Chaffey wants to play on next year

Playing for his career
12:23:50 PM Wed 2 August, 2006
Paul Gough
Exclusive to afl.com.au

But the veteran Richmond defender, who last week made his long-awaited comeback against the Western Bulldogs after exactly a year on the sidelines with the debilitating groin condition osteitis pubis - is determined to show the Tigers he has a future at Punt Road beyond this year.

"It all depends on the next five weeks," Chaffey told Sportal, when asked about whether he expected to play on in 2007.

"I certainly would love to play for another year but it's up to me and how I got about my footy in the next five weeks."

Someone needs to tell Paul Gough that his comeback was against the saints. ;)

I think Chaffey misses being a veteran next year by only a couple of months. This is his 10th season but he doesn't turn 30 until next May. (bugger)
I'd like him to stay. His OP is a worry.

On another tangent, if Gas isn't around next year (which is looking more and more a possibility) then is Richo the only tiger who will qualify as a veteran? Andy Kellaway is old enough but I think this is only his 9th season.

EDIT: Chaffey needs to turn 30 prior to Sept 30 next year, which he does (if I've understood the AFLPA's CBA correctly).
I don't see why the club wouldn't keep him, especially if Richo is the only other veteran.

If Gas stays then he'll be on a significantly reduced new contract as well as a vet next year. So he would hardly cost us anything as far as the salary cap goes and it would free up $$$. IMO he is more valuable to us than Chaffey as a vet given the hole in our key defensive posts. We don't know how Thursty will go on his return from one of the worse knee injuries and there's no one else coming through who is an obvious successor :-\.

Either way Gas going or Gas staying on less dosh means we will have to spend remainder on player(s) to stay above the 92.5% minimum. Maybe this is where all this talk of us chasing a name player comes from.

I think Chaffey still has something to give to the club..................His resignation. :lol

Sorry Chaff, You're a good player when fit but somehow I think Injuries will continue to linger for the rest of your career.

This is the way u have to look at it.

The guy came into the side after a long absebce and played pretty well.

That in itself,as far as the club should be concerned, should ensure him the chance to again prove himself.

If he stars for the next 5 he may he may be an attractive trade.

Although not a superstar,he's good enuff for what we have atm.

Wait and see

Have to agree Ox.

I reckon this week is a good test for him - 2nd game back and he may get Johnson type because he has the body to compete.

The are other advantages in keeping him because he is eligble for the veterans next year - and when it's all said and done we can not get rid of every senior player on the list - we still have to be competitive and be attactive to sponsors and corporates

Let's just see how he goes - he obviously knows he's under the pump and knowing the bloke pretty well I've got know doubt he'll do the right thing by the club

I remember a young Chaffey in the mid 90s.
Quiet chap who wenr about his footy, like Brodders but different.

In many ways what makes a great club is a degree of loyalty and fairness
and this bloke has put  in as much as any of the seniors that remain on the list.

I dont want to follow a club that has none of tje above.

As far as Gaspar,Tivendale etc go, they've re-blown their chances this year through either injury or under-performance
and as such are open game for scrutiny.

Good luck Chaff. :thumbsup

If Gaspar stays, then Chaffey is gone. If Gaspar is gone, then there's a very good chance Chaffey will stay. Unlikely to see both stay, both can be listed as veterans for salary cap purposes, but only one can be counted outside the main list in effect giving us an extra draft pick.

Ox, Chaff's birthdate is 6th May 1977.

Joel and Chubba going on Fish's eligibility criteria will be available to become vets in 2008.

I think Chaffey still has something to give to the club..................His resignation. :lol

Sadly Chaff it's over. He tries hard and you couldn't knock his defensive efforts or courage today but we can longer afford to have guys especially senior players who miss what should be regulation targets which results in turnovers. He's not alone though.
