Tigers take lion's share
28 July 2006   Herald-Sun

RICHMOND is the TV king of Friday night football.

The yellow and black attract a bigger average Melbourne TV audience for the prime-time fixture than any other club.

Terry Wallace's men lure more than 479,000 fans each time they take to the Friday night stage, proving those in Tigerland love their lounge room footy.

Figures provided by OzTam show the Tigers have been a couch potato's best friend since Channel 9 won the AFL rights in 2002.

But rival Essendon is the runaway favourite when it comes to selecting the combatants for the lucrative slot.

Of the 101 Friday night games played since the start of 2002, the Bombers have featured in 33 - the most of any team.

And they are averaging more than 468,000 viewers. The Kangaroos, who became the pioneers of the night football concept in the 1980s, are third with an average of 464,846.

Collingwood rates well, with Friday night games boasting an average of 458,357 viewers.

The biggest average Melbourne television audience for Friday night football on Channel 9 is 639,000 for the Collingwood-Essendon clash in the last round of 2003.

Pretty incredible stat given we seem to play crap in these games  :-\.

25 years as the least successful Victorian side and we still deliver the biggest crowds and tv audiences. Well done RFC  :clapping. Some much for the opposition idiots on BF's main board who claim we're no longer a Big 4 Victorian club.

You'd expect now with the FNF audience figures falling over the last 3 years that we'll get more FNF games next year (in place of the Bombers lol) as Ch 7 will want to maximize ratings after all the dough they have forked out on getting the tv rights.

The sleeping giant is slowly awakening  :thumbsup.

Information like that is worth sponsorship dollars gentlemen. Its a good result and we should make the most out of it with getting more money out of existing sponsors and finding some new ones.

We still get  pretty good crowds, Friday nights give me the geischs but I still go as it is an ingrown habit to be there if I can.
If we get too many more because of this and they go live against the gate maybe a bottle of johny and whatever else in front of the fire in the middle of winter may become more of a tradition in future. and then again maybe not we'll see.

not sure a bout that. i am certain that over the last 10-12 yrs the pies are! the pies have won the least amount of games over the last 10 or so yrs , i think it may be 12, so that makes them the least successful club over the past decade, who cares they made 2 grannies, they lost them, and apart from those 2 yrs and this yr, they have been worse than us

Make the sponsors pay us the $$$$ - If we are getting these figures it should be in comparitive terms to what other clubs get. Cause lets face it they are getting more exposure.
And especially on a Friday when people are in a good mood, had a few drinks or whatever are more inclinded to be tempted by advertising, especially if the mighty tigers are winning. Must make the most of this situation in the coming years and establish ourselves as a powerhouse and reclaim what was once our domain. It may be a bit early to push the point but numbers = $$$$$ and we must make the most of it.
Even considering our recent history we still pull reasonable numbers in comparison and when we play finals consistently the sponsors will damn well know that the tide goes both ways. :gotigers

That's true X over the past 10-12 years but back to back GFs let alone back to back finals is something we haven't achieved in over 30 years. One year up then 5 years or more down doesn't build any momentum for a club as far as members, sponsors, big tv games, etc.. Unlike other clubs we've just been lucky that we have such a loyal and passionate (feral) supporter base that is just hungry to jump on the bandwagon.
