentrate for four quarters to avoid being taken by surprise.

Key: Melbourne's firepower, with skipper David Neitz, Russell Robertson and the most elusive man in the league Aaron Davey leading the charge, looks too much of a handful for the Richmond backs.

Tip: Melbourne by 25 points.

Ruck duel key to result

MELBOURNE ruckman Jeff White holds the key to tonight's much-anticipated clash against Richmond at the MCG.

Last season, when the Demons accounted for the Tigers by 57 points, White was the standout performer.

So much so that when he was off the ground, Richmond kicked eight of its 11 goals, a damning statistic.

The major difference tonight is that White will have to contend with Troy Simmonds, lauded by coach Terry Wallace as being in All-Australian form.

After losing weight, Simmonds has excelled on the ball this season, and has also drifted forward to kick 18 goals.

By comparison, White has only eight goals to his credit, but in nearly every other area it is hard to split them.

White has had 238 disposals to Simmonds' 230, 85 marks to 95 and 303 hitouts to 252, with 22.1 per cent of those hitouts to his team's advantage, compared with Simmonds' 21.8 per cent.

White leads the clearances 41 to 31 and contested possessions 85 to 68, while Simmonds has a slight edge in uncontested possessions, 161 to 154.

While the ruck duel appears a 50-50 proposition, the Demons might have an edge when White is off the ground.

His ruck partner Mark Jamar looms as a wildcard against the relatively inexperienced Adam Pattison.

Jamar's support is one reason why White has averaged 78.9 minutes a match this year to Simmonds' 103.1. Both have played all 14 games.

Richmond forward Nathan Brown broke his right leg against the Demons in Round10 last season.

Brown trained lightly at Punt Rd yesterday and it would not surprise to see Matthew Whelan tag him again.

Melbourne's other wildcard is captain David Neitz, a late withdrawal from the corresponding game last season because of a hamstring injury.

Neitz kicked 15 goals against the Tigers in two outings in 2004. Darren Gaspar is likely to have first crack at him tonight, giving Joel Bowden a free rein to set up attacks from defence.

At the other end, Nathan Carroll is likely to get the chance to redeem himself against Matthew Richardson, after conceding eight goals to Brisbane Lion Daniel Bradshaw last week.

Match-ups in the midfield are also likely to determine tonight's result.

Demon playmaker Travis Johnstone, who has had 170 effective kicks this season, will need to be shut down if the Tigers are to prevail.

Richmond captain Kane Johnson looms as his likely minder after his sterling effort against Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne last weekend.

Cameron Bruce, who has 331 disposals and 112 marks this year, will need stopping.

Perhaps the Tigers will entrust Greg Tivendale with the task of containing him.

Tivendale leads the club in tackles (53) and has the pace and height to match Bruce.

This would leave the clubs' best clearance exponents, James McDonald (Melbourne) and Shane Tuck (Richmond), to go head-to-head at the centre bounces and stoppages around the ground.

They have 55 clearances apiece, while McDonald has a slight edge out of the centre, 33 to 30.

Without the injured Mark Coughlan and Chris Newman, the Tigers look to be slightly undermanned to tackle the Demons' fleet-footed runners including Brad Green, Adem Yze and Aaron Davey.

Yze proved a trump with five goals last year, while Davey is always capable of producing a freakish goal, as evidenced by his World Cup-like efforts of the past two weeks.

Green has been the Demons' most capable performer of the past month with 41 marks (second in the AFL), 63 effective kicks (second) and 39 short kicks (sixth).

Bowden bros having ball in defence
14 July 2006   Herald-Sun
Mark Stevens

WELCOME to the Bowdens' back yard. Joel and Patrick Bowden have taken brotherly love to new heights this season, sharing the ball between themselves like no other pair in the AFL.

Like a kick-to-kick session out the back of mum's place, the Richmond defenders have combined 55 times so far in 2006.

Exclusive stats reveal Joel has kicked or handballed to his younger brother 30 times. Patrick has returned the favour on 25 occasions.

Their closest rivals on the ``waxing'' index are Western Bulldogs Scott West and Daniel Cross, who have combined 47 times.

The Bowdens' partnership peaked against Port Adelaide last Saturday night when they combined 11 times and boosted the family stats.

Twenty-six of their 55 combinations have come in the past month.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said last night he did not have a problem with the Bowdens combining so often, even if teammates were starting to rib the brothers.

``The boys are into looking at that sort of thing,'' Wallace said.

``But I haven't said anything. If it goes overboard I'll have my say. The numbers might suggest they're going overboard, but they're not. It hasn't been an issue.''

Tonight the Bowdens step on to the biggest home-and-away stage of all - the MCG - and Melbourne is faced with the challenge of busting up their love-in.

There is speculation Demons coach Neale Daniher may use a defensive forward to lock down Joel Bowden.

``You've got two options. You can send players out specifically to play on them, but if you don't do that, they decide who they play on,'' Daniher said yesterday.

Three weeks ago Hawthorn used Luke Brennan to hound Joel Bowden and restrict his ball-winning ability.

But Daniher is adamant he is content for the Bowdens to focus on shutting down his dangerous forwards, and deciding which opponent they play on.

``That's been our usual mode of operation. We've got some dangerous forwards. We'll probably back ourselves,'' Daniher said.

The Bowdens have spent recent weeks patrolling near goal, often allowing their opponents to head further up the ground to chase kicks.

When they're not chipping the ball around near goal, regular kick-in exponent Joel is looking for his younger brother after a behind.

Joel has found Patrick from a kick-in 13 times this season, a competition high.

Collingwood's James Clement has kicked in to Heath Shaw 11 times, as has Bulldog Lindsay Gilbee to teammate Jordan McMahon.

But what makes the Bowdens' feats more amazing is the fact that early in the season Patrick spent a lot of time up forward and a long way from his brother.

It is understandable that West and Cross have found each other 47 times, 44 times via handballs, considering they play so close to each other every week.

Wallace said last night Patrick Bowden, recruited from the Western Bulldogs, had been a huge success. He said he had originally earmarked the younger Bowden as a ``high forward or winger''.
That all changed when Wallace gave Patrick the job on Adelaide's Ken McGregor in Round 8.

``We didn't select him as a backman and then we lost (Will) Thursfield and (Darren) Gaspar and (Jay) Schulz went down,'' Wallace said.

``It almost happened through necessity.

``He is generating a hell of a lot of ball.''

I think we play the underdog tag the best in the comp. We are very good at the MCG if not one of the best sides there. Everyone wrote us of against the Pies and we embarrased them. Melbourne are not as good as people make them out to be. Should be a crackerjack of a game tho.

I hope you're right, Chops.
Hate getting ahead of myself, but am quietly confident of playing well tonight because of how we've played the 'G this year.
If it was at the Dome, I would be very nervous at the moment, but anticipating a good match tonight at least.
I'm sure we can match them.

Welcome to OER  :thumbsup
